It's what they deserve.  ESPN Classic played the 1990 game (28-24 loss in the 4th quarter, ref measuring with an index card, ricocheted pass and catch going 60 yards for ND) non stop for a decade.

We paid our dues.  Now let ND be subjected to UTL until 2022.

In our second to last drive, we threw the ball to Vincent Smith on first down and he scored. In that situation, wouldn't the "normal" call be to run and milk the clock, setting up either the game winning touchdown or game tieing field goal with no time left?

At that point in the season, Gibbons was much more of an unknown quantity, so I don't think we wanted to take chances on last-minute field goals if we could avoid it.  A screen can be a fantastic call against a blitzing defense, which is exactly how it worked out.

I think ND really expected the run in that situation which is why they overpursued Denard and also why that throwback screen worked so well. It was a great call by Borges, but one that maybe makes more sense on second down. I guess if Smith drops the pass then there is still plenty of time and the odds are that he catches it, gets a nice gain and gets tackled in bounds thus accomplishing the same thing.

Obligatory Don Criqui perspective (embedding per gopoohgo, as I didn't see anyone do this earlier in the thread). Anytime he goes from building up drama to being genuinely upset, it's beautiful, as was that last series for the rest of us - so glad I was there:

Such an incredible night. I had never been on such an emotional roller coaster in my life from depression to cloud 9 in one quarter of football. So glad to have been in the Big House that night. Go Blue! Ready for September 1st!

Could have had tickets for this game when the 4 game ticket packs went on sale, however my brother in-law set his wedding for this day and we live in Ohio (another story for another day).  I thought no problem as the wedding was set for 3:00 PM.  Ceremony around 20 minutes, say my congrats and up 75 I will roll, HOWEVA, my brother in-law asked me to be a groomsmen...I couldn't tell him no.  So no ND game tix, instead I went with the TSIO ticket pack and that turned out fairly well.  So fast foward to the day of the game and low and behold my brother in-law set up a HDTV connection for me and I was able to watch the game, unfortunately surrounded by Ohio fans, save one ND fan.  As the first half started I was already slightly buzzed and that quickly turned into very buzzed watching the poor play.  But as the 2nd half rolled around and the momentum started to build I remember a bad intereference call on us and I started yelling BS over and over to which my wife yelled back "you're sleeping on the couch tonight."  About half way through the 4th quarter my brothers in-law (all three) came over to finish watching the game with me and then the first go ahead TD by Vincent Smith happened and I went nuts but quickly calmed down realizing there was just entirely too much time left.  As ND scored I was absolutely deflated and remeber saying that if we can score I'll slam the rest of the Miller Lite.  The rest, as we are all well aware, is sweet history and lucky for me there were only a couple of Miller Lite's left.  It was absolutely sweet to watch that win amongst all the Ohio fans.  For the one ND fan, he left a at the first go ahead score saying we suck.  I said nothing in return and left it at that.

GO BLUE!
