USC RB Carlisle Transferring To ND

Submitted by jlcoleman71 on

USC RB Amir Carlisle will transfer to Notre Dame from USC and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2013 season. Rivals had him listed as a 4 star coming out of high school.

He was born in Evanston, so transferring to be closer to home.

He's referring to the player, not the team.  He's 100% accurate in his comment on how the other, previous comment defines "sour grapes".  It refers to the Aesop fable with the fox who couldn't reach the grapes he wanted, then told himself that they were "probably sour anyway".  There is no better modern example of this mentality than NCAA football recruiting!

If I was advising my kid on where to play I would tell him to keep up with the message boards. None of the coaches' bad behavior escapes the all-seeing eye of the internets, even though they can apparently keep it a total secret from recruits.

I just don't understand why anyone would go play at ND. Kelly is obviously psychotic and the program has been mediocre at best for quite a while.

5 star Nelson Agholor:

Passion has played a role in attracting Agholor to Notre Dame — head coach Brian Kelly's passion.

"Everybody (on TV) sees all the reactions he has," Agholor said. "That's all because of his passion to win and his passion to be successful.

"The first time I really noticed him was when everybody made a big deal about him yelling at the players. I was fired up. That cranked me up. The aggression and concentration he coaches with, that's where that comes from."

While some might think Kelly's fire might scare recruits away, instead, it drew Agholor toward him.

"You know he's in the game," Agholor said of Kelly.

To some the name Notre Dame still means something; to others it still means alot!  Also, I personally don't buy into the meme that Brian Kelly is crazy and psychotic.  Though I do giggle at and enjoy the meme, pics, etc many have brought to us here.  But again, I don't buy Kelly being all that we've made him out to be.  I think the guy is a pretty good coach, and it's obvious many recruits think so too.  (Note: I also cannot fathom how a practice filmer was allowed 30 ft. up in a wind storm, that was bad, whether it was Kelly's "responsibility or not".)

Secondly, even if ND is down, what's wrong with the mindset of being part of the group that helped bring them back to glory.  Michigan fans have that respect right now, for the Seniors on team 132.  Michigan has been much more relevant the last decade/15 years, than ND, but we should be able to see from what Michigan has endure for a few years that some kids don't need to go to Alabama, Ohio State, or USC (though this one initially did!) to have success at the collegiate level.  Some kids do want to be "the one's that brought winning back" to fill-in-the-blank University.

Montana graduated. They had some good years under Lou and then it was down the hill. Bob Davies, Ty, Big Tuna....one disaster after another. Maybe Kelly will turn it around but thus far I am not impressed. Next year will be even worse for the Irish then this year. Michigan will be back in no time because not only do they have good blue chips (like ND) but they have a hell of a coaching staff. I just hope that Mattison sticks around for about 10 years =). With his recruits, he will have the Michigan defense at a championship caliber level in no time. Sure, Kelly did well at Cinci but his tenure at ND thus far has not been the debut the domers were hoping for.

That's my issue with him. It's not the yelling per se. It doesn't prevent him from being a good coach (see Bobbie Knight and Woody Hayes) but it also may not end well for him (see Bobbie Knight and Woody Hayes). Bo certainly yelled a lot but never seemed to be on the brink of losing it like Kelly seems to be.

That's a really good pick-up for ND.  The only concern would be why he left USC.  Does he have attitude issues or just realized what Kiffin is truly like.

Agholor being drawn to it I get from a younger player.  What it really says is Kelly knows how to recruit.  Other recruiters say do you want to play for a raging madman and Kelly says do you want to play for a coach that wants to win and is as competitive as you are or a coach that looks ho hum.

Reality, I want a coach that shows some fire but is still under control.  For my taste I would like Brady with more fire at times as well but never like Kelly.  Kelly is out of control rather then being a fierce competitor and there is a difference.

Why would you want Hoke to have more fire? Were you here the past 4 months? His temperament obviously works.  Do you think Kelly could have calmed Gibbons down enough to have the turnaround he did and kick the insurance field goal in the final minutes of The Game as well as the winner in the Sugar Bowl? Doubt it.  Our team was clearly much more mentally sound than the Irish this year, given that our turnover rate was down dramatically from the past few years and the Irish looked like they were throwing around a hot coal the whole season.  Also, our guys didn't seem to have any trouble getting fired up for our games. Look at all the times we started poorly and the coaches settled them down.  Some guys do respond better to being yelled at, but the number who respond poorly is higher I think.

Note-I didn't downvote you

Not to mention the way Hoke gave Hagerup a pat on the back after that nearly disastrous (and now hilarious) gaffe in The Game.  I think that moment epitomizes why Hoke is a GREAT coach and a GREAT recruiter: He gives his players (nearly) unconditional support.  I think Kelly would have had a stroke right there on the sideline.

I think Hoke's comment after the sugar bowl that the players are taught to support and compliment each other, especially following a mistake separates him significantly. If you recruit and develop and support competitive people, they already know when they made a mistake. Picking them back up and getting them back in the game is impressive. That does not mean he is not ultra-competitive. He also stated very shortly thereafter that they failed to reach the goal of winning a Big Ten championship. Not often a coach would point out shortcomings after a BCS Bowl win.

I also love that he says Big ten Championship is the goal not rose bowls and not National Championsips. I like that because the BCS is terrible and I blame Nebraska fans for this mess we're in

If you think about it, you do want Notre Dame to be a good team.  We play ND every year and it gives us that quality win when they have a good year.  From the sounds of it, David Brandon won't be leaving the Big House for the nonconference games, so we need every quality nonconference win we can get.

Aren't we gonna have to leave the Big House for some non-conf. games with the Pac-10 challenge deal coming in?  They're not possibly going to let us play a Pac-10 team every year at home.  I'd assume we'd stagger things so that each year in the pre-conference slate we would either play a game at Notre Dame or at a random Pac-10 team.  (I hear Pullman, Wash is nice that time of year)
