van bergen = massey ?

a little too big to play on the edge, too small to play inside, but a good player. i think if we had more depth, we would see RVB on the edge.

Yep, lack of depth is forcing us to play alot of guys out of position. Too many walkons and young players. It'll be another 2-3 years before we'll have enough pieces for the D to be good.

I hope that does not turn out to be a fair comparison. Massey had to play inside in many tight games where interior running is likely to last into the fourth quarter. Hopefully with our explosive offense VB will be able to concentrate more on pushing upfield and less occupying space. Massey still wasnt effective at the end of his career while VB still has almost 3 seasons to make the grade. With a DE position opening next year, the shift to the edge is certainly a possibility. Time will tell.

Ryan Van Bergen leads the team in sacks a third of the way through the season (with a whopping 1.5). Scoreboard, RVB. But seriously, he is already much better than Massey and as noted by so many others he is still young and playing in a difficult spot after being moved inside. And yes, that stat is terrifying.

RVB has an excellent build for a 3-4 or 4-3 under defensive end. I think, with depth, he will move to that spot and excel. Maybe as soon as next year with Brandon Graham gone?
