UW-IU before Chappell out

Submitted by Rasmus on

The score was 17-10 Wisconsin, with Indiana having missed a field goal on Chappell's last drive. The stats:

Indiana: 7 first downs, 95 yards rushing, 62 yards passing (8 of 14, one TD)

Wisconsin: 7 first downs, 93 yards rushing, 46 yards passing (4 of 7)

Even if you count the Wisconsin drive (2 plays, 66 yards) after Chappell got hurt, before his replacement fumbled the first snap, it's still not a total blowout, 24-10 with Indiana moving the ball effectively (that is, 24-17 at the half would have been possible).

In short, Wisconsin is good, but the fact they blew out Indiana and we did not (42-35) probably doesn't mean as much as might seem. If Chappell is in for the whole game, it's much closer, with Wisconsin winning by at most 20.

They looked really bad against some rather weak teams early on, then really strong in some later ones.  It will be a big question as to which team takes the field Saturday.

Not to beat said deceased equine,  but the offense needs to stop giving the football away.  If they don't put the football on the ground (my favorite football phrase), Michigan can absolutely outscore Wiscy's offense.  Turnover margin can be AT WORST even to win this game

I had Indiana +21.5 in a pick 'em contest with my buddy and he made fun of me pretty bad for the final score.  I was trying to tell him I might have covered if Chappell didn't get hurt.

Turnover margins,  penalties, and defensive stops.  If they can improve on these aspects they can beat anyone, but unfortunately if they don't they can lose to anyone.  An early toast to beating Wisconsin and being 8-3!

Wiscy at home this year has outscored the competition 272(!)-97 (that includes the 83-20 IU score and a 70-3 win over Austin Peay)

Wiscy on the road this year has outscored the competition 130-98

So it is pretty clear that Wiscy is a different team on the road than at home, and the 83 points they dropped on IU last week might be a byproduct of being a very good home team and Bret Bielema being a massive tool and throwing deep late in the game.  If UM doesn't turn the ball over and the defense plays with the fire it has shown the past few weeks, an upset is definitely possible.

The Maize and Blue have a huge opportunity this week.  Wiscy isn't all that good (way overrated in my opinion) and I think RR's boys are coming into their own.  Our youth is growing up.

With a win this Saturday RR will have a winning record as Michigan head coach against 3 B10 teams: Minnesota (1 gm played), Indiana, and Wisconsin.  Combined record for Minny in 2008 and Indiana 2008 - 2010: 18-29.  Wisconsin over those years: 26-10.
