Urban files complaint to B1G

Submitted by marti221 on

I didn't see this posted yet, not really sure if it's post worthy. But apparently Urban has filed a complaint to the B1G about the whole "eye gouge" incident. I tend to lean more towards the side of this type of thing being pretty prevelant in the trenches, and no action should really be taken. However I do think it IS pretty "Bush League," as that idiot Matt Millen put it on CFB Live.

I don't blame Urban for this, it was not something that should be tolerated. Looking at the video, it did look like both the MSU and OSU guy were trying to do the same thing, still not cool to tolerate it.

Well, it's not valid in the games my crew works.  Usually you have at least 2 if not 3 covering officials in 5 man mechanics and in college they work 7 man so you have 3 to 5 covering officials.  Dead ball unsportsman like 15 yards and a first down.  Second offense in Florida is removal from the game...an ejection from any game results in an immediate 6 game suspension that can extend into the next year (if you have one).  You can appeal but it takes 2 weeks to hear the appeal.

I hear the same meme about holding as well, but this is for a different thread.

Just to be that guy, the correct term is Bush league, as in out in the Bush or the Sticks. It is a baseball term stemming from small town, minor league teams. It isn't referring to Busch Light drinkers, or hillbilly types.

Bush League is an old baseball term for the minors but NASCARs lower series (now Nationwide) used to be the Busch Series since the beer was the main sponsor - so really both work just depends if you think Busch is worth drinking

If mork is going to report the tape incident to the league office, he shouldn't be shocked if Urban does something in retaliation. They both seem petty right now

This kind of stuff happens, just not always caught on film. I saw both guys trying to do the same thing. Dantonio obviously coaches his guys up better at the technique, though. MSU getting bad tape from Ohio and now this, the heat building between these teams is nice to see.

how hypocritical. brandon spikes in 09 as a senior eye gouged a Georgia tailback when Urban was coaching at florida. The man sat Spikes for a quarter the next game.

Spikes is actually the one that made the decision to sit out the entire game. I apologize for not finding the story or a link, but I'm not able to right now. I'm sure someone else can search it quickly, I'm just in a hospital waiting room. I believe Urban suspended him for a half (maybe a quarter), but Spikes stood up and chose to sit the entire game.

Yes, this stuff happens all the time.  No, it should not be completely overlooked.  No, we don't need to spend any more time talking about it.  Both coaches look like whiny little girls.

iirc, in the post-game interviews after the loss to Michigan State last year, everyone representing Michigan bit their tongue and refused to complain (about the Denard Helmet twist, and Gholston behavior, and what happened with Lewan, etc., etc.,) The comments from Michigan coaches and players were all along the lines of, "Football is a tough game, and you have to play it that way." Even is Hoke filed something with the league office, it is important not to whine, but to learn from the situation and play hard the next time.

I guess it is ok for Meyer to bring this to the league office, but complaining usually doesn't end all that well.

On a related note, I think it is becoming increasingly clear to Ohio fans that in the Big 10, it is open season on Braxton Miller. They have to see some of the similarities between what happened with Denard the last couple years, and what is happening with Miller. Miller is clearly a great athlete. But there comes a point where you have to weigh the benefit of a QB putting himself in harms way for a first down, versus saving yourself for another day. I wouldn't be surprised if Miller is pretty beat up by the end of the season. Nebraska will be tough, and it doesn't hurt Michigan that Ohio plays Wisconsin the week before.
