USAToday running story about Buckeye Coach berating Kicker

Submitted by wisecrakker on

for wanting to take a water break during stretches.

"What do you need water for, Sunshine?" Coombs yelled. "We're stretching! And you're a kicker!"

Calling into question a player's toughness? Check. Demoralizing player during mundane task? Got 'em. Using a player's position in a derogatory fashion? Affirmative.

Coombs went for the football coach insult cycle by delivering a final death blow.

"Are you tired from stretching?" Coombs asked incredulously.

Here's video too

Editorial:  Obviously the reasoning behind this thread was lost to some of you.  I posted this to show how sensationalized the news has become. This is why the thread stated with "USAToday running story..."  I guess I had imagined a discussion of how the news over blows trivial incidents and everything at this level is recorded by any jackwagon with a Smartphone.  IMO the coach wasnt wrong to use the players position to motivate him, instead he needs to be aware not to do it when the whole world is watching and video taping it. Carry on. GoBlue.

I detest Ohio and don't ever want to "defend" them, but it is rapidly becoming politically incorrect for coaches to actually coach.  I have a feeling Bo was really lucky to be coaching when he did, and not in this era.

I deem this to be okay so long as OSU doesn't make them run laps for loafing around or make them do any really hard drills as part of their conditioning process.

I really don't see much of a problem with this, berating might be a little harsh of a word in this instance.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO START A THREAD FOR, SUNSHINE!

YOU ARE THE EQUIVALENT OF A KICKER ON THE BOARDS!

ARE YOU TIRED FROM TYPING LAME THREADS!?!?!

SACK UP, BUTTERCUP!

Seriously, the dude is coaching football. The kid is probably lazy and needed a foot in his ass. Have you ever played a sport?

How about a link?  Hard to believe USA Today doesn't have better things to write about... probably happens everyday 100 times over.  No, that that makes it right.  But it also doesn't reach the threshold of national media coverage.

Strange.

The only sensible repsonse I can think of is to drive internet traffic to Eleven Warriors, where they have the video of Kerry Coombs, doing his job as an Assistant Football Coach at the Ohio State University.  They love Kerry Coombs for a string of hyper-enthusiastic quotes, Tweets, and YouTube videos.

If Michigan had a Kerry Coombs, the MGoBoyz would be hanging on his every word.  He'd be a God, immortalized on a t-shirt.  He'd have his own YouTube channel.

Kerry Coombs is like a combination of Fred Jackson and R. Lee Ermey, except faster and made of nylon.

Enjoy.  Happy Friday:

Good thing the kicker is not a Boren. He would run off and cry to the press about the lack of family values at OSU under Urban, and he would transfer to Penn State (God knows UM wouldn't take him).

Justin Boren didn't leave Michigan because of salty language by the coaches.  God knows, the Borens -- all of them -- are no strangers to rough-and-tumble yelling.  It is, very ironically, part of their family.

And full credit to the Borens; none of them ever said anything about "yelling" in Michigan practices under the Rodriguez staff as a basis for Justin's departure.

What the Borens said, in their own homemade press release, was a cryptic line about the erosion of "family values" at Michigan.  Since nobody in the press knew quite what to make of that, they assumed "yelling in practice."  Why that assumption was made has always been a mystery to me.  Because the real reason was pretty apparent.  The real reason was that Zach Boren didn't get a Michigan offer, as all the Borens hoped and expected.  And they were so pissed, and so frosted that the Boren family history with Michigan sports (Father/Mike, Mom/Hope, Big Brother/Justin) didn't warrant at least a legacy scholly for Zach, that they yanked Justin out of Michigan's football program in a rage.  "I won't have my two sons playing for two different universities" was the closest thing we ever got to an explanation from Mike.

Justin Boren was a good football player and we missed him on our O-line.  Zach Boren got the last laugh, switching from FB to LB and becoming an OSU captain.  Rich Rodriguez was fully justified; his offense didn't use a FB.  And nobody, not even Jim Tressel, figured Zach as a LB in college even though Zach played some LB in high school.  Lloyd Carr (who may have promised Mike Boren a scholly when he was recruiting Justin) remained his inscrutable.  And our old friend Michael Rosenberg covered himself in shame as always, by speculating about the nature of Michigan football practices that he hadn't attended even though they were open to the press (and so his colleagues knew that Rosenberg was not present).

Just another MGoDay.  Gald we could get this MGoMyth settled.

And if I'm perpetuating the myth, I don't really give a damn because he was still a little child about leaving UM. He could have been a man and said the real reason for going to OSU (which apparently you know) instead of the cryptic "family values" excuse for leaving. He created the myth by citing "family values" which only led to speculation by the fans and the media.

I'm not going to cry for Justin Boren. It's not like he is the model for taking the high road. See Rich Rod Halloween Costume.

It is not a simple pro-Boren or anti-Boren equation.

I was trying to be accurate.  I don't think that it was helpful to Coach Rodriguez to use false excuses (fat... lazy... hates bad language...) to blame Justin Boren, who was a 20 year-old and a very potent Big Ten guard.

I always think that the nuanced story (nobody's perfect and there are two sides) is generally more credible than two-dimensional caricatures.  Problem is, simple caricatures are easier to spread, and they have more potency in the minds of a sometimes-disinterested public.

Anyway, it assuredly wasn't Justin who dreamed up the "family values" press release.  Whether Mike and Hope Boren had help, is beyond my knowledge.  People can like the Borens, or they can hate the Borens.  What people can't do, is to blame Rich Rodriguez for any "erosion of family values" because that was the one part that was beyond dispute; it wasn't true.

I hate Ohio State as much as the next guy on this board, but clearly whoever wrote this article hasn't played sports, much less football, in his entire life. Coaches yell. They criticize. It's part of their job, and they're just doing it to make you better.

The only real news here is that USA Today thought this should be news.

I like this.  Anything potentially bad for Ohio is good in my book.

Also, the issue is not that he's berating him during stretching. Sure that's normal. It's that he is denegrating the "kicker" role.  Where does the top kicker want to go as a recruit...the place where Coombs coaches..."your just a kicker."

Plus this is Old School.

The New School approach would get him a blond or brunette....or in this case a red head.

no joke its hoke

to me this is a non story but where are the Michigan fans that whined and cried because RR said bad things practice?? I know there are some on here, but i bet it was just because it was RR.

Really, everything OSU does is evil and stupid and cheating and .....   What that coach said was nothing and it was funny.

Am I that old and out of touch at 35 to be completely puzzled that this makes news?  Is it the 10 minute news cyle or do young people really think this is offensive?
