A very busy (and fun) day of Michigan Athletics

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Since so much went on, I feel I should just recap it in this thread. Would've done updates throughout the day but I was at the MBB win over Purdue and didn't get back until 8 but tabs on all of this.

M Basketball: OBVIOUSLY. WOW!!!!!

Baseball: After an easy 6-1 win over Saint Louis in the Jack Gifford Tournament out in Santa Clara, Michigan took on Creighton from the Big East. We led 6-3 in the 9th inning but Creighton tied it in the bottom of the 9th. The Wolverines took the win in the 10th inning when Jake Bivens scored on a wild pitch that was supposed to be an intentional walk to Drew Lugbauer. Both Lugbauer and Harrison Wenson led Michigan with 2 RBIs each.

Michigan is 4-2 and will take on host Santa Clara tomorrow in the final game of the tournament.

#14 Softball: Michigan took on their first of three ranked opponents this weekend in #18 Texas A&M. A&M is 15-0 and shut out #1 FSU on Thursday, so very underrated at #18. Despite out-hitting them, we just couldn't push a run across. Megan Betsa had 10 Ks but 6 walks. The second game of today was against Bethune-Cookman.

Tera Blanco finally got a HR, a 2-run shot to put us up 2-0. Her first of 2017. But BCU took a 3-2 lead when they hit a pitch by said-HR hitter Blanco for a HR of their own. Thankfully Michigan answered immediately and took the lead the next inning and never looked back. Aidan Falk had 5 RBIs in this one, Blanco and Amanda Vargas both had homers. Wolverines took this game 13-4.

Michigan is 8-4 after the 1-1 Saturday. We'll face #1 Florida State tomorrow at 6pm and #21 Arizona State at 7:30pm.

#11 M Swim & Dive: Unfortunately we just could not make up the ground lost in the last 3 days in diving and relays. A valiant effort, but our B1G Championship streak comes to an end at 6. Wolverines took individual B1G Championships in the following this weekend-

  • 500-yard Freestyle: Felix Auböck
  • 50-yard Freestyle: Paul Powers
  • 400-yard Individual Medley: Charlie Swanson
  • 1,650-yard Freestle: Felix Auböck

As a team, we finish as Co-Runner-Up with meet host Ohio State with 1382 points. Definitely positives here despite the streak ending. Everyone on the roster scored points in the second biggest meet of the season, and 69 NCAA A & B cuts were achieved. Here are the final standings.

Place Team Score
1. #4 Indiana 1504
2. #11 Michigan
#17 Ohio State
1382
1382
4. #20 Minnesota 879
5. #23 Wisconsin 763
6. Purdue 721.5
7. Penn State 554.5
8. Iowa 424
9. Northwestern 349
10. Michigan State 273

M Track: Michigan finished 7th of 12 (54 points) this season at the B1G Indoor Championships down at the SPIRE Institute. Drake Johnson of Michigan Football fame made the 60M Hurdles Championship final, but finished in 9th. We really miss NCAA Outdoor Champion Mason Ferlic and the points he brought these last few years in distance events. However, we did have an individual champion but it was not on the track.

Grant Cartwright won the B1G Championship in the Weight Throw, with a program record distance of 23.31 meters. Only our second-ever B1G Indoor Champion in the weight throw.

#18 W Track: After being only down 1 point out of first place after day 1, nothing seemed to go right today unfortunately. We just weren't scoring the key points needed to keep pace. Shockingly, our superstar distance runner Erin Finn did not win a championship this weekend. She had the lead sniped from her on Friday night by her own teammate Gina Sereno on the final turn and was passed on the bell lap today in the 5000M.

As mentioned, Michigan did have a B1G Champion on the Women's side. Gina Sereno slammed on the gas in the final 100M on Friday to go from 3rd to 1st and win the B1G 3,000 Meters Championship.

The Women finish in a tie for 7th place at 54 points. The great thing about track is this is only indoor season. We will have an opportunity to repeat as B1G Outdoor Champions later on this spring.

#12 M Gymnastics: The young Wolverines are on the rise, scoring a huge win over #10 Cal today at Cliff Keen Arena. Sophomore Emyre Cole took two event titles, on the Floor and in the air on the Vault.

Michigan took every event today, beating California by a final of 402.100-386.800. With a 4-4 record, the team will head down to their usual spring break trip spot: Puerto Rico to take on #3 Illinois and the Puerto Rican National Team in a tri-meet a week from today.

Down voting him is like beating your head against a wall to knock it down on principal.

Thank God Discgolf starts for me in earnest in about 45 days. Now thats the kind of count down I can get (whole heartedly) behind. One that ends at the beginning of the warm weather and not at the beginning of cold.

Spring Football has got to be my favorite time of the year. The only good thing about Fall is my other passion Michigan Football but to count down Summer to get there is a bit much for Mgo Disc Golfer my #1 addiction. The best Damn Disc Golf Tournaments, BBQ's, Pig Roasts (downriver connections) Skantilly clad ladies everywhere. Naked Quarry Swimming, Tree Swings, Boating, Putt in Bay. Camping, Camp fires out on the Island, Star gazing. Did I mention scantilly clad ladies everywhere? Just the tip of the Iceberg lettuce.

I honestly could go on forever as I am sure most of you already know how long winded most of  my posts are. But whats not to like about that short (what I love about warm weather) list?
