All over twitter it Pipkins he is moving all limbs
landing spot. will be interesting to see how he does.
All over twitter it Pipkins he is moving all limbs
Just saw that - not good...sounds like his next tweet was that they can't confirm on how serious the injury is and who is involved.
So far, that is unconfirmed by an HVA spokeswoman and I do not know the severity of the injury or who it was. Trying to follow.
I'm much more concerned about the severity than the identity. This stuff goes way beyond football.
This is about life, not wins and losses. Couldn't imagine what it would be like to be a parent of a player right now...
Sometbody lifting without a spotter? I hope everyone is alright!
Hearing this is absolutely horrifying... hard to believe a kid's entire life could be changed at this moment...
is reporting this as well. However, very limited info available. Hopefully this is just a precautionary measure.
Ira on WTKA is saying it is a spinal injury. He is saying he got it from a unconfirmed source so lets hope he is wrong.
Regardless of who was hurt this would be horrible news. There is nothing scarier than spinal cord injuries and I sincerely hope this turns out to be simple a precaution rather than an indication of a career ending scenario. Prayers to all.
I always have to wonder about football when my concern goes from whether or not someone can get up to full speed again (like Wormley) to whether he'll walk again...I just hope that whoever this is doesn't have to go through what Brock Mealer went through (or worse).
EDIT: Moving extremities = great relief.
Just hope it's a precaution.
Anyone know if there was a padded practice this AM? This is terrible.
Lets hope its not as serious as thought, hate to see a young person (or anyone) injured doing something they love.
...it's time to start the prayer chain!
Not that there's anyone I'd prefer this to be, but if it's Elliott Mealer I'll seriously punch a wall.
The exact same thing. As you say, not that you would wish this on anyone at all (let alone someone playing for your favorite football team), but that young man has been through so much already. Shit, let's hope it is all just precautionary.
right there with you, first name that came to mind in terms of hoping it's not him.
it you're on twitter, follow: Kyle Feldscher
"It's likely that HVA will err on the side of caution and not give away too much information. They're bound by HIPAA laws." also noting that any name will likely have to be released by the universtiy.
I'll start to cry.
As others have said, hopefully this is all just a precaution taken by the medical staff. Would hate to see a guy's life be altered by something as simple as playing football.
As a coach, I have had to call an ambulance twice for spinal injuries. Both times have been precautionary and the athlete was up and around that evening. It's still the scariest thing I've been around coaching sports.
A "spinal injury" can only be determined by a neurologist or a neurosurgeon after a battery of tests and imaging, which may include both CT and MRI studies.
"Spinal precuations" are the standard procedures routinely followed by EMT's whenever they are triaging and transporting patients with any sort of a complaint of a possible neck injury. Backboards, neck bracing, immobilization, etc.
"Spinal precautions" is what we know about. "Spinal injury" may not even be applicable in this case.
Yes, they weren't spinal injuries. The spine nor the spinal chord was not damaged in either case. The ambulance was called on both accounts due to a potential spinal chord injury. The EMT's both times took each seriously, as they should, but they were both taken to the emergency room as a precautionary measure. It's still very unnerving to see one of your athletes taken away on a backboard.
not a bunch of notes posted at the same time.
Awful way to start my morning...
Well, at least youre not being loaded into an ambulance...
All of them to be honest
think of corners, safties, WR, RB's first.....maybe a LB that drops their head...
Damn....thinking back though, Utley was an interior lineman.
So was Eric LeGrand and Dennis Byrd...
Hopefully it's not as serious as it could be.
There is a slightly higher risk for receivers and DBs, since they tend to be more involved in high-speed collisions, but it could happen just about anywhere. RBs and linebackers are also at risk, because the nature of the position is that they're leading with the head. A QB would be unlikely, since they usually play with a red shirt in practice.
