Update: Treetops Resort now reports $430,000 in damages

Submitted by yossarians tree on

Sorry to poke a finger in a black eye, but this story just gets worse. If you don't want to reiterate, move along.

I can only imagine the pressure inside this frat and the finger pointing, the divergent needs to cover one's own ass and rat out a fellow "brother" versus the wish to circle the wagons. The stereotype says that these kids have a "rich parents" who can easily dole out the money and get their kids off the hook. I'm not so sure about that. And anyway, this is some serious coin we are talking about.

"I heard from a sorority member affected that they did basically the same amount of damage last year that they did this year but were never kicked out or reprimanded, and the going theory is that Treetops only invited them back so that they could kick them out and sue them later."

Good imagination. After last year many ski lodges did not want U-M students anymore, so this year the kids were intentionally booking their rooms with out of state I.D.s, to circumvent the heat.

has there ever been an explanation as to why they did this? just doesn't make sense; cocaine is a hell of a drug? meth?

Whenever you go on a trip like this, whether its a group of friends or a whole fraternity, there's almost always that one friend that has a little too much to drink. The problem now is you have a bunch of people who have way too much to drink. One person does something, and then another, and eventually it moves to mob mentality. "Why not join along?" "Everyone's doing it."

Obviously when you're drinking you hardly ever give real thought to consequences for your actions. I think mob mentality took over, and people, in their drunken stupor, just didn't think that what they were doing was going to cost that much to replace. Or they just didn't think about it at all, which is the more likely scenario. They just wanted to raze hell.

I'm not saying it was a given that everybody did it. I'm saying it's fairly common knowledge of where to go/who to talk to if one seeks it. You can be willfully ignorant if you want or just not care. Michigan like all the other high echelon schools have some interesting side activities.

Straight cash homie.

(I'm not talking about weed)

Because drug use doesn't occur at virtually every college in the world?

Or are you somehow insinuating that had it just been drunk college students, versus drunk AND HIGH (!!!) college students, the damages would have been less?

Lol no. I'm just saying that amount of damage and crazyness must have more than just drunk and high kids running around. I can't imagine high kids being too active if at all. Obviously other drugs at play. It's not that hard to get access to them especially UM. That's all I meant by my post. Apparently people don't like to know what they don't hear/see.

The issue (as I can tell from your other posts here) is that drugs were probably involved, and that seems based on the amount of damage versus some perceived "limit" that alcohol places on destruction.  I'm sure that isn't your point, but that is what I'm reading.

Drugs were probably involved because college kids in 2015, like they did for decades before, can get f*ed up in innumerable ways.  But I absolutely remember places getting trashed when people got drunk, and how people enter into a frame of mind where smashing entire ceilings is "acceptable" is kind of irrelevant to me.  They messed up someone else's place for no good, and if they did so under the influence of cheap vodka, high-end cocaine, Molly, Alabama Crank Yankers, whatever isn't anywhere near the top of my list of things that matter.

"...one friend that has a little too much to drink..."

In this scenerio "drink" means copious amounts of cocaine, Adderall, molly, hard liquor, cheap canned beer. And a complex that the people in this up north backwoods town are poor, dumb peasants in flyover country and I can do what I want to their crappy enclave. My dad's checkbook will take care of it and these rubes here can clean up my mess while I plan my spring break trip to Mexico. Did I mention I'm in Ross? Because I'm in Ross. Or I'm going to law school, bro.

Is the number high enough yet? This is like some Andy Kaufman sketch were the people from the sticks are going to take it out on the rich spoiled kids from the city because of some deep seeded jealousy and inferiority. Hang ''em high!!!! Right people?!?!? They aren't just young, dumb kids. They aren't people!!

Fuck off. The hypocrisy in this is laughable. You're accusing people of treating others like inferior beings while referring to people living in Gaylord as "the people from the sticks" with "deep seeded jealousy and inferiority." You are vile. That's a beautiful part of the world and this represents a huge part of the economy there. I'm in greek life as well. I will happily defend many of its attributes. But they committed a felony and were ridiculous about it. They deserve punishment. This isn't a public lynching. It's a story because of how outsized and malicious it was. They deserve what they get.

