he was taken to the locker room, looking at his ankle. not the same ankle he broke last year. he was walking, but gimpily.

Does anyone else remember the quote where he said(and i'm paraphrasing of course), "if i hurt an ankle it won't be the one that i've been rehabbing"

The sideline reporter said he was questionable to return.

You have to wonder why your most valuable DB is on the kickoff team
September 3rd, 2011 at 5:08 PM ^
It seems pretty stupid to me. He is a critical component of the defense. Wonder what the heck the coaching staff was thinking?
September 3rd, 2011 at 5:12 PM ^
It doesn't just seem stupid, it is stupid. So much for having a special teams coach. Our coverage has been lame.
Nice to see Gibbons hitting line drives again this year.
September 3rd, 2011 at 5:34 PM ^
I just don't get it either. Best dback on special teams, they are still terrible, and he gets hurt.
September 3rd, 2011 at 5:46 PM ^
because the rest of our team isn't great. Depth and all means sacrafices.
September 3rd, 2011 at 8:05 PM ^
In fact, when the broadcaster said it I figured he was just making a mistake....like the Fitz being at wide out comment made earlier.
Without Woolfolk we are in trouble. As happy as I am about the win, I don't feel a whole lot better about the defense. Take away the big turnover plays and this was a neck-n-neck game.
September 3rd, 2011 at 9:53 PM ^
It looks like he is acting as a saftey on kickoffs.
September 3rd, 2011 at 9:54 PM ^
he is less likely to get hurt doing that (my previous post wasn't clear).
September 3rd, 2011 at 5:14 PM ^
I said the exact same thing at the opening kickoff. We can't be that desperate.
September 3rd, 2011 at 5:31 PM ^
In '97 we had James Hall, Dhani Jones and Ian Gold on kickoffs. It's a tricky balancing act for coaches. Playing starters risks injury, but if they put out nothing but backups, their coverage will probably suffer.
September 3rd, 2011 at 5:52 PM ^
Gold was not a starter on that team, and Dhani was not an every game starter if I recall correctly. Which is all sort of beside the point, which is that we know this year's team is particularly lacking in depth.
I understand your point, that if some guy goes for a TD return everyone screams "why is Talbott on special teams", but with this year's team, seems like it's not worth risking screwing your whole defense for the rest of the season in exchange for a slight upgrade in athleticism on kicks.
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:47 PM ^
But it goes to show that even on a team like that, that obviously had much better depth than we do now, the staff deemed it necessary to put some key guys out there. It's a calculated risk.
In any event, we obviously need a lot of work on kickoffs.

Sorry buddy, Sam Sword, Hall, Clint Copenhaver, and Eric Mayes started the season, Dhani filled in for him after Mayes' injury.
Gold was a true sophomore. He was a great fill-in but was not in the regular starting lineup and was 11th on the team in tackles that year.

Especially considering the lack of experience & depth in the secondary.
<br>Just un-needed risk, imho.

We aren't very deep, I think that's the main reason he is..I hope it's nothing serious, not just for the team, but for him, he worked so hard to get back!
September 3rd, 2011 at 5:19 PM ^
The problem isn't with the coverage guys, it's the kick. There hasn't been enough hang time on the kick offs which means the returner gets the ball well before the coverage can get down the field in their lanes.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:15 PM ^
That is part of it but on at least one kickoff there was a gaping hole in the middle of the coverage - the guy wasn't touched before the 30
September 3rd, 2011 at 5:15 PM ^
Just walked out of the tunnel, still dressed, for whatever that's worth...

Yea I was gonna mention after that last touchdown you could see him standing and talking to someone so it doesnt seem to serious.

hard to know why, but seems like some kids are just injury-prone. here's hoping this ding is as minor as it looks. he was playing with some fire early.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:48 PM ^
"Coach Hoke: "Woolfolk sprained his other ankle. If we needed him he would've gone back in.""
Good news.. very good. but still concerned with him playing special teams..
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:48 PM ^
he was alking around and trying to get back in the game i think he will be fine..

September 3rd, 2011 at 10:39 PM ^
It looked awful; Troy going off on the back-bed of the Gator.
He came back after Rain Delay #1. Fully dressed; bouncing around, running around like he couldn't wait to get back into the game.
September 3rd, 2011 at 11:30 PM ^
he looked like the best player in the secondary by leaps and bounds for the time he was in. Need him back big time.
