Updated Scout 2012 Basketball Rankings
Scout updated its 2012 basketball rankings today. Changes for Michigan recruits essentially mirrored the ESPN ones from last week. McGary fell from #2 to #20 (he's still a five-star), while Robinson jumped from #38 to #27. Stauskas moved into the top 100 at #83.

He just hasn't been nearly as good as he was during the AAU season.

These rankings aren't final are they? Because I seem to remember Anthony Davis overtaking Austin Rivers wayyyyy late in the summer after the McDonald's All-American game last yr.

He was sure to point out that the bad showing at that one game wasn't a big deal, but all the recruiting services, including the one he works for, seem to disagree. He doesn't have to be in lock step with what they say, but it seems there's some discrepancies here.

His numbers haven't been stellar all season. I do think some of it is the fact that his team has no interest in passing him the ball, and he's been good on the defensive end and the glass.

I watched "that game" and he didn't look like a 5* to my uneducated eyes. That being said, I'm not sure how anyone could look like a 5* when they don't get a single pass, when there isn't one play run for them, etc. His team plays like a pack of annoying guys in a pick-up game...Look at me drive and take a wild shot! Watch me shoot a terrible three! Mitch's only scoring opportunities came when he crashed the glass to pickup a board from a wild shot from one of his teammates. It'll be really interesting to watch him play on a team, a real team...with proper coaching.

You ask a good question, for which I don't have an answer. Maybe the exposure was the thing? The TV guys, during the game which dropped Senor Mitch, repeatedly commented about how good the coach was, but it looked like a crappy all-star game to me. Maybe his style is just run-and-chuck it but if you've got a team full of high D-I talent, anyone can be a great coach.

He and most of the players at brewster wind up there for academic reasons, Mcgary is old because he wasn't going to qualify out of high school originally, but yeah, its generally academics as to why kids wind up there.

Sam watched him a lot during the AAU curcuit against Noel, and said he did just fine. He was the focal point of his team's offense and was able to stand out more. He plays on a h.s. all star team full of gunners who shoot at first blink. The drop was expected and probably justified seeming how he hasn't filled up the stats sheet this year, but the AAU performances against the same kids are not a fluke by any means. Consider me not worried.

Maybe because he committed to Michigan instead of Duke or North Carolina. Afterall, he MUST not be as good as we thought he was or else he'd have gone to one of those schools or maybe even Kentucky.

Haven't been able to catch any of his games but from what is being said his team is just not well coached and thus it is effecting his game quiet a bit.

That is quite a haul for M in BBall. McGary is much better than his ranking, as evidenced by his play over last summer over some very highly ranked kids. GRIII is going to be very, very good for us as well, and Stauskas could turn out to be a role player initially that finds himself in the spotlight during his upperclass years. I like it.

The whole ranking think is just such a crock. ESPN says something and then everyone else follows suit. Wow, what a surprise!
ESPN are the idiots that took McGary from sitting on the bench last year to #2 player in the nation this year. Considering he didn't significantly grow or put on huge weight, I find that impossible to beleive. He has a few good games in front of Telep and suddenly he's the next coming of Christ and going straight to the NBA. Now, he has a couple of bad games and suddenly he drops 20 places and he'll be in the NCAA for at least 2 years. Either they way over-ranked him in the first place or they way over-compensated in his drop. Basically, it just means they make knee-jerk reactions to a few good or bad games and then rank accordingly.
If you ask 3 arbitrary people where they would rank Amare Stoudemire, one guy might rank him #10 another #20 and yet another #30. My point is, you'd have a better chance at winning the lottery than having 3 arbitrary guys ALL rank him at the same spot (withiout talking to eachother). Amazing how ESPN, Scout (and I'm sure everyone else) has McGary at virtually the same spot on the way up and on the way down. Also, quite shocking that they do it within 2 weeks of eachother every time.
So, bottom line is that Telep and ESPN make the rankings and the rest of the sheep just follow the herd.

ESPN has him at 22 nationally but Scout has him at 10 and Rivals has him at 3 so no sweat.

We are taking all 3, they are obviously talented, and will bring needed size to the current team. Whether they are 5 stars or 4 stars does not matter now, what matters is when they enroll, how they fit in, and how coachable they are for Beilein and his staff.

Most importantly adding Nik and GRIII is adding a couple of more guys who can get their own shot. A trait that is needed badly on this team.

I think it is possible Stauskas has a transition period similar to what Brundidge is going thru this season. The game I watched Stauskas, he was less athletic than I anticipated, and I don't think shots are going to come easy against BIG competition, especially as a freshman. I think this is why he is not rated higher. His handle and shot suggests a higher ranking.

McGarys team does not run set plays and is just a bunch of freak athletes attacking the rim. He will still be a very good college player, I promise. He is going to help our rebounding out A LOT. i see him as a consistent 12 pt, 10 rebound player.

about the drop guys. Last time I checked, Belein was getting 4* production out of 2*s like Novak and Dougless, 5* production out of THJ (freshman year) and Burke, etc.
Now that we've got a 5*, a SUPER high 4*, and a 4* (we haven't even had 3 4*s since Belein's been here) I think we'll be off to the races. If the "potential lineup" thread is any indication, we'll finally have depth and talent.
Seriously, you can't complain when every need (amazing big, talented wings) has been met and then some. If you guys had been told we'd have a 5*, a potential 5*, and a 4* last year, you wouldn't have believed. Just trust that Belein's eye for talent (recruited them all when they were 3*/NR) is damn good. Rankings are nice to look at, but I'll take Belein's track record on recruiting over anyone, any day.

Even though McGary has maybe dropped a half-notch, the other two recruits have risen a notch. So it's a net gain on a very impressive incoming class, one that's easily among the very best in the country. Although the high class ranking doesn't guarantee on-court success, it certainly will make it easier for M to attract great recruits next year. Very exciting.

Scout has us having 4 commits in our class because it has a duplicate Nick Stauskas listed under 2 different hgh schools. I'd like to know where our class ranks but I can't figure out if that lower ranked duplicate hurts us or if having that extra imaginary recruit is boosting us...

Yet again this shows the point that Scout (as well as most of the other ranking services) are useless. How can you not notice that you have the same guy listed twice? If you're Evan Daniels and you're ranking Shabaz, do you not notice that you have a "Shibazz Mohamed" in Florida and a "Shabaz Muhammad " in Nevada?
How can you trust a thing these people say about any player, when they've proven they have no clue who that player is, where he goes to school, weight, height, nothing?