I have never met some one from a rural area that takes offense to the term "from the sticks." In fact, many people actively use that term. Are you trying to tell me there is no jealousy or inferiority complex with some people in a small town when Rich people from a bigger city come in? Have you ever heard of the town/gown relation problem at some schools? Or know someone who lived in a vacation town? It happens everywhere. People in Detroit have inferiority complex about Chicago, etc. they are jealous of the stuff Chicago has to do. it's a common thing you see in ciommunitirs. It's why so many people love to hate NY teams. Do you think every person in Gaylord is any different?

This is a joke right? Tell me you're kidding. You have never met anyone from a rural area that took offense to that term? Have you ever met anyone from a rural area? Ever?

You've never been outside of Long Island/Ann Arbor have you? Reading this is actually unbelievable. I'm not going to do you the dignity of even treating anything written in your second to third paragraphs as being worthy of a response. It's asinine.

In regards to your final sentence, I don't think that every person in Gaylord should be PAINTED WITH ONE FUCKING BRUSH.

Do you realize that a good number of people live in northern Michigan precisely because they don't want to live in a place like New York? And that this is a conscious decision?

I realize that people make a decision to move to smaller towns. I made the same decision. I know these things because I have lived in many different towns and learned many things from my life of experiences (which appears to be twice as long as yours). The other thing I learned is that people who get angry and act overly defensive have their own issues with inferiority feelings that they need to examine.

I'm angry and defensive because you were openly attacking a place very dear to me in a ridiculous and uneducated manner and then followed that up with increasingly bizarre statements regarding the emotional predilections of its residents that reeked of a completely unhinged and arrogant viewpoint.

Just like Andy Kaufman's bit!!! He got those folks so riled up over nothing. You HAVE to watch it and imagine one of the wrestling fans saying exactly what you said. It was a great piece of comedy.

There are some people who think this of the ENTIRE SOUTHERN UNITED STATES! It makes me sick when people congratulate themselves for their own very limited worldview and write off millions of people as hayseeds with the sweep of an arm. Guess what dickwad, there are people all over the country living in "rural" communities who are WAY FUCKING SMARTER THAN YOU.

They are young, dumb kids, they are also people. They are young, dumb kids who showed a blatant disrespect for other people's property and are now going to pay for it, as they should.

You and I can't possibly know the dollar value of the damage. It could be $430,000, it could be less. It's useless to speculate on that, and even more useless to speculate that this is nothing more than a cash grab due to "deep seeded jealousy and inferiority." How would you know?

PeterKlima

March 1st, 2015 at 2:52 PM ^

The public demanded the government council prosecute these kids to the fullest extent of the law. It was a unanimous vote in favor. Those people want their pound of flesh. They aren't concerned with just making the hotel whole. So, why do you think people changed their opinion about prosecutorial discretion and forced the city to act? You think the city just had a random attack of justice consciousness? Or do you think they felt disrespected?

xtramelanin

nobody forced the council to vote on it. i think it was merely an agenda item at their next meeting after this happened.   and the elected prosecutor is the chief law enforcement officer of any respective county.  he can do basically as he pleases and the worst that can be done is to turn him out at the next election.  now, mike is going to file charges unless through some incredible miracle they are unable to actually determine some/all of the folks that did this, but nobody has the power to force him to do it.

I don't think they are milking anything. The first thing I thought when I saw those pictures was "that's way more than $50,000 in damage". Now $430,000 seems absurdly high, given that you could buy a large plot of land and build a very large home from the ground up in Gaylord for less than that, but this is probably part of a negotiated settlement in the making. I really doubt that this is the country vs. city morality play you think it is. However, the fact that these frat boys are perceived as coming from wealthy homes may have something to do with this figure. People with greater wealth are generally more likely to fork over large amounts of $$ to make problems go away.

We have a rule for our 2-year old: it's allowed unless it hurts someone else or someone else's property. It took him an hour to figure this out.

...alum who grew up in that area and misses it tremendously I find this entire situation extremely embarassing. I am unsurprised by the reaction of the guilty parties since I knew quite a few folks from that part of the world with a similar mindset when I was on campus.

Personally, if the Unversity really wanted to make a statement about their values they would eject the individuals involved, refund their tuition, and wish them well in life. There are plenty of quality individuals out there that would jump at the chance to take their places on campus.

There is nothing wrong with getting drunk and having a good time, but this level of property damage is the work of a group of people that simply do not share the core values of the University of Michigan that I know and love.

PeterKlima

Let's take our feelings about that "particular mindset" out on these kids!!! These kids are entitled and snotty. I know. I went to UM with them too. But, are you going to give extra punishment to these kids because of years of disrespect from others?
