Now that Ohio is circling the drain, get ready for more and more of these Urban Meyer to OSU stories. I know, I know, 2008 and Tebow and all that, but still. It would be a homerun for them.
The Urban Meyer drumbeat gets louder
of the endless "Bob Stoops to Notre Dame" stories. That really panned out.
...that the thunderous Jim Harbaugh to San Francisco rumors were proven to be true.
Or the thunderous Jim Harbaugh to Michigan rumors.
...recall those. Where did Les Miles end up?
Someone feel free to post if you have the ability to.
Kyle Kalis when discussing his Michigan choice:
"It was just the great family atmosphere at Michigan. All the kids in the class … I'm close with Tom [Strobel] and Bri'onte [Dunn] - Bri'onte's not in the class, but I'm close with all these guys. Chris Wormley, all these guys - Maggs [Erig Magnuson]. The coaches - it just felt like a family there. It felt like home."
Thats got to make you smile :)
It makes me smile he mentioned Brionte Dunn as member of this year's class. Ear to ear.
Well he is correct. Meyer is probably one of the few that can save Smith and McGee (although it really shouldn't). It would be a homerun. But I honestly don't know if he'll be ready to come back yet. Only one year removed in a great job that let's him be with his family and no stress. The itch might not be big enough yet.
Who is McGee
I have a feeling most MGoBloggers won't catch your reference to a mid-90's straight-to-VHS Christian cartoon character created by Focus on the Family. Just a hunch.
I thought that was one of the Snap, Crackle, Pop guys. I think Kellogg's has a copyright infringement case there.
"They came from the trees man...Here's to Snap...To Snap!"
Damn...I was going with a keebler elf
I figured maybe a few people would have gotten hooked regardless of the content due to the rockin' theme song.
To my shame. My 11 year old snickers every time we drive by it.
I could have done without the CCD flashback but well played anyway sir!
However, I think I know who would be shown the door first. Not sure Gene would be able to pack his belongings.
Everyone is assuming that Urban Meyer would want to be the coach that leads Ohio through years of sub-Tressel standard records. Ohio will be very closely watched by the press for years to come because of how they have repeatedly been caught in lies this time around. The nickle and dime violations will continue to be unearthed for years. Think of Miami and how they really have never recovered after getting tooled years ago. Ohio may well be the same scenario. The question may be if he would be interested in their athletic director position and who he might be able to attract. It has to be someone willing to be very patient and take a lot of heat for years to come.
Or Jim Harbaugh to Michigan perhaps?
...it shows how little relationship these rumors have to final outcomes in the annual coaching carousel. The intangiibles and politics that go into the selection process, and the personal interests and economics of getting a coach to leave a job in which they are successful for a higher paying, potentially career-ending position elsewhere in a town with an impatient fanbase are complicated.
I'm pretty sure that the process will remain forever opaque to those of us that can only watch from the blogosphere. I guess at least speculation will always be entertaining.
That drum beat has changed to RAMING SPEED the way the OSU season is going. Keep dreaming.
"ramming" or "reaming?"
Ohio fans must be forgetting that Florida had 30ish players arrested during the Myers era. Ohio players have shown that they aren't smart enough to stop with the improper benefits even in the wake of Tressel resigning, etc. What makes the fans think they'll stop for Meyer?
I guess if "everybody cheats", then you might as well just get the best football coach you can find and not worry about all that NCAA regulation stuff.
...and they don't care. It means absolutely nothing to [most of] them. A vast majority of the world knows that football is not the most important aspect of a university. Unfortunately, much of the SEC and most of Ohio are the minority.
was at UF a fifth (sixth?) of the time Paterno has been at PSU. That's a lot more years to accumulate arrests. You're not too good at this sample size thing are you? (see my reply to one of your previous comments)
Well, Braxton Miller would be a good fit for Meyer. Hopefully they just give Fickell the full-time job. He's doing a bang-up job.
I am with you, I have no desire to see Urban come out of retirement any time soon. I hope he is happy just being "Dad" for a good long while.
He's a great recruiter, he's young (and will presumably learn as he goes), he's a die-hard OSU guy, and OSU showed a lot of fight to take that lead against Nebraska before Miller went down...What we're seeing this year from OSU's offense has to be taken in the light of seeing a team that lost it's best RB, best WR, starting QB, and starting LT. Bauserman is probably worse than Sheridan. OSU is very young on that side of the ball.
I cede football X and O knowledge to you, but my familiarity with OSU makes me think that Fickell could be a good pick for them in the long run.
No matter how many times you think about it...
it's not going to happen.
I watched this for like 10 minutes.
It never happened.
That one married guy on here -- you know the one with the wife -- is absolutely going to freak out.
Hopefully they hire him and fire him after only 3 seasons.
