i went through nearly two packs of cigarettes, and all of my finger nails from the first minute until the final whistle was blown. my lungs, and fingers are not going to be happy with me tomorow.

Didn't know this was on until someone I work with told me they were running towatch it.  Caught the last 20 minutes, and yeah that was good

Shortly after the game ended, I sent a text message to a friend, writing what I posted here.

I was too busy with rapid-fire upvoting to have read the full text of what you'd written; but I see that you got here first with the reference.  So, I guess I should feel somewhat RED-faced.  I've upvoted you again here.

The Shawshank Redemption remains one of my favorite films.  I guess we both were thinking of that scene when John Brooks was lying prone on the ground after scoring that goal.

but thanks! Great minds think alike? Plus, it is a very famous part of a very famous movie. Still, WE thought of it first! I'll choose to believe that & will upvote when on laptop, good sir. (I genuinely thought I was ultra original until I noticed a few others reference it but I did have that half hour or so of deluded glory ha)

Advice: GO OUT for the the next game with a group of friends. To a sports bar like BWW or something.

Amazing atmosphere. Place was electric all game. Dempsey's goal less than 40 seconds in set it up.

The game-winning goal.....place exploded.

The World Cup is truly awesome when you experience it with a crowd. Will definitely be back on Sunday.

Also: this was the first-ever win over Ghana for the US. 0-0-3 vs them prior to today.

Just because I post here a lot, doesn't mean I don't get out.

I went almost twice a week with friends during college football season to watch week games, as well as seeing most of the World Cup matches at BWW or a WC gathering.

Haha, yeah but that post was very much a "I remember my first beer" post.

Let you rock out at many a bars for many a sporting event in the future.

I was at the Brown Jug and it was electric.  Not sure where for Portugal.  Possibly Connor's.  Jug was great, but the frat brahs got annyoing when they got drunk, constantly saying (yelling) how Bradley was shit and only was on the WC team b/c his dad used to be coach.  It took everything I had to not get into an argument.

Agreed. Something about soccer and the World Cup - I think it's the magnitude of a goal - makes watching it in a public venue amazing. It's interesting. I love other sports too, but soccer's my number one favorite by far to watch in a crowd.

I really, really don't care for soccer that much. I've really tried. I honestly have. I just cannot bring myself to watch it. I know that I can't appreciate what I don't understand, though. I'm not giving up yet. It took me a while to be able to watch (and love) golf on TV, too.

All that said, GO USA!

Looks like a carbon copy of the Michigan-Kansas TREY BURKE game. Absolute despair and people calling it over well before the finish... then BANG JOHN "TREY" BROOKS TO THE MOTHER FUCKING RESCUE.

But seriously, really hilarious to read that thing knowing what transpired.
