Urbans All-Access on ESPNU

Was watching the Sugar Bowl from this past January and got caught up watching this show that followed.

I don't know man, Urban just seems to me to be too nonchalant in many instances. He comes off like he's the star and ohio is lucky to have him and ooh look at how interesting I am, whatever. I think ohio deserves better to be honest and this whole Urban thing could blow up in their faces. It's gonna be real interesting to see how this all plays out.

Question, who out there as an M Fan would trade Hoke for Urban? I know I wouldn't..

It is spelled HOKEAMANIA.  Our coach is an ass-kicking American citizen, not one of the Beatles, for Christ's sake!

I most definitely wouldn't trade Hoke for Meyer, but looking at how his offense progressed in while he was coaching at Bowling Green was impressive to say the least. He might come off as nonchalant but there is no doubt the dude can coach. Would I want him at Michigan? Hell no, but that doesn't mean he can't be successful at OSU. I think the biggest issue for Meyer will be his defense and I'm curious to see if he will be hands-off with the coordinator in complete control.

The spread is superior to other offenses.  It's the only offense that can allow a team with lesser personnel to beat one with superior personnel.  If Meyer is allowed to gain traction, and he is able to keep it in his pants around the coeds, he could be very successful in Columbus, where lesser personnel is never an issue.

Meyer had two serious issues in Gainesville.  The most publicized issue was that he had at least one affair with a coed.  This, of course, was the source of his "family problems."  The less-publicized, but more important issue was pressure from the Brantley family and other powerful alums to try and make John Brantley IV into a star at Florida, while training him to be a servicable NFL QB.

In other words, he was under pressure to scuttle the offense that won him two "national championships," solely for the benefit of the Brantley family and their cronies.

My hope is that Meyer has two bad years, gets the same kind of pressure regarding his offense from Ohio alumni, and turns back into the coach who quit on his team twice in less than a year.

Superior?? 30 NFL teams would dispute that. However I get the point about lesser personnel and I agree somewhat, although Stanford over the past 3 yrs is a pretty strong counterpoint.

Problem is, going full run first spread is going to lose you certian recruits. Big cannon armed, high IQ quarterbacks, big wideouts with NFL dreams who have no interest in blocking all day for that speedy QB, big NFL style O-lineman who know that the big leagues want them at 330lbs and therefore have no interest in slimming down to 285 and learning to create downfield seals for the aforementioned speedy QB to run thru. Big bruising running backs that are still NFL prototype that spread guys pass on because they are not "shifty" enough in the open field.

My honest impression is, if you're a team that cannot traditionally draw the top level of traditional NFL style players, you should go to a spread style attack. It will give you the best chance to compete with the best. If you're a top tier school with the ability to land NFL bound studs in spades then its probably not for you. This was always my dilema with the whole RR experiment at Michigan. Why?? We had a solid tradition of churning out quality NFL QB's, RB's, 0-Line etc but we were underachieving mostly due to a brutally conservative coaching philosophy. All we needed to do was inject some youth and energy into our coaching staff and foster some creativity in playcalling. We could draw NFL talent and once again can so why settle for slot ninjas, run first QB's, undersized Tailbacks and undraftable O-Lineman and rely on sheme? We were giving the "best" recruits away to OSU, MSU, Wisky and opting of specialized guys that mostly have no chance to excell at the next level.  It seems to me thats what indiana, northwestern, minnesota and illinios should be doing to try and beat the NFL loaded Michigan, OSU, Wisconsin's and Penn st.'s of the conference. Its probably their best option, I never thought we needed to resort to it.

He's also placed 2 QBs in the first round. Kids look at the coach's success in the draft more than pro vs spread system.

There is a reason Urbans name was never mentioned once for the Michigan job. Ohio and Urban deserve each other. Just go ask Florida people close to the program what they think of him. Same goes at Utah.

Out of a sense of loyalty and a desire to not contradict my post sigs, I don't like Urban Meyer either.  (I should also note that I found the Urban Meyer quote from an OSU blog.  Oh, irony)  But... let's not forget he had an out in his contract at UF to go to OSU, Notre Dame *and* us.  I'm glad we got Hoke, but Meyer wouldn't have been a bad choice at all.  And honestly, after last November, when it comes to evaluating character in college football, it's kinda like Penn State  <-----> *gaping chasm* <---------> everyone else.

I can understand their line of logic;

The previous high-profile hire that proved he could beat Michigan in a bowl game was hired.

Disaster ensued.

This high-profile hire proved that he could not beat Michigan in a bowl game; this must mean that he will have a 10-2-1 record against Michigan.
