7 years 40 million??!! Does that make him the highest paid coach in CFB?
No, it makes him the highest paid coach in semi-pro ball.
And the 6th highest paid employee over the past 10 years at ohio football corp.
to anything until the NCAA ruling is out.
I havent heard whether they got their expedited video conference the week of Nov.28.
They are looking at the decision after all bowl bids are out.
My guess he wont come if there is a bowl ban.
I don't think money is the biggest factor here. He's already rich. The value-added by $40 million after you've got $30 million isn't quite as high. For a guy like Meyer (Stoops, Brown, Saban, Hoke, Ferentz) it's about competition and the desire to coach.
I had an epiphany about this yesterday. We should WANT Urban "Legend" Meyer in Cbus.
This rivalry NEEDS the 10-year war again. It was the best rivalry in football when we play each year for the B1G championship, when the record after 12 years is 6-6... this 9-1-1 record, followed by the other team going 7-0, is BULLCRAP. That is NOT a rivalry. It has lost its status of greatest rivalry in sports -- because it got lopsided, each way. USC-ND did the exact same thing.
We should welcome those morons (see: Adophus Washington's comments yesterday) going 11-0 before we play them. We need to be 11-0 going into the game each year. THAT will bring the rivalry back.
Bring it on. I hope they go undefeated all 11 other games. Its what we NEED. We should ALL want it. It's not enough that we go 12-0; we need to do it by crushing OSU hopes in the process. THAT will bring us all "back."
So stop with the denials Urban, step up and LETS DO THIS THING.
This x 1000. Sure, I would like a year or two of OSU fumbling around under fickell, just to give us time to catch up in recruiting so that we enter the the next phase of this rivalry on equal footing, but I am totally with you. Bring on Meyer. I want these guys to be great, so that when we get great, our games get the hype of the 2006 match-up of undefeated #1 vs undefeated #2. I am so sick of watching the SEC have the top billing match-ups (see LSU / Bama).
That's because Notre Dame is making a hard push for Urban Meyer (via ShitNDNationSays).
Also we better keep an eye on Hoke. They're throwing his name around as an upgrade. #MostDelusionalFanbaseEver
#MostDelusionalFanbaseEver doesn't even do them justice...
For the record. I like Herbie. But, he said on mike and mike that out of respect, he would talk about fickle because he has a game, why did he break the story about les and lsu in 07.
didn't talk about Les Miles in '07 ...
Not So Fast... wait, what did you just say to me?
I think you have too many F's, unless you're more agitated about this than I would expect... or it stands for Not Safe For Factory-working Manufacturing Foremen or something obscure like that
I see what he did there - Not So F*cking Fast My Friend - a reference to Corso's f-bomb this past saturday. Well done, OP.
This is a done deal. They are not doing this behind Fickell's back as he will be the coach in waiting when Meyer leaves. I am sure Fickell has been involved in and is embracing this move.
As a Michigan fan, I like this move. Everyone can bash Meyer all they want, but I think he will come in and run a clean program. Something Tressel clearly did not do. As I understand it, the main reason Meyer really left Florida is because he didn't want to cheat like everyone else in the SEC.
That's an interesting point. I never have seen anything about him wanting to leave the SEC b/c of all the cheating and paying off players/recruits. Where did you read that?
it was Florida and Meyer that was very vocal about setting hard rules to stop oversigning and that it would not be done there. I don't know if there are facts that back up their stance but I do remember that.
Gotcha. I always put urban in the same class as the rest of the rule bending cheats in the SEC. I was not aware of that. Good for him for trying to stop it and winning without oversigning.
Where did you hear that? And he's heading to OSU where cheating is frowned upon? Just look at Washington's quote from 247 yesterday and you understand what they are selling the kids down there.
Obviously cheating hasn't been frowned upon, it has been a way of life down there. How else can you explain sure 1st round picks coming back for their senior year the last several years.
Tressel was a flat out cheater, and he was clearly good at it. I just don't think Mayer rolls that way. I could be wrong, but I think Michigan will be on a more level playing field with him over Father Tressel.
Its funny to read things like Washington's quote from yesterday and spin them the way we all did, but you do realize that what he was saying had nothing to do with actually cheating right? He is an 18 year old kid who said something that was taken the wrong way, it was not an admission of anything. He was trying to compliment the academic support system OSU offers to its athletes; if a Michigan commit tried to do the same thing we'd commend him for it.
Sure, they might not be acting behind Fickell's back, but how do the assistants feel? They have to know that most of them are out if Meyer is in. And granted, they'd likely be out at the end of the season anyway, but they still can't be thrilled that their "boss" is negotiating a soft landing for himself during the season that will at the same time cost them their jobs. I imagine it's a tense coach's room right now.
