From the vaults: Hecklinski finds success at WIU

Not sure how many U-M fans know it, but WR coach/recruiting coordinator Jeff Hecklinski was once a can't miss QB prospect coming out of Palatine HS (IL) in '93.   Rated the top QB in the Midwest, Hecklinski committed to Illinois with the thought being he would immediately compete for playing time. Instead, after two years of languishing on the depth charts behind Johnny Johnson and Scott Weaver,  Hecklinski transferred to Western Illinois.

Let's hop in the wayback machine to October 30, 1997 and revisit Hecklinski, who was in the midst of leading the No. 2 ranked Division I-AA team in the country to an eventual confernce championship and NCAA playoff birth...

Once A Much-heralded Illini Recruit, Jeff Hecklinski Finds Success At Wiu.

Happiness More Than Big Burrito

October 30, 1997|By Gary Reinmuth, Tribune Staff Writer.

Mike Hecklinski, on the phone from Miami, has one question; one question he believes puts all his son has been through into perspective.

"Let me ask you this," he says. "Is Jeff Hecklinski going to be happier playing quarterback on an 0-7 Illinois team or a 7-1 Western Illinois team? You've got to be happy in life. That's the key."

Wisdom is a wonderful thing, says 23-year-old Jeff Hecklinski. Just look at all he has learned in the last four years:

- It's better to be loved by 5,000 fans in Macomb than it is to be judged by 50,000 in Champaign.

- Division I-A football is not the be-all and end-all of life some people make it out to be.

- With hard work, perseverance and faith--and a woman who loves you by your side--there is more than one way to chase your dream.

- It's better to be a big burrito than to eat one.

"I love the University of Illinois tremendously," he says. "I love the people. I love the atmosphere. And Champaign had a great night life--which I took advantage of many times.

"My wife (Tiffany, daughter of former Illini line coach Mike Deal) and I are both from big cities. We miss the city life there. I miss the malls. I miss LaBamba. It's a burrito joint where you can get burritos that are 12 inches long and last you two days."

But as he leads Western Illinois into Saturday's home game against Southern Illinois, he can't get over how lucky he was to stumble into just the right place.

For him, Western has been the definition of a real second chance.

He recently became only the second quarterback in school history to pass for more than 5,000 career yards. He has a chance to break Donny Simmons' school record for completion percentage (60.45 to Simmons' 60.907). And he's leading a team that is ranked No. 2 in the country in Division I-AA and headed to the playoffs.

But there's more to it than that. The running of tailback Aaron Stecker, the No. 2 rusher in I-AA with 1,295 yards, and the surprising play of the Leathernecks defense have finally taken the heat off Hecklinski--a feeling he never experienced at Illinois.

Four years ago he was the can't-miss QB who was sacked. Rated the top quarterback in the Midwest coming out of Palatine High School, Hecklinski arrived in the fall of 1993 ready to become the toast of Champaign. Two years later he was simply toast--and burned by the experience.

"Is it pretty depressing?" he asks a visitor who has seen the '97 Illini up close. "I've gotten to see them on TV a few times. They have more problems than just quarterback. I'll tell you: Everybody puts the blame on the quarterback. I wish them the best of luck, though. It's going to be tough."

BTB is maybe 4th on the depth chart of good burritos in AA. Pancheros, Qdoba, and Chipotle are all better (in no order)

You're kinda right.

I can't eat Pancheros sober but they get the nod because they're open til 4 AM.  BTB, I can mess with anytime of the day but Pancheros gets the nod over them.  Chipotle is the best in town but they close at like 10? They're kinda far too, but not too far.  Qdoba is way too far off campus.

Dude for real? I absolutely love BTB with Qdoba a close second. Chipotle is crap and I've never had Panchero's.

Denard has spent the offseason working really hard and smiling at people.

BTB is definitely way overrated by many people. As someone raised in California, I was really excited when it opened after hearing that the owners had come back from living in California (or were originally from California?) to open a burrito shop and bring good burritos to Ann Arbor. Man, was I disappointed. BTB wouldn't stand a chance in any of the towns in California I've lived in. BTB would almost certainly would be the worst burrito shop in all of late '90s Santa Cruz if they traveled back in time and relocated there (it's been awhile since I've been back to Santa Cruz so I can't speak to the burrito situation there now). Everytime my classmates raved about BTB I winced a little.

That said it's moderately better than Chipotle (at least it was in 2006 when I last ate there). Chipotle is decent, but it is still a mega-chain (run by McDonald's for eight years) and is thus correspondingly bland. Qdoba and Pancheros are about the same. I did used to enjoy Pancheros on occasion until I got into a screaming match with the manager that was entirely not my fault--haven't been back since.

A quick edit to say: I'm not bashing the food in Ann Arbor. I love Ann Arbor and if the right job came along I'd move back in a second. But mexican is not the town's strong suit. The middle-eastern and Indian food in A2 is better than anywhere else I've lived, for sure.
