Urban Meyer post-game comments

Submitted by GratefulBlue on

There's probably discussion of this buried in some other threads, but I didn't see a board topic.

Was anyone else shocked at Meyer's post-game comments and demeanor? Calling this season a "grind" and saying something along the lines of "nothing's ever good enough" . . . he seemed pretty down considering his team just beat Norte Dame in a major bowl game. Looking at what happened with him at UF, I'd be a little concerned if I were an OSU fan. That did not seem like a man who is enjoying his job.

We've all seen this season how teams can assume their coach's personalities, and OSU looked listless and disinterested most of the year. I get that they won a championship last year, but it's not like they were on an Alabama-esque tear of multiple titles in a short span. Especially compared to Harbaugh's ebullience after the Citrus Bowl, Meyer seemed like a coach on the verge of burnout.

if it happened...don't forget who is now out of a job...Mr. Chip Kelly.  Can you imagine having Kelly's offense and their typical ohio defense, which would still be good, even though Kelly never had a great D, but he'd be in ohio and he'd still be getting all those kids from ohio for his D.

Chip Kelly wants no part in dealing with Harbaugh again on a yearly basis. Plus he'd also have to deal with Msu, Iowa, and Wisconsin regularly. That's like playing 4 stanford / stanford lites. And doing it for a fan base that would eat him alive worse than philly did. He's not coming to Columbus.

Which is why, in a weird way, it is probably a good thing for us they won the championship last year. It just raised their level of expectations and dissatisfaction and disappointment for them when they don't get there.

(They also raised the profile of the B1G and made it more of a guarantee to make the playoff if we can win the B1G championship. If they had lost to Alabama last year, after the poor showings of MSU and Iowa this week, winning the B1G would be called into question).

For a hyper-competitive guy, he and his team sure looked unfocused and unprepared during that MSU game. If it had happened on the road against a different team, it would make more sense to me. But all year he and his team knew MSU and UM would likely be the two games that would determine their season. To play like that at home is tough to explain.

Urban is a very hot and cold coach- he is brilliant but focuses in such a manner that when he is "on" its not fun. Hence his off games can be pretty off. Few people notice that his NC teams almost always have a near miss loss to a bad team in their resume- this has always been the case- even in his FL days

have a near miss or scare or two on their resumes by season's end.  Michigan struggled to beat Iowa at home in 97.  Colorado had its 5th down against a crappy Missouri team and went on to win the NC. Tressel's 2001 OSU team almost lost to Purdue and Illinois in consecutive weeks during their 2002 run. Auburn had to scratch and claw at home to beat barely beat a Clemson team that lost 7 games in 2010. FSU is the one of the few teams in recent memory that I can think of that handled their regular season schedule pretty comfortably and went on to win national title. It's incredibly difficult for any team to play at its highest level week after week.

responding to MonkeyMan's implication that somehow Meyer is unique because his great teams have struggled with weaker teams on the schedule from time to time. That description fits a lot of great coaches and great teams.

Meyer laying an egg against MSU in 2015, yes, that one is hard to explain.  But if Jim Harbaugh replicates Meyer's success at UF and OSU at Michigan, I'll gladly take it even if I had to endure a rare flop.

Well they did miss out on a National Championship due to his mismanagement. The ND game probably helped confirm that for him. I'm sure that's gonna make him sad and disappointed in himself.

I don't want to read too much into it but it seems like Meyer is irked that it's "never good enough" because the fan base feels that way but he doesn't. It seems to me that Harbaugh is so maniacal, that might never happen with us. That is, our own fan base might have unrealistic expectations to win the NC every single year, but in Harbaughs case he'd feel the exact same way so there's no perception of "them vs me". Instead it's all "we have to do better".

I'm not sure we'd ever be that way because well...we've never really been in that position ever. Our 1997 team was a surprise as they started out ranked in the 10s. The closest thing we had was ranked top five in 2007 and we know how that went. If 12-1 is a dissapointment...sign me up because we haven't had a season end with one loss since Harbaugh was a player.

First and foremost, burnout has happened with him before. I think it was a grind becuz they are not used to losing. They were all in in defending NC, that didn't happen. The QB controversy and player issues had to of been tough. These guys put on a facade, but they are still human. Our jobs get to us. I wouldn't be worried yet, but I think this has the potential of history repeating itself...like Florida.

except the part about not being used losing.  I mean they only lost 1 game this year (same as in 2014).  A one loss season that ends in a Fiesta Bowl route over ND is not really 'getting used to losing' (unfortuntately).

In 2016, however, I do think Meyer will have more of a taste of 'getting used to losing.'  They graduate/early entry lose a ton, and they have a much harder schedule in 2016.

No matter how stacked the roster may be, it is near impossible to lose as many starters as they are going to lose without some consequences.