Hopefully just some fractured or compressed disks or something that implies full recovery, regaurdless who it is...if it was Mealer though, I'll slap god next time I see him.
please be nothing please be nothing please be nothing
a parent of a player right now. As a parent the thought just makes me sick. I can't imagine the panic and scrammbling for more info.....awful. Prayers are with the players and families!
Players have taken shots in just the wrong way that gives them a nasty, temporarily weakening or paralyzing stinger, but it doesn't last and they're fine very shortly. PLEASE BE THAT!
We've seen how hard these guys have been working, so I really feel for the injured player. Hopefully the team and staff are just being careful. Regardless, let's hope for a speedy and complete recovery.
Regardless of who it is, my thoughts go out to them as well as their family and the team. Spinal injuries can end careers and alter lives, so hopefully this is precautionary and a full recovery is possible.
EDIT: Excellent to hear that Pipkins is moving his extremities. Great sign, and hopefully, it's a full and speedy recovery.
I hope this is nothing and it turns out that everything is ok. I have had ambulances called at games and practices just as precautions. I really, really, really hope this is just that.
My thoughts and prayers go out to all the players/families. BIg Picture here is I hope nobody is seriously hurt, even if they never play another down of football.
Never want to hear this..
Perhaps we should shut this thread down until we know more.
May be a good idea...
Maybe it was Tacopants.
Injured player was freshman DL Ondre Pipkins. Had movement of extremities was taken to hospital for precautionary reasons.
8/17/12 5:01 PM
Hopefully nothing major.....
If he's got movement and feeling in all extremities, he'll be fine.
I'm glad to see that the MANBALL philosophy of our coaches doesn't extend to the"if the bone isn't sticking out, you're fine" level.
Get well soon, Ondre! Big Will has more to teach you!
From the future?
Is this her car?
Or is she the companion of this guy?
I'm not in the US right now
and this also made me realize that it's still the morning over there and that they didn't wait all day to tell the media his name. oops.
Where's Chantel Jennings tweeting from? Her tweet say she's tweeting at 5:01pm today, yet mzerbib's post of her tweet was at 10:01 am. Is she covering Pipkin's injury from Europe?
Ondre Pipkins suffered a neck injury this morning but is moving all extremities.
EDIT - 1 minute late. Oops. Either way, thoughts and prayers to the young man I know he'll battle through and be fine
@Heiko25: ...worst case scenario is a cervical fracture, in which case he'll be out for at least two months." Boom Med School'd
mgoblog has an M.D. on staff.
I hope for the best, and the fact that he's moving all 4 extremities makes it less likely that there was cord involvement, but it doesn't rule it out. Not at all. That being said, there are tons of people who present after a neck injury who turn out to have musculoskeletal problems and their spine is fine. No one can honestly know what's going on through the internetz.
News of him being able to move his extremities is good-- spinal injuries can be seriously life threatening. Regardless of football, we can be thankful that this isn't any worse than it is.
Pipkins has been confirmed. He has been moving all his extremeties, which is a great sign.
Thank goodness he has movement and the word "precautionary" was thrown out there.
Well, it sounds like it was precautionary, so that's good at least. Hopefully it was just a stinger.
Thank god he can move all of his limbs, that is OUTSTANDING news. Prayers for a full recovery, Ondre.
It's Pipkins. Suffered a neck injury, but is moving all extremities. Hopefully he got a bad stinger.
Anything we as fans were looking forward to this season. Who cares about schedules, depth charts, rankings or anything sports related at this point. This is about life and really demonstrates how unimportant everything else is. I know we are all on the same page when we say regardless of who this kid is, we are hoping all is well.
They are saying it is Ondre Pipkins... moving all extremities, hopefully it is just for precautionary reasons, and pray for Pipkins to recover quickly. God Bless
Wow. F5 was being pressed more than when we're on commit watch. Thank Goodness he has movement.
Have to agree...
F5 also got one hell of a workout when Bree Evans was reported down on field. God that was awful; I read it here on mgoblog first.
