Updated ESPN Bball Recruiting Rankings - MM Drops Slightly, GRIII Near 5 Star

Submitted by Matt EM on

ESPN has updated their basketball recruiting top 100 for 2012 - as expected McGary dropped from 5 star to 4 star(#21 player), while GRIII has shot up the rankings all the way to #26(very high 4 star), & Stauskus jumps slightly to #79(up from #83). Overall, I'm pleased to say the least, when was the last time we were able to bring in 2 top 30 players? Coach B has done a great job in all phases of coaching.

due to our current lack of an inside presence, I am extremely excited for him.  Plus Stauskas and Robinson are nice sized wings.  We are going to put out a pretty big, athletic lineup next year!

3 top ten players and the number 35 player overall...that is FAB FIVE kind of recruiting there!

yes, i know that is only 4 players...

isn't over with yet.  He could climb back with improved play the rest of the way. Either way,  I'm still very, very excited about him coming to Michigan.  He has huge potential that our coaching staff will bring out.  (EDIT:  Sorry, by "he" I was talking about MM)

As was commented on by others, I wish ESPN would fix their stats for McGary in regard to his weight.  He hasn't been 225 for a long time now.  You look at him and know he's at least 250.

Then I remember, we have 3 top 80 recruits, and the highest rated ESPN recruit (McGary) that Beilein has ever had.

So. Um.  Yeah.  Things are good.

I have faith Beliein will turn him into a beast, however long may take. Plus, if McGary needs development, he may not be "one and done" and he could be on our team for multiple years until he's ready to make the jump to the NBA.

I figure there is atleast a somewhat strong correlation there.

Its a weird phenomenon in college bb recruiting where slight negative indicators may acutally  turn out to be a good thing for the program.

I'd rather have 2 years of really good McGary than 1 year of awesome McGary.

McGary in many ways seems like Novak 2.0 except much bigger and with the potential for more post-ups. If he plays with the same heart that Zack has played with then watch out America.

I've seen guys like Robinson move up in the rankings over time...but has anyone seen one of the top 5 players drop to around 20 before?  Any examples? And how did they do after that?  Did they prove the ranking drop right or wrong?

The other kid (Elon something, a Jr.) completely dominated Mitch. In fact, Stauskas' team played in the same tournament & Stauskas looked better than MM too. Stauskas' team's C was really nice... goin to AZ, along with a bunch of other 4-5 types. AZ gonna be long!
Anyway, after watching Mitch, I am not surprised to see his rating drop, but also have no concerns about him being a 1 & done! But still very excited to have his large frame inside, and totally understand now why his AAU coach so wisely steered him to Coach B. @ Duke he'd of been shunted to the side if he didn't instantly pan out.

I think McGrary's age is an issue, he's turning 20 this summer and he's bee less than dominant versus kids 2 or 3 years younger than him lately, but he's a good player, the rankings are often based on potential and the scouts see a kid that's already almost 20 years old as a senior in high school they might think he has already reached his limits.

This also puts more pressure on him to go pro early since nobody wants to draft a 24 year old rookie to the NBA.
