Sideline reporter and 97.1 personality Doug Karsch said on air today that he's hearing Vance Bedford as the likely new DC. Karsch stayed pretty level-headed through the coaching search... Any other buzz out there on Bedford?
He'd be a good get. He coached Charles Woodson...nuff said. He's was at Florida as a DB coach, then went with Charlie Strong to Louisville as a DC. I think he'd make a good DC and DB coach. I was hoping for him or Teryl Austin.
Not really at you, but damn, I could have coached Charles Woodson. Wayne Fontes coached Barry Sanders, where would Barry have been without Wayno.
All BS aside I hope we get Bedford.
Schwartz has them going in a good direction tho, le't hope that WC Ford doesn't fuck it up.
should buy the pictures Matt Millen had that allowed him to stay employed so long.
Wayne Fontes unleashed Barry Sanders.
You would have to give most of the credit to Charles!
Great coach and he can recruit
but how does anyone know Vance Bedford is a good coach and more importantly, a good DC? It is all wishful thinking since we can only look at one year of being a DC to judge.
It's likely that even with the elevated monetary packages that M will offer it's coaches, we wouldn't offer enough to get him. That has been the word on the street.
If Randy Shannon is sitting out there on January 14, that's likely a sign that he doesn't plan to coach next season.
Assumed it would be him or Austin.
I also would like Teryl Austin. Vance Beford would be a good get as well, but Im hoping for Austin. Either one of those guys would be a good hire, imo. Randy Shannon would be my ultimate choice, but doubt thatd happen.
With ties to florida hopefully he could fill that recruiting void. Of course Shannon is a better candidate for that (as well as DC)
I WANT A D COORDINATOR NOW! I wish they would make announcement soon so whoever it is can start helping with recruiting!
He basically turned down Florida last year due to his loyalty to Strong at Louisville. Good Midwest and probably Florida recruiting roots.
And with a defensive-minded HC, you want a DC on the same page with the HC. While some may clamor for Shannon, I think that Hoke and Shannon would almost be TOO much personality on D.
Vance would be my choice right now.
So how much does his loyalty to Strong at Louisville hurt our chances?
If this is true I might have to get out my o face.
I have heard this also. I believe it will be either
1.) Teryl Austin
2.) Vance Bedford
The names are not in any specific order?! Will wehear announcement today? Meeting of coaches is set for saturday!
I hope its soon. Dallas Crawford is wondering as much as we are.
Full Name: Vance JUANO Bedford
Teryl Austin would be good. He was thought to be the favorite for the Texas DC job; not sure what happened with that.
Bedford would be good also; having a Florida offer makes him at least a high 3-star.
Mattison is old. I don't know if I'm really into him. He has as good of a job as you can have as a defensive coach though. DC of the Ravens is impressive - clearly his connection to Jack Harbaugh helped him get that. Don't know how he'd recruit.
From that list, I'll take whoever we can get. They all possess good qualifications and would be a good fit on this staff.
I'm excited to see who we get.
Can you say: "Charles Woodson's former position coach" ??? I like it.
Plus, Shannon no doubt sees himself as an HC. Even if we were to nab him -- unlikely -- he wouldn't stay for long.
Would be a good hire. Lots of experience as a DB coach and a DC, and Louisville was top 20 in both yards and points against this year.
He's an integral part of Strong's staff, and Bedford isn't a Michigan alum, just a former coach. Moving would only make sense if it means a lot more money. Maybe it's all about Hokamania...
a) pay raise
b) pay raise
c) coached with Hoke before and comfortable there. plus gets alot of credit if he turns us into a top 50 defense.
d) pay raise
I know we haven't neem great the last few (3) years bout how about
e) Michigan trumps louisville
He was getting $300k last year. I'm guessing we could top that. I wouldn't call it a lateral move either. It would be better national exposure if he has any hopes of becoming a HC at some point.
I don't think DC from Louisville to Michigan is a lateral move. DC at Louisville to position coach at Michigan is lateral.
If they bring in this guy and someone like Corwin Brown for DB's I would like it. Corwin was the guy recruiting all the big time talent to ND under Wiess and is coaching for the Patriots right now - So he must know a thing or two about coaching as well.
#31 in FEI this past year, 7th in the nation in sacks, and by all accounts a great teacher of technique. YES PLZ.
Not really a big name, well established DC like I was hoping for. But like I've been saying, if these guys can get the job done I'll be happy.
Bedford is a big name when it comes to his track record at UM and UF.
Especially given our time frame. Let's get him up here and start helping out with these defensive recruits...
his defense at Louisville (#14 in TD) as being proof that he's great, but three other Big East teams were better with South Florida not far behind:
5 out of 8 Big East teams in the top 20 in total defense speaks of a weak conference with bad offenses, with Louisville's defense being about average for the bunch. I don't think Bedford is as good as he appears on paper.