Aaaaaaaand exhale. Glad this appears minor. An awful start to a Friday.
Come on PeeWee! Get better soon!
But precautionary according to Tremendous.
That was scary. Thank God for the word "precautionary." Prayers for comfort, thanksgiving, and a full recovery for 'Optimus' and his family.
thank god it was precautionary. I want to hug everyone.
Thank goodness. Never good to see this happen.
Take care, big guy. We're all pulling for you.
Well thankfully he's moving everything. There's not a lot that can be said here. Football is a dangerous sport. Hopefully he makes a full recovery.
Damn... regardless of what the injury to Pip actually is at this point, its just scary to think you could wake up and go to practice and in the blink of an eye, your season, career, and life could be changed from one play....
I've talked to Ondre in the past, and he couldnt be a more positive and hard-working kid... I know that if the injury allows him, he'll be fighting his ass off to get back to crushing opposing teams....
Get well soon, Pee Wee
I feel that with a neck injury they may need to tell him to sit out this year take a redshirt and let them test him over the season to make sure there will be no lingering injury. Football does not matter at this point dont need him back out there to possibly do further damage.
I agree with the proceed with caution sentiment you have in your post and Pee Wee's health is the most important thing. But I would let the dr's Pee Wee his family and the coaches figure out when he can play again. It all depends on information we don't have access to such as severity of injury and things like that.
Movement in extremities is good. Now the worst case scenario is a cervical fracture, in which case he'll be out for at least two months.
— Heiko Yang (@Heiko25) August 17, 2012
Do you think they had to get some of the team to help them lift the stretcher? Ondre is not a small man.
They have a special winch-eqptd ambulance they use to respond to calls at the athletic facilities.
Hoping that he has a speedy recovery and we see him back on the field as soon as possible!
Prayers to Ondre. As much as I look forward to seeing him play in the Big House, that all takes a back seat this morning. Get better and take care of your health first and foremost. Glad to hear it doesn't sound too serious.
he's moving all of his limbs. I hope he has a speedy recovery!
Prayers for Andre.
Way too soon I know but maybe he can work on a Walter Brennan impersonation.
What happened to Andre? Also, who is Andre? Not a spelling nazi but player names are a little more important and the name is all over the thread. This is how angry young men like Tom Gholston are created. We dont need any more of him.
Prayers go out to the big fella and his family. Have a successful recovery and get back when your ready.
My thoughts and prayers for Pipkins! I hope for a safe and speedy recovery Big Man!
Good to hear that he's got movement in all his limbs. Its times like this where hopefully we all forget about what this means for the football team, and just hope that he's going to be okay.
Take all the time you need, Pip, but hope you make it back soon. There's O-Line shredding to be done.
Best case scenario is a stinger, and if he continues to be symptomatic (persistent extremity tingling), he may be out for Bama.
Worse case scenario, congenital stenosis with a bit of myelomalacia on MRI (born with a narrow spinal cord, signs of spinal cord damage on C-spine); prophylactic laminoplasty, probable career ending.
Even worse scenario; central cord syndrome from hyperextension injury, without ligamentous/vertebral body involvement (upper>lower extremity paralysis, can have normal MRI of vertebral/ligamentous structures).
Worst case scenario: jumped facet, paralysis, fusion.
UM has great neurosurgeons, and a great rehab program
Due diligence; MD, work with spines, UMH grad.
than medical opinions based on twitter.
Other than impressing us with your impressive use of medical terminology, what is the purpose of this differential of yours?
I hope PeeWee is fine. I also hope that you, Heiko, and anyone else so inclined will in the future refrain from making, or at least sharing, medical opinions without having any clue what is actually going on with the patient.
Due diligence: also an MD, remember from med school that following someone on twitter is not a standard part of the H&P
*shrug* your opinion. Some may want it, others may not.
