Its early but its building..I know it doesnt mean much but i want to see Michigan with that #1 next to them..its been too long.
spoiler alert: i linked this
Don't be a jinxer
Why even start a thread if its early? Wait until less than 5 minutes or something.
Because i want to drink my beer and talk about this game..and get the fuck off my lawn
It's less than 5 to go. Can we talk about it yet?
Now we know who to blame if Duke ends up winning.
As soon as he clicked "save" Duke scored to end the 8+ min drought.
I don't want to go to baseball game with this guy.
Can't believe you fell for the early lead deception.
Don - my favorite curmudgeon. Don't be so pessimistic all the time. Life's too short
I'm just keeping the seat warm until he shows up tonight.
And it's not pessimism anyhow... I don't give a damn whether Duke wiins or loses, I've just seen the script in football and basketball a million times when the underdog gets out to a big lead early and then gets reeled in by the better team. Tonight is one of the exceptions, and I'm wrong bigtime.
For all you crying "jinx," this lead will be tough for Duke to overcome.
My name is Dustin too.
The "jinx" won't be beaten until michigan wins tomorrow......
Edit: .....and Sunday at Illinois.
That first half was pretty much porn for all the Duke haters out there.
Miami is playing well and lighting it up from three, but Duke has been struggling big time on offense to help Miami build the big lead. Let's hope they can keep it up. Remember, Miami beat Duke last year at Cameron.
Miami cheerleaders make me feel funny, like climbing the rope in gym class.
Never go dook.
I'm not actually rooting for Duke at all. I hate Duke. I'm making fun of them. I figured by spelling 'Duke' 'Dook' people would get that, but apparently the downvoters did not.
42-19 at the half..Miami is not a bum team so that is a big lead..If that is not Upset Alert status then come back later when you see fit
In kind of related news, why was Duke ranked #1 again anyway? All I read recently is that they aren't the same team without Kelly. Doesn't that justify not putting them at #1?
Argument understood, but the other side of that coin is their body of work and it is the best, so, #1 they are. Their time will come (i.e. they gon' lose some games and dropppp!).
Miami's run was pretty outrageous. Duke could hit nothing and Miami was hitting everything. They got a ton of 3's and And-1's in a row there
Yes, It was cool and i had so much fun i started this thread..I am a Duke hater
Duke down by 25 points at the half!!! Dot forget we still have to beat Purdue and Illinois in Champaign so lets stay focused either way though go Canes!!
This is ridiculous. Obviously they have the talent to come back...if they find their rhythm. Wow this is crazy. All teams are vulnerable...
Select Duke statistics at halftime - Amile Jefferson and Mason Plumlee are tearing it up with 5 and 4 points respectively. They are 8-36 in the FG department for a whopping 22.2%, 2-11 from 3-point land and have made 1 free throw in 4 tries.
Miami, on the other hand, is shooting 58.6% and Durand Scott has nearly outshot the entire Duke squad, including the bench.
/ kool-aid man
Barry flippin' Larkin's kid plays for Miami. Color me intrigued...
I loved that story of the kid's little league coach telling Larkin's wife that whoever taught the kid to swing a bat didn't know what he was talking about. I wonder how the coach felt when he was told that Pete Rose taught the kid to swing a bat. Derp.
Yeah I caught the tail-end of that piece they did...Heck of a story!
Duke is good and will always be Duke. But they aren't winning anything without Ryan Kelly.
How are they overrated when they lost 1 (and maybe 2) to good teams without their best player? They rolled a bunch of top 15 teams prior to that.
What top-15 teams did they roll? Kentucky, who they beat by 7 and just lost to Alabama (for their 6th loss)? Lousville by 5 who just lost by 9 to Villanova? OSU by 5? They did roll Minnesota.
Point is, their UK win doesn't look good anymore, and Louisville is looking like a paper tiger, and those were both close wins. They pulled out OSU after trailing the whole game, and yeah, Minnesota.
I'm not saying they're not good or anything, but to say they rolled a bunch of top-15 teams isn't stretching the truth.
Non conference of any team us included, they didn't beat any perfect teams, but lots of good wins...
I agree with you, but that group isn't as good as it looked before, since both Lousville and Kentucky, the latter especially, are worse than originally thought. That, and the fact that this game is Duke's second away game all year (NC State was the first).
hindsight is 50/50...they were ranked #1 and lost (again). All that matters is we play smart throughout the season and ride into the tournament with a lot of momentum
I'm not sure I've ever seen anything like this...holy sh*t Duke!
Came out of the half and Miami picks up where they left off. They're just playing harder than Duke.
Leading by 30 points with 18 minutes left. This means: If Michigan beats Purdue and Illinois soundly this week, Michigan WILL BE #1.
Kansas just beat a #11 team on the road. We play 2 non-ranked teams. They will get the nod for #1, not us.
Yeah, but we already beat them, and by more.
I'm not saying we're a shoo-in for #1, but I don't think your reason will hold a lot of weight.