Manny Diaz had one good year as DC at Middle Tenn, then one as Miss St. Now he's at Texas. It can turn out well. Let's hope it does. And hell, at least it's not GERG.
2004 (pre-Bedford): 74th in TD
2005: 95th in TD
2006: 89th in TD
2007 (post-Bedford): 101st in TD
So he walked into a bad situation and basically made it worse. I remain skeptical that he is all he's cracked up to be.
wanted him at DC. Sold.
He had a pretty damn good track record before his 1 year at DC. I think this is a move a lot like BH's appointment as HC. He's sort of up and coming wrt leadership as DC but shows a lot of potential and has the Michigan experience thing down...
I am very excite...
funny to see people around here say something reminds them of hoke's hire and mean it in a positive way. go blue!
Agreed. Uconn made our secondary look functional this year. Espn has Cincy at #40 Pass Offense, WVU #62, Pitt #70, Lville #78, and on down. I dare say our Pass D could have been top 100. Florida offer is impressive, and considering our situation, I would happy w/ the hire.
Moe approves this message.
Pimp Hand. I'm not really sure what it means but that DB is a bad mutha
Ehhh...DB still sucks balls.
There's a somewhat decent sized contigent around here that seems to think if you don't blindly agree with every possible decision the school makes that you're a traitor and will get negged. Don't let it get to you.
will neg you for being a dick.
You're getting negged for the tone, not the content. Bedside manners count.
That will get u jacked up
As Don and Sam Webb said earlier, he's Charlie Strong's pimp hand in Louisville and not inclined to be going anywhere.
But if we do get him, it's a good sign that the AD is backing this coach in getting the best coordinators by paying more than we have in the past.
I have a dream today, that we judge coaches not on their skin color but on the content of their Carracter.
I can promise ya, Brady Hoke coaches for 10 years, winning the Big Ten multiblee times and turning the program over to his Michigan Man protegees, Scott Loefler and Vance Bedford.
1. Charles Woodson DB coach.
2. DB coach at Florida under Strong.
3. Strong believed in him so much he took him to UL.
4. Hoke/Bedford combo of ex UM DL and DB coaches during NC defense = More please.
He was also the DB coach during THE HORROR
He's good and all but I don't see this as the lights out DC we could get.
FWIW, Louisville went from 82nd in 2009 in Defensive FEI to 41st in 2010. Bedford's days at OkSU predate the FEI.
So, not quite as impressive as the un-normalized total defense numbers, but still something in the right direction. No idea how the roster makeup changed from 2009 to 2010.
Didn't Louisville run a 3-3-5 this year too? It would make sense if he came since SDSU and UM did.
I just want to know 1) is he a "Michigan Man" and 2) can he make more "Michigan Men"
That's all that matters here.
My vision of the 3-3-5 is:
I thought you were suggesting that we should run a 3-4 in a clever way; then I thought you couldn't count (11 =/= 12), and was going to make a Tennessee joke. Now I think that you're talking about star rankings for recruits, and that I wasted more time than I should have figuring this out.
What do you mean by this? Bringing multiple staff members with him?
Karsch didn't cite any sources, it was just how he said it...take it with a grain of salt.
I hope he's right too
That seems like a strange prediction since it was pretty well known that Al was coming with Brady as soon as he took the Michigan job.
I think he predicted Hoke and Loeffler before the HC announcement.
You already said that.
In the core of almost every sports "journalist" beats the heart of a rabid jock-sniffer who wants nothing so much as to give a reach-around to his favorite athletic heroes. Since the local media largely avoided doing so over the last three years, there's a lot of pent-up affection that has to be released.
He doesn't relish the prospect of having to review film for two hours with David Brandon on Sundays, explaining why he didn't blitz on 3rd and seven in the second quarter and why William Campbell still isn't low enough.
I'd take Bedford.
A poor track record as a DC, with a one-year exception in a weak conference. Making it to the middle of the Big East in defense is not a major feat; Greg Robinson might well have done the same thing in the 2010 Big East. He also was the DC under Charlie Strong, who is arguably the most proven DC-turned head coach. Why exactly are people happy about this?
All of Casteel's DC experience is in that same weak conference, and he was being floated around here by a lot of folks as the only thing necessary to get UM back to contention for the Big Ten.
Lorne approves, if true.
Lorne approves, if true.
Don't see why they might not consider this guy. He is currently the linebackers coach at Penn St. Was head coach at Maryland from 97-2000. Grad assistant at Michigan and Bowling Green. Coached at Ball St in 82. Was defensive assistant from 83-91 at Colorado under Bill McCartney (won a NC in 1990). 92-96 DC at Northwestern.
The problem may be that he's waiting for JoePa to call it quits and may be in line for a promotion at PSU.