Bill King was speaking about this on Monday. He said with conviction that the football offices were very divided and in utter chaos right now. He said over and over they were a mess and a nasty environment lately.
I can imagine. I would be so pissed if I was Bollman or one of the other top assistants. They probably already felt that Fickell didn't deserve the head job even on an interim basis and then to see him essentially say "well, I can make sure I have a job here, screw the rest of you," has to tick them off beyond belief.
They're professionals and I'm sure they're trying to minimize the distraction for the players, but I can't see how this internal strife isn't a good sign for us.
How can anyone say he led a clean program? By the letter of NCAA law, maybe. But his team had something like 45 players arrested during his last few years in Florida. Somehow this now gets whitewashed, even though the media was all over it at the time. This is the OSU version of clean. I really can't believe a school in as much trouble as OSU is in would hire a guy whose players annually filled the police blotter.
Maybe they have a deal in C-bus that if a football player is arrested they go directly to the coach's office and do not collect $200. That way it doesn't get out to the media.
Greg Mattison was his lead recruiter. What you say now?
Yeah this is pretty much looking like a done deal. Not really very happy about this. I think that we've got the coaching staff to compete with him on the field, but it'll be a lot harder to be in ur state stealin ur dudez with Urban on the recruiting trail.
"Ur dudez" better want to play in constant shotgun & spread formation. If "ur dudez," such as Brionte Dunn, want to play manball, we'll be competitive.
Plus, UM (how odd are THOSE initials) needs to go down to SEC territory to get the speed he wants. He's not particularly going to lock up 20 recruits a year from Ohio and PA.
Finally, defensive players have no reason to be particularly enamored with UM (NTUM). He is an offensive guru. At FLA, it was Mattison and Strong who lured in all the great defensive recruits. So, advantage UM (YTUM) there. Guys like Stroebel and Ringer etc. wouldn't necessarily be changing their minds just because they are bringing in a shotgun offensive coach.
I guess we'll have to see who he hires as his defensive coordinator then. He's done a pretty amazing job with that in the past obviously.
I agree, we can continue to compete in the region recruiting-wise based on ND and OSU being in the spread (good for QB, running back, and wide receiver recruiting), and varying needs of each team in a given year, however:
a) OSU seems to have done pretty well defensive coaching-wise over the years. Why would Urban Meyer significantly change that staff out?
b) If the real recruiting king at Michigan is Mattison, how long until Mattison retires? And will Brady Hoke > or = Urban Meyer name-wise by then?
Mattison is great this year, and will keep us competitive in the near future, but still recruiting kids in Ohio against their home state school, who have grown up in the Tressel era is going to be tough rowing. Adding Urban Meyer gives them the reason to believe that will make it tougher.
They way I see it, we need to get to, and win the NC game before the sanctions come off OSU or they will blow by us again.
Unless you truly believe the spread will never work in the B1G ...
Yes Ohio, you are playing on a 6-5 team for a Lame Duck Coach in a Lame Duck System that will be obsolete the second your bowl game is over. Also, no one cares about you, this season, or your coaches. It's all about Urban right now.
Think about that when you are running out of the tunnel at The Big House
Hmmm I wonder when Urban Meyer will be announced as head coach.
If he actually said something like, "I will NOT be coaching next year." Then I might think about it, but he's never said anything like that.
I guess the whole 1 year he spent with his family was enough time. He's a hypocrite just like their old coach, so he will fit right in.
But you didn't show the motto that's painted on the trucks:
They're the Potentate of Totin' Freight!
yep, its happening
never final until Kirk Herbstreit says it is...
Do you think that he'll incorrectly report that it's a done deal that there is a package deal for Meyer to be the Head Coach with Kirk Herbstreit as his quarterback coach?
And Chris Spielman as his defensive coordinator.
What's holding up the deal right now is that ESPN won't release them from their contracts unless OSU agrees to take Pam Ward too.
is likely lobbying very hard to be taken along as the RB coach.
And Urban Meyer keeps saying, "Yeah, but you're just Robert Smith."
For all you guys calling Meyer dirty you do realize who his best recruiter was while at Florida?
I don't think Mattison was involved in any underhanded stuff so I give Meyer the benefit of the doubt and you may want to slow your roll on bombing Urban.
with the countless, pointless comments once you reach 100, right?
brought up with Herbie, and also covered on the local cbus sports station a couple times yesterday: will Urban's offense work a) at OSU and b) in the B1G?
I say, bring it on, so we can beat it in The Game. It'll at least be more fun to watch than Tresselball or Walrusball.
Sigh...i miss the good old days on MGoblog when all we used to talk about was Penn State....
wow your F5 key have any paint left on it? This is like your 6th post in this thread, all 4 word replies to someone that contributes nothing to the conversation.