The transitive property does not work for college basketball. It's all about what have you done recently. We moved up after beating a ranked Minn. Kansas wil move up after beating a ranked K-State. Simple as that.
That's not transative. I'm not saying a > b > c, I'm saying that a > c says nothing about the relationship between a and b since b > c as well.
Someone said they'd be #1 because they beat K State, but we already did that.
They only have the one game this weekend. With a big win on Sunday on the road, that might help mitigate their better win. Also, M was 56 points ahead of them in the most recent AP poll, and had four more first place votes.
The Coaches Poll will probably belong to Kansas, though. They have a twenty point and seven first place vote advantage as of Monday.
The Big12 is basically Kansas, Kansas St. and a couple of bubble. The 3rd best team is possibly Iowa St., who has already lost to Iowa.
Michigan will be #1 when they win their last game in the NCAA tourney.
I fart in your general direction.
Ryan Kelly for the Wooden, obviously.
just turned it on at half. duke is getting absolutely embarrassed
1) Miami isn't that bad (didn't realized they were #25 and of course at home.
2) I feel really bad for the Duke players. They are probably gonna get whipped with razor wire when they get back to Durham. All behind closed doors of course.
I'm not even exaggerating too much, either. Coach K is an absolute bastard off camera
As to your latter statement, never read it on twitter, can't be true.
there's pictures of it on Instagram, so it must be true!
Michigan football or basketball was ranked #1?
Too fucking long !!
1997 Charles Woodson ... ?? or am i forgetting a great memory ?
January 1998 (football).
December 1992 (basketball).
Turned the game on to be entertained and it is nothing more than a foul fest. Both teams just about in the bonus 6 minutes into the half.
Up 30 now. Shane Larkin just hit a 3 from deep.
Today in class trey burke told me miami was going to beat duke, he can do everything.
Is Trey Burke THE_KNOWLEDGE?
Even if Duke loses and we win our next two games, I still think Kansas will be ranked ahead of us since they just recently beat a good Kansas St. team even though we beat them too.
his argument is that they beat Kansas State and we beat them too. Hard to argue with that logic
I think people are forgetting a key fact here.
If Mich and Kansas win out. Michigan will be 19-1 and Kansas will be 18-1.
Sure I think Kansas would probably move to number 1 in the coaches, but there is no way they jump Mich in the AP. Beating a ranked team recently (Kansas beating #11) looks good, but more wins will always look better when you already ranked ahead of them. Even just by 1 spot.
Hey guys, remember when that Duke fan came on here and told us how about how being ranked #1 meant nothing? I'm starting to think that he only said that because he knew they would just get knocked off by 30 when they got back to #1.
This is getting ugly.
Larkins is pretty good.
This is beautiful!
This game is terrible
|Field Goals||16-57, 28%|
|Free Throws||7-13, 53%|
Being #1 has been a curse this year. Remember that if we get the top ranking next week.
No, i will not remember that
The only time being #1 in basketball is worth anything is at the end of the championship game. Otherwise it's not worth a bucket of warm shit, to quote Harry Truman.
But Truman was just pissed because he always picked 'University of Missouri - Kansas City' in his March Madness bracket and he always lost. He thought the whole championship game deal was a bucket of warm shit.
Now that I actually have the game on, it looks like this lead might be too large for Duke to overcome.
Did Watson help ya figure that one out Sherlock?
I kid I kid! Just teasin'...
Really though, the lead they developed was legitimate. Miami has been in control and I don't think at any point was there really any concern that Duke could chip away to get this back to manageable..
Yeah I think the jinx has been averted.
Didnt see this one coming. Curry 0-10?!?! Just wow...
I'm almost worried that Miami is going to be so good they make it to the final four. Seriously every time this team is on tv they kill it.
Vitale sounds suicidal.
He's on record as of tonight opining that Michigan is the best team in the country (he has "seen" I suppose could be the kicker) thus far in the season.
Start it up ... BEAT PURDUE !!!!!!
Those alley-oops for Miami have been open all night. Ridiculous.
Butler just lost.
Guys, I think Duke wont be #1 next week.
Coach K's are flaring so open right now Vitale could shove his bald dome in them no problem. This is a beautiful beat down. Go U.
I rofled louder than I have in months.
Watching Plumlee and Duke get OWNED is awesome if only for one night.
And how about Butler losing to LaSalle? Georgia is beating Florida.
Was paying attention to that. Bummer...I've adopted Butler as my go-to team not name Michigan
Looks like a crazy night in college basketball.
Duke is going to lose. Butler already lost. Floriday is down by 3 to Georgia at the half. Drake is beating Creighton by 16 at the half. Fun night upcoming.
After layup.... After layup.... After layup....
I think they just broke Dick Vitale.
Dicky V is losing it.
When does that ever happen?
They are losing by 35! Pretty unreal, watch them drop to like #4 after this.
Hello Mrs Larkin!
Duke is fouling with under a minute left and down 30? Really?
Coach K always a dick.
Duke got 60 and Miami only won by 29.
Here comes the court rush!
