USMNT vs. Portugal (In-Game) Thread

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

We had an in-game thread last week and we won.

Thought someone was going to start it, so I'll go ahead and give it a shot and hopefully we can turn our fortunes around.

I can understand that. I concede that I am very cynical but (whether it be Hoke as our coach or our world cup chances) I am above all, a realist. There's no point in ignoring facts and relying on some sort of unfounded optimism

Just telling you what's gonna happen. It's the same as people on this board who project 8+ wins for this upcoming football season. Sure you hope it happens, but if you step back and look at it objectively, you know that it's just not gonna happen no matter how much you hope for it. I'm not trying to impact your thought processes or optimism, I'm just telling the truth and not sugar coating it. Do I hope the US ties Germany and advances? absolutely! Do I hope that Hoke gets the team ready and is able to beat MSU OR Ohio? Unequivacly! But the fact of the matter is that it's just not gonna happen, so why get your hopes up? Deep down everyone knows this but this board is over-run but sunshine blowers who want to see what they hope will happen and not what's gonna happen.

It take's a special type of blog for everyone to follow the party line and be afraid of the truth....hence my neg bombs. I never intended to have such a negative rating, but it seems that if you don't believe that everything is sunshine and roses in regards to the USMNT and especially the football program you're negged. I absolutely wish I had more cause for optimism, but taking a step back and looking at things OBJECTIVELY, I'm not sure how anyone can predict anything different from what I have

The self-importance and arrogance of this comment basically makes me think I should just remove you from the blog because there is no evidence that you would be able to handle or are indeed interested in constructive disagreement or interesting in actually responding to the opinions of others with any coherent, rational demeanor.

in regards to soccer I can't really respond intelligently as I'm not just not knowledgeable outside of what the talking heads say, which is not positive with regards to our chances against Germany. Football however is a whole nother matter, and this is primarily a football blog after all

There are plenty of posters that are not "sunshine and roses" posters that don't amass 5 downvotes per post. It's the definitive manner in which you post that gets you the downvotes, not the fact you're being negative. As if you are the authority on what can and can't happen. Maybe provide some real insight why US can't tie Germany or why we can't win 8 games in football next season and you won't get negbombed.

I don't claim to be the absolute authority on what will and won't happen (nor can anyone here, see the first app state game projections if you want evidence). I can't give any insight into why we won't beat Germany other than what the talking heads say. If you want to insight into why we will win 8 games  at most next season, that I can do albeit most have already been covered in this blog.

that this is a site designed for many people to share their thoughts and opinions right? As an alumnus I believe I have the right to share my opinion regardless of how negative it may be. If that's a ban-able offense, then I'm sorry and I will quickly switch my projection to us winning the World Cup and the football team winning the NC for the next 10 years.

I'll do the same.

I still don't think you're legit but I'm not going to ignore the olive branch on my hunch.

I have friends that have similar over the top reactions to a loss.

but I received my acceptance the day Bo died, and my very first game was "the horror" so I may be conditioned to be extremely pessimistic and negative especially in regards to our football program. But I am a very proud alumnus and love the University of Michigan to death. I wouldn't be starting medical school if it wasn't for my time there, and for that I am extremely grateful.

Just to be clear, it isn't the sharing of opinions or the diversity of the opinions that troubles anyone, but more that you admit to your opinion being underinformed if not completely uninformed and yet persist in trying to troll the blog with these opinions in a rather snide manner. I can guarantee you that such behavior, if you continue it is A) not going to be accepted and B) will likely get you removed from the blog. Consider yourself warned.

If you don't have insight into a certain topic, then why say a team can or can't do ______. And stop adhering desperately to your uninformed opinion when confronted about it.

And saying we won't win 8 games is kind of silly. That's where the over/under will be set. So it's not like this is a team that went 3-9 and 8 games would be a huge reach. 8 games is definitely doable, while still being a disappointment. So don't complain when you're getting negged for "going against the grain" when you're really just being contrarian to be an asshole.

being objective= being a troll. I'm glad I understand that the majority of this blog can't handle an honest opinion. Good to know that if I project a NC for the football team next year I would be +1000, but God forbid I have some sort of common sense

Of course, before this tournament people would have doubted the US would beat Ghana and nearly beat Portugal, settling for a cheap tie.  Germany is very good, but they struggled at times against Ghana and the US certainly isn't lacking in confidence.

Um, I don't think that's quite how it works.  US has to play well against Germany, but right now I'm not seeing the doom and gloom beyond letting a winnable game go to a draw.

...for a result to happen when both teams are happy with it. Naturally, not through collusion, because as long as either team needs a goal they'll go forward, but once both teams are happy they'll take no chances. The fullbacks stay back, the holding midfielders hold, all the attacks are 3 on 7.

LIterally the last kick of the game.  I'm in shock.

Feel exactly like I felt after half-court shot by OSU or Kordell-to-Westbrook or something along those lines (Wisconsin heave to tie vs. MBB, etc.).

Portugal needs to beat Ghana and/or we need to tie.

There are still 4-5 scenarios, but for us to move forward, those are the two most likely?
