Brandon said he had to pay Hoke big bucks to keep him from USC so USC finally has free run at Hoke!!!

Ok on a serious note - Chip Kelly to USC.

I thought this would happen after it was found out that he coached the ASU game drunk.  Dude's got a problem and needs to get his life in order before he thinks about coaching again.

The bad news is that he coached the ASU game while he was drunk.  The worse news is that he coached the Washington game sober.  I'll be here all week.

USC, University of Support and Counseling.  Program Steps:  Step 1- Ignore Warning Signs...Step 2- Get addict to finally admit they have a problem...Step 3- Give Addict Leave of Absence to handle addiction.. Step 4- Fire Addict....   I am sure this will help him not want a drink tonight.

...I believe they are to some extent.  I think a recovering alcoholic who hasn't had a drink in 20 years and whose alcoholism has not affected his performance would have an ADA claim if his employer fired him for being an alcoholic (in contrast with drinking on the job).

This post is purely for entertainment purposes, though, and should not be taken as reflecting the law or common sense or the nature of space and time.

California is an at-will employment state. So, unless there is something in his contract preventing it, his employer may fire him at any time for any or no reason and would be foolish to give a specific reason for doing so. Now, the contract terms may warrant performance issues being cited, and USC certainly has a case for that. But I would bet they negotiate a buyout and he quietly goes away to put his life back together.

...could argue in the right circumstances that he was illegally fired for being an alcoholic even if he wasn't told this directly, but that's just a guess and far afield from this situation.  And I agree with you that the parties will likely resolve this as quietly as possible.  The flurry of reports in the last day make me think Sark would want no part of a public rehashing of his various missteps.

...said a couple of years ago:

The ADA specifically provides that employers may require an employee who is an alcoholic or who engages in the illegal use of drugs to meet the same standards of performance and behavior as other employees.84 This means that poor job performance or unsatisfactory behavior – such as absenteeism, tardiness, insubordination, or on-the-job accidents – related to an employee’s alcoholism or illegal use of drugs need not be tolerated if similar performance or conduct would not be acceptable for other employees.

Alcoholic or not, you can't show up to work drunk. It's a performance issue at that point. They have plenty of reason to fire for cause.

Scuttlebutt is more embarrassing stories/details are going to come out soon and USC is just getting ahead of the story. Regardless, for all parties involved, this seems like the best move. Hopefully he gets the help he needs to get his life back on track.

There are reports a few incidents involving alcohol at functions, during camp and while traveling with the team.  This guy obviously has an issue and it's not one to joke about.  Hoping he gets his life in order and gets the help he needs.

The LA Times was out there with documents and interviews with former Washington players saying that this was a problem when he was there as well, which made the whole situation even more troubling as here he is now having lost a job over this. Hopefully, he can pull it together, get the help he needs and get back into coaching on some level.