Its funny how they think their program is so elite that even with the NCAA raising the hammer, they can get ANY coach they want. I seem to remember that Tressel was NOT their first choice, others had declined the job.
I was having to listen to a lot of Cleveland Sports radio at the time of the Tressel hiring and the hot candidate at that point was...Minnesota's Glen Mason....and obviously his hot wife.
Mason was never offered, but a lot of people wanted him. He was winning a lot of games at Minnesota at the time.
So was Bo...
Doyel is possibly the most entertaining writer at CBS. Check out his hate mail every week. It is the funniest thing in the MSM right now. However, he has one giant flaw: his predictions don't pan out very often. If he ever decided to gamble, he would be the kind of guy that pays the bills for the hotels.
I hope Meyer isn't stupid enough to go to OSU. If he is, his "health problems" at Florida will start to look like a 24-hour flu.
Maybe in a few years. I'd assume Meyer waits in the wings while someone else struggles with the bowl ban and scholaraship reductions. Once tOSU is back to full strength he swoops in and saves the program.
One of the camera guys on his show, is a friend of mine. he loves him. He is great to work with, and has great info on both teams. He takes this job very serious. He brings in film that he broke down to the camera meeting. He does this so the crew can pick up keys and things to look for while shooting the game.
I hope he stays at espn. He is a great coach and a great recruiter. Him not going to osu is good for Michigan. Urban is working the Michigan game this week. Go Blue!
Urban Meyer bailed out of Fla because of the pressure. Tosu is already a sucessful football program. He has nothing to prove there. He will be expected to win every game and if he doesn't the pressure will be intense, more so than Fla.
Indeed. The pressure was so intense at FL that Meyer needed to leave, even though FL was one of the 2 or 3 most elite programs in the country with an ideal situation in terms of recruiting and national exposure. Meyer had all the tools he needed to succeed at FL and the pressure was still too much.
He will have just as much pressure at OSU, but this time coupled with unreal expectations. OSU is not one of the 2 or 3 most elite programs in the country. Meyer will be expected to achieve what he did at FL, but this time without all the tools necessary.
OK. Sounds pretty heart-healthy to me.
Expectations are OSU are certainly sky-high, but I don't know how unrealistic they are. For all practical purposes, it's the only BCS-conference school in a very talent-rich state (yes, they technically share the state with UC, but that's a little commuter school). That's a terrific advantage. And they've done a lot with it, going to three BCS title games since 2002. If UF has higher upside than OSU, it's not by much.
Wants no part of the pressure that will come at OSU. You think Florida has pressure? Come to Columbus and this delusional fan base.
My guess is that college coaches see OSU as a place where you eventually get eaten alive. While the average Michigan fan sees Tressel as a cheat, a lot of coaches seemingly do not. I think that they see a guy who tried to do things the right way and who made it to a BCS game almost every year and who was still (basically) fired. Add in Meyer's health problems, and I don't see him wanting to enter the pressure cooker that is Columbus.
The sample size of 1. Always a statistical advantage.
Woody Hayes, Earl Bruce, John Cooper, and Tressel were all either fired or forced to resign. Also, Tressel's experience (and Fickell's) has/have the most to say about what the next coach's life there would be like.
Wasn't there some story about their fans' forcing a former player to move his family to Tennessee, or something?
Has anyone checked this?
When/is there a ruling by the NCAA? Will a new coach (Urban) wait until a verdict is reached?
Urbs will be coaching Penn State in the future
Chris Spielman, Meyer's broadcasting partner, was on 97.1 The Fan in Columbus yesterday and said that the report of Meyer visiting Penn State was completely false. Meyer, along with Spielman and some other friends, were hiking up a mountain the day that the report says he was in Penn State's AD's office.
Urban Myers would save that cesspool in Columbus from ruins, and provide instant credibility the likes to which they don't deserve. I pray they don't get him and yes I'm a hater. Buck the Fuckeyes!!!
You can't treat stupid.
Negged for "fuckeyes"
he went to florida so he really wouldn't have to leave the state to recruit, and he dosen't want to travel much.
If he winds up in B1G it will be at Penn State.
Lulz. The Bucknuts are already speculating on who would become Urban Meyer's defensive coordinator and staff. Seriously:
and here too:
Hey, if you're going to have delusions of granduer, they might as well be really grand ones!
Every single Ohio State coach since WWII has been forced out in disgrace.
Every single one.
If Meyer goes there, you'll need to question his mental health, not just his physical health.
I would think that Meyer would want to have some serious control over who he is playing and what not. I've read that he would want one of "his guys" in at AD before accepting a position, so that would completely debunk this article.
if OSU turns around and dumps >$5 million/ year onto Urban's lap and hires an upgrade to Tressel, with little to no real penalty to OSU. They won because of cheating and are rewarded for cheating with the best coach around?
I have to believe that if OSU ever gets a guy like Meyer, their penalties would be worse.