Typically if someone is being put on a board with a restrained C-spine, odds are minimum a LOC on the field. Not sure why people on twitter monitor the AAFD/PDs CBs, but when 'possible SCI' is being stated on folks twitter/news/etc (and I posted a couple hours after it broke), it's a pretty specific differential for a football player.
Would I give a deposition based on twitter sx? hell no. Can I reasonably give a differential based on a 300# football lineman, with a FD/ambulance report of a SCI? Sure.
I can think of much more useless items; and I'm not even a Twitter guy. What they guy suggested isn't a crime. It seems he was being helpful and though the medical jargon may throw some off I don't think he was in the wrong (in any way).
Alas, HIPAA prevents from revealing anything I have seen.
As should common courtsey
you can tell ;-)
But I can't tell you what they are. I just wanted to make sure you know how awesome I am.
My thoughts are definitely with him for a full and speedy recovery.
how much do we read into this? how much is precaution? what does this do to the vibe of a team/practice?
Hate to hear this type of stuff for anyone. Hope Ondre is ok and doing Hoke impressions in no time
Its probably best to avoid tRCMB for the time being...just a heads up
Note to anyone with an IQ over 65, you probably don't ever want to look at that trash.
Spartans are keeping it classy as always?
I really hope Ondre is okay. Neck injuries are always a terrifying ordeal. I'm glad it sounds like it wasn't too serious.
As for tRCMB, everything I've read has echoed these comments. When it comes to serious issues like this, they seem able to set aside the cretinism.
I'm sur this whole situation is very scary for the Pipkins family. I hope Ondre is going to be ok.
I wish Ondre a fast and healthy recovery. Spinal injuries are a very serious issue, and I hope and pray he will recover fully.
Thoughts and prayers are with the big man. Here is to a speedy recovery.
Pip was in my writing class. He's such a great guy. I hope he has a speedy recovery.
Not Peewee! Get well soon bro.
God bless him. I hope he'll be able to be healthy and continue his football career and make a boom this year.
Let's pray for Ondre that this may just be a bad stinger. Here's to a quick and full recovery.
...and energy waves to The Ondre Pipkins.
Has anyone heard any updates since the OP?
Can anyone shed some light on what kind of drills they could have been doing for a DT to sustain this level of neck injury? I mean obviously Eric Legrand was a DT as well, but his injury was sustained running full speed at a guy on a kickoff.
I suppose if someone caught a load of his facemask and gave it a good tug that could do some serious damage. Anything else? Could typical impact OL/DL drills really cause such a serious injury?
Apparently I'm not supposed to give differentials or suppositions as to how or why someone is taken to an ED and admit for obsv. based on twitter reports and speculation.
Yes, it's a snark answer, but in response to being on the receiving end of snark.
But the simple answer is any serious contact (and with 300+ pounders, pretty much anything) that will jam your neck in a flexed or extended position can cause tingling/pins/needles sensation into your arms or feet. Can be one-one position drills, Okie drills.
I'm hoping it's a stinger.
This is a bit OT but my 7 year old just started playing tackle football (I know) and the team he plays for has him at Nose Guard.
The only Technique they have him doing is to bear crawl through the line which for a 7 year old with a heavy helmet on means head down back exposted and bodies falling all over him. I have no idea why they make them bear crawl, can't they just bull rish ala Mike Martin?
I played enough football (mostly an offensive guy) to know this just doesn't seem right and I'm about to pull him from the team if they won't put him at another position. They were checking his neck yesterday after a play and it made me really think once I heard of Pips injury.
Can anyone shed some light on why they have 7 year olds bear crawling through the line head first face down. He's a tropper but I can't imagine he's having a good time out there, and my wife is about to loose it.
Any youth football coaches out there who can lend a hand?
Low man wins...
I've coached d-line and played it myself... Trying to get the fundamentals down for the kids to fire off low so they don't stand up and get plowed by the o-lineman.
Kids have a tendency to stand up and try to run around guys.
Prayers go out PeeWee and the Pipkins family
