Valenti guarantees MSU bball win

Submitted by umichjenks on

I was flipping through the radio stations and heard the MSU slappy Mike Valenti on 97.1 guarantee an MSU win on Saturday 58-56.

Not really surprising, but I can't wait to hear his excuses on Monday as to why Michigan won.

Tired of Valenti baiting the over-emotional sports fan. Either way, whether we win or lose it he's certainly not accountable for it. Guarantee? Guarantee what? What is really on the line if he loses. Nothing. Not trying to rain on anyones parade here but this is the oldest trick in the book for Sports Radio. Fire all your angst to your Congressman, not Valenti.

Exactly.  He's risking nothing by saying this.  All he is doing is getting his fan base up for the game, which is a good thing for him.  If they lose, then no one will care what he said because they'll be too pissed they lost.  His words mean nothing (as usual).

That being said, I kind of feel like my hopes have been smashed so often the past few years in nearly every sport I like (most are UM) when the most is on the line.  I am fully preparing myself to have my balls stepped on once again.

If MSU wins, he comes on the radio and preaches about how right he was.  If he loses, he makes excuses or maybe takes another "vacation day" or just sweeps it under the rug.  It's his show, he won't bring up him looking like an idiot if all possible.  All it serves is for people to get pissed off or excited (depending on fanbase) and call in today so they can argue/agree with him.  Classic sports radio, no substance, just making guaranteed predictions and not even acknowledging any other possibility.

Plus, how does a guarantee from him mean anything.  MSU players and coaches aren't getting fired up from him.  UM players aren't. The only people that care are the fans that for some reason still listen to him.  And no offence to those people, but they are going to matter very little in terms of the outcome of the game.

Dear Mr. Valenti,

In between bites of pudding, I suggest you look back fondly on 2010 and try capture and preserve that feeling for always; for that was the year Michigan State reached the apogee of Sparty athletic accomplishments. After a short absence the Michigan you fear and hate  is back, in both football and basketball. The natural order is asserting itself and Michigan is returning to its rightful place.

Signed,

Guarantees by people actually involved in sporting events are dumb. Guarantees by people that have no direct influence on the outcome of an event are desperate pleas for attention.

If there's one thing I really don't care about, it's Mike Valenti's opinion on the game tomorrow.

Who is he to "guarantee" a win? He's a talking head. It's even a hell of a stretch when a team member or a coach does it in my opinion.

It's general knowledge he's an asshat, but come on. It's one thing for someone in his position to believe someone will win, but this is another beast entirely.

Valenti has already won.  You listened to his show.  You were angered / irritated enough by his guarantee to post it on a blog.  The best way to kill a pest is to ignore him.  Starve his ratings and you'll be rid of him soon enough.

Turn the dial.

Agreed.  I don't listen to the other Detroit area shows because it's all the same UM stuff.  I moved away and sometimes listen to the show online but I would never listen to the other shows.  I don't get why UM fans are so concerned about Valenti.  Just listening to some of these callers is hilarious.  It's like every chicken little has called in to justify their opinion.  I'm not surprised someone made a thread, probably one of those chicken little callers.

Sam Webb gauranteed a Michigan victory.  Izzo guaranteed a MSU victory.  Valenti gauranteed a MSU victory.  Not one of them will draw a charge or make a free throw, and they each mean exactly nothing.

Spartan fans trying to frame this game as an all-or-nothing contest are just trying to find something to take solace in what is a smoking crater of a season for them.

Michigan winning on Saturday and making the tournament would be sweet, but it's just icing on the cake of a season that has exceeded all our expectations.  If we lose and have to settle for an NIT bid, sure it will be disappointing, but I'm still going to pleased that our team has progressed further than expected.

Even if Sparty wins and sneaks into the tourney as a 10 or 11 seed, they're out after a game or two and still will have "disappointing" attached to their season....but they put us in our place again..hur, hur, derp...

Regardless of the outcome, we're still Michigan, and they're not.

Some MSU fans I talk to, not all, are of the opinion that MSU winning would flatten out Michigan's emergence. The reasoning is that Michigan is the team with all the mojo, playing at home, expecting a win,  in a red herring type year for MSU.

I think they are reading way too much into it. You do a great job of pointing out the big picture perspective surrounding where this program is headed.

I guess we can understand such overdrama from some members of a fan base that equates  3 straight wins in a sea of decades of defeat as evidence that they've destroyed Michigan football.

One typo, oops.  Aside from that, who the hell are you to decide what is good and bad?  If I'm going to trust anybody to tell me what's bad for me, it won't be somebody who has been so oblivious to the college football scene over the last 4 years that they think VaTech losing to Boise St. is twice as bad as UofM losing to App St.

You called out people for typos in other threads.  Getting called out by the grammar police doesn't feel too good, does it?

Well, that's just, like, my opinion, man.  You're welcome to review my arguments and present counter-evidence but this thread is not the place to resume this debate.

All I was doing is saying it was a typo, and that I'm aware of the conventions of grammar.  My original comment was meant to be humor, in the form of Mr. Mackey from South Park, in case you aren't familiar with the show.  I'm done talking to you.

It's good to know what an overrated, loud-mouthed alum of MSU on a crappy radio program thinks about the game.  The only promises I care about are from people who actually have some control over the game, not some putz who'll be at home watching live everyone else.

Captain Obvious

Why?

A thousand times - why?

Why do people listen to idiots on talk radio that they disagree with?  Why do you willingly put dollars in their pockets and subsidize their crappy hit pieces so they can continue to pollute the airwaves?  You realize that's the model, right?  Screaming inflammatory, one-sided bullshit = the true believers tune in and nod along with the rants and the other side tunes in to conjure up some outrage so they can call in, get berated and hung up on, the true believers cackle with knowing glee and the circle of life continues.

You are the liberal that tunes in to Rush and then goes running off to complain to DailyKos about conservative bias.  You are the conservative that watches Rachel Maddow and then calls in to Rush to cry with outrage over the liberal media.  Later, Rush and Rachel probably share a beer and laugh at the sheer absurdity of the situation.

I will never understand this.

58-56 is hardly a sure fire guarantee..  I don't recall those words being spoken.  I know its hard being little brother, even if just temporary, but come on guys your envy is showing.

I can't wait to hear his excuses on Monday as to why Michigan won.

Well...we didn't get to hear his excuses for the win at MSU because he didn't show up for work that day.  I expect a no-show on Monday as well.

umichjenks

Haha, there were actually a ton of Michigan callers that ripped on him for that yesterday.  They were telling him it's ok if he's not there on Monday b/c they'll understand since he did it last time.

I hope Hardaway Jr. posterizes every single player on that team.