What makes anyone believe that Meyer would voluntarily tell his entire family to go jump in a lake so he can voluntarily submerge himself into the most caustic, stressful and health-jeopardizing environment possible?
It would never occur to Ohio State fans (nor Notre Dame fans back in 2009), that Urban Meyer may have already found a good place.
Ridiculous! Of course he wants to "come home" and coach the Buckeyes!
It's one thing to hope for a miracle all the time - I mean, sure let's suspend the natural order for a long while and keep everyone hanging in disbelief.
Except, no, Ohio State fans take it a step further - "please suspend the natural order (miracle) and do so IN OUR FAVOR".
I don't think Meyer returns to coaching at the college level. He doesn't need to lift OSU out of the ashes. He's already done that shit 3 times over at BGSU, Utah and UF. If he ever does return to football coaching, then it would likely be at the NFL level where he might still have something to prove.
Hiring Meyer would be almost comically self-destructive. A school whose players have run wild off the field hires a coach whose players ran wild off the field. Methinks this would not go over well with the OSU trustees -- not to mention with the media. Meyer is a terrific coach but also a sanctimonious phony. Florida's academic standards were laughable, and the team had something like 30 players arrested.
And this CBS guy is an idiot. Meyer, he says, would be the right guy for OSU because his teams never ran afoul of NCAA laws. They just ran afoul of the law-law. Now there's some logic.
see no evil, dude. Knowatimean, nudge, nudge, eh? Knowatimean? Eh?
I guess my first thought is 'so what'. I think we got a good thing going here at UM and Meyer doesn't scare me. He's a fantastic coach but he's proven he doesn't have the ability to balance life, family, etc., in a tough coaching environment. This isn't a criticism of him, it just tells me he thrives with balance. Working for ESPN is a good thing and I hope he makes the best decision for himself and his family. If he takes the Ohio job I think Hoke vs Meyer will be the real deal.
is the guy. Problem is, why in hell would he ever leave OU for OSU? Wouldn't that just be putting stupid in the middle, know what I mean?
IF Meyer ever returns to coaching in college he'll go to PSU. Paterno has always been his reported idol and the above comments are right, the pressure cooker of insanity in Cbus isn't worth the therapy bills. PSU has the patience an understanding that could feed Meyer's ego and ability to build a winner. But, why leave the sweetest gig in TV? The only reason is that competitive nature that some coaches just have.
Would Saban ever consider leaving Alabama? Could he get bored there or want a different challenge? Not necessarily now, but maybe in a couple of years, or do you think he wants to break records at Bama?
What if Carroll fails in the NFL, could he come back and ressurect the Buckeyes after the fall is completed?
has a dirty past. Ohio would be insane to hire him
has a dirty past. Ohio would be insane to hire him
Having been a UM fan since birth in Ohio, the 80s and 90s were a glorious time to taunt the Buckeyes on their turf. Moreover, you saw the "M" at Cedar Point 90% of the time vs. the "o" (won't capitalize it).
But since Tress they have become unbearable. The Buckeye fans' of the 2000s is a different breed of the 80s - 90s crowd, which still had some decorum.
The 2000s Buckeyes are Juggalos, 99 cent store Buckeyes.
The modern day buckeye is a base human incapable of discerning right and wrong, rules and consequences, immune to tradition.
They need to hire Spielman, insert some discipline and decorum and respect for tradition.
Honest question: Surely there are a couple OSu fans out there who have realistically broached this subject and pondered over who may replace Fickell (assuming he gets replaced). Surely their list is greater than Meyer and Stoops, right?
FWIW, the latest rumor I've heard down here in Columbus (comes from someone who is friends with an OSU athletic board/committee member/rich man) is that the latest name being tossed around is, "a big name, but not the big name you are thinking of."
I translate that to mean "not Urban Meyer, but someone else big time." I know this isn't overly informative but it does come from a pretty solid source and may point to someone else BESIDES Urban Meyer.
A coach who had 40+ arrests in 4 years? After this fiasco, it's too great of a risk.
Those dumb "watching tape with Urban" sessions which run every Saturday during College Game Day, featuring Urban breaking down film with Todd McShay (and piss-poorly I might add, better analysis here on mgoblog) feature a picture of Woody Hayes prominently on the wall, visible in almost every scene.... So, if Urban has a picture of Buckeye Buddha on the wall, and remember, this is television, everything is staged, it makes one wonder...
Those poor SOBs in Columbus are in one helluva ride over the next six months or so.
Turns out they've had some pretty deep budget cuts at tsio and won't be able to fly around in a corporate jet a la Dave Brandon to seek out their new head football coach. Instead it will be...
That would be interesting if the fate of a man who appears near death were linked to the fate of a man who would surely die if he coached in Columbus....
I can't see any of the publics tops candidates wanting to get involved........