Fuck duke, lose with some class...going for the steal down 30 with 10 seconds left? Lame
/this is probably overreaction but it seems very duke like to me
No over reaction. Spot on.
Wow, I actually typed that with a straight face. I'm going back to my beer and not type all the immature things I want to say about Coach K right now.
I wonder if Coach K was harping on them saying they'd better work hard to the last second. There was a play in the 2nd half where they inbounded the ball after giving up a bucket, and Miami came and stole it, took a shot, missed, got the rebound again. At that point you could tell Coach K was going Brian kelly on the sideline.
and near upsets tonight. I'm so happy we play tomorrow night.
Jinx That ! Canes win 90-63
No 30 point win?! You did jinx it you bastard!
Jebus, 27 points? Has Duke ever lost by 27 points?
I think Clemson blew them out 74-47 a few years ago.
Years ago, maybe in the early 90s, I think they lost by 30 to UNLV too, but I could be wrong.
Oh yeah, and on bigger stages than this. They lost BIG to UNLV in the 1991 championship game by 30 points, 103-73.
That Duke-UNLV game was the last college basketball game played before the Fab Five hit the scene.
At a press conference before the championship game the next year, when Michigan was set to play Duke, reporters asked the Fab Five what they had been doing a year ago as high school students.
Jalen: "I was home in Detroit, rooting for UNLV."
Ray: "I was home in Texas, rooting for UNLV."
Chris: "I was in my living room, rooting for UNLV."
Jimmy: "I was at my friend's house, rooting for UNLV."
(From "The Fab Five," by Mitch Albom)
1990. Then they upset undefeated UNLV next year in the Final 4. #payback
Gotta beat Purdue and @ Illinois if we want that #1 beside our name.
Dang, this title needs to be changed.
#1 Duke goes down by 30
#9 Butler loses at LaSalle
#8 Florida down at the half to a terrible Georgia team
#17 Creighton getting blown out at a middling Drake team
What in the world is going on tonight?
I'm happy we play tomorrow night. Hah.
B******. - Jimmy King
Was the definition of evisceration...
Miami had that lead at halftime, lol. This was a perfect storm of a college bball game. Rarely does a team hang 70 on Duke, so 90 is hilarious (with 80 of those points coming in the paint, lol.)
Kansas is going to get a fair amount of #1 votes as well
Seth Curry was 0-10 from the field... ouch
For all the #1 talk we've got to take care of two things:
Kansas beat a solid team in K-State, more recently than we did I might add. We don't have as much flash-in-the-pan after this week even if we win both games.
Also I'm bugged that we'll probably be #2 in USA Today/Coaches poll, but that's just me...
I still don't see how an 18-1 Kansas team would pass a 19-1 Mich team if both win out. Both teams have 1 loss to a ranked team, and 2 wins against ranked teams. The only edge Kansas has is that they have 2 road wins over ranked teams.
Michigan having an extra game over Kansas is just too much for them to pass us in the AP poll. At the same time, no way we pass them in the Coaches.
I don't see how it doesn't make sense. I'm not talking about the AP where we would undoubtedly be #1. Polls tend to follow the "step-up" approach. The better question is, when Kansas leads M this week in the Coaches' Poll, beats a ranked team on the road and (hypothetically) a top-25 RPI team in Oklahoma while Michigan beats two unranked teams (again, hypothetically), why in the world would they switch the two around?
Duke students always get mad when they don't get a chance to enjoy the team at their best.
(Note: If you're too young for Elton Brand, this was the Duke student that got pissed because he declared early for the NBA before she could sleep with him.)
Still looking like that, I'll be Elton Brand for 3 or 4 minutes.
Is this a video clip or something?
Purdue makes me nervous now. I think I'd be less nervous if they were a ranked team but now they make me nervous in a underdog/i-hope-we-arent-sleeping-on-this-game way
I'm more worried about Illinois shooting 60% from 3 against us. We are their #1 rival after all.
27 points 3rd biggest loss by a #1 team, and tied for 6th biggest by Duke.
Did idiot Lunardi tweet out to "The Duke Haters" about how they are still the best team in the country yet?
Umm, so that Minnesota win might be losing some of its luster. Gophers down 9 with 4 to go at Northwestern.
Unless it's Penn State, all losses in conference get chalked up to how strong this conference is. If anything, I'd like to see NW get hot and back on the bubble. That would boost our profile a bit more.
I mean we have one at both venues so it won't hurt RPI, I believe.
We have one what?
I honestly can't believe I actually just wrote that. Obviously won instead of one. Wow I need to sleep. No excuse though.
NU is about to do a major overhaul on all their facilities.
Tubby Smith is kind of a crap in game coach. So is Crean, which is good news for us, as those two teams are the only ones with as much talent as us in this conference.
I've always respected coach k and his program, but it's bullshit that in a blowout like this. Duke will drop like 4 spots and the u will rise like 13 for beating them. We will see I guess
So, about that Minnesota team that we beat but happens to be on a 3 game losing streak and just lost last night to a not-so-good Northwestern team.
