UPDATE: MGoBlog Commissioned to Design History Dept. T-Shirts
(formerly the thread Worst Department T-Shirts Ever.)
So a challenge for the MGoArtists out there. The University of Michigan's History Dept. wants MGoBloggers to help design a new t-shirt, presumably for alumni, faculty and current students. Because? I don't know, because we have read more Foner than you and we are are damn proud of it.
Here's how this went down. My Facebook like-ing of the History Dept. brought up the contest, which I linked thus:
The History Department is letting folks vote on which 1-minute photoshop design to use for the department's
IM softball teamofficial 2010 t-shirts.I mean, seriously Marlett?!?
I put in a request to Kathy to let the MGoDenizens have a crack at them, because for real.
And then wouldn't ya know it: Kathy wrote me back:
Seth,
Go for it! I need to be able to get them printed, though.
Kathy
So here's the rules: it's like the MGoShirts. One sided, one color (maize) to be printed on a blue t-shirt. No using officially licensed anything (unless you hear different). Submit them to me unless you hear different. It must clearly say "History" and be obvious it's Michigan. Keep it classy.
UPDATE 2: It's okay to use the official school wordmark as it refers to the school:
Read the rules. You can't alterate in any way: http://www.logos.umich.edu/usemarks.html

We have a Kistory Department? I had no idea.
November 8th, 2010 at 6:24 PM ^
Worst fonts I've seen outside of comic sans.
November 8th, 2010 at 8:00 PM ^
I do all my reports and papers in comic sans and I can only assume that all my profs love it
November 8th, 2010 at 8:58 PM ^
AND I THINK IT IS GENERALLY WELL RECEIVED
November 8th, 2010 at 9:09 PM ^
JUST SAYIN'!
November 8th, 2010 at 10:09 PM ^
IT WULDNT B AN E-REPORT ANY UTHER WEIGH
November 8th, 2010 at 11:11 PM ^
Theres a whole website about it. Apparently not very liked in the graphic design world.
November 9th, 2010 at 8:34 AM ^
its not very funny
just sayin'

This looks awfully similar to the Shoelace shirt.
He is quite close to making history. So it seems quite appropriate. Hopefully they leave a lot of room on the back for all the records he is breaking (and will break).
November 8th, 2010 at 6:29 PM ^
Even the person in charge of the UT sports statues thinks this shirt design is bad.
November 8th, 2010 at 6:55 PM ^
Those are hideous. The model for the Vince Young one must have been a Vinopal-sized guy in blackface (wearing Converse saddle shoes, for some reason). Very funny thread to read through.
November 8th, 2010 at 7:02 PM ^
If you read the entire thread it gets funnier and funnier as you go along. The footballl ones are bad but the basketball ones all look like Michael Jordan, the baseball ones look gay as hell and are wearing heels and the golfers are all Chinese with anglo haircuts.
I about wet my pants from laughing.
November 8th, 2010 at 9:02 PM ^
Did anyone notice Ex-Assistant AG Andrew Shirvell posted on their board (#44 and #45)?
That guy will go anywhere for some publicity.
November 8th, 2010 at 9:19 PM ^
That's Tony Hale of Arrested Development. They do look similar though.
I will feel very stupid if you were joking.
November 9th, 2010 at 9:26 AM ^
It was funny at first, mostly shocked/appalled UT alums. But when the photoshops kick in in earnest, it really is one of the funniest threads I've seen a long time. Lots of win there.
Relatedly, it has to be a rough year to be a Longhorns fan and those statues are just buckets of salt for some raw wounds.

For other comments previously done.
November 8th, 2010 at 9:50 PM ^
OMG....i cant stop laughing at the statues, the photo shops (loved the little girl one) and the comments. If someone ever asks what's the point anyway of a sports blog.....show them that thread and that should answer it.
November 9th, 2010 at 12:56 AM ^
I can't encourage people enough to take the time and read throught this thread. The stunned shock of the Texas faithful, the embarrassment and the humor are off the charts. I was literally crying with laughter for about 5 minutes from page 4 on.
If MIchigan ever ordered ~100 "Asian Replica" statues with serious racist overtones for $1000 a piece to honor Bo, Tom Harmon, Cazzie Russell, etc, it would make the 2008 season look good by comparison.
November 9th, 2010 at 2:17 AM ^
This is by far the funniest thing I have read all week. Just... wow. Those are not statues, they are figurines. They remind me of that weird model the Hare Krishnas keep of their guru in their temple.
November 9th, 2010 at 1:53 AM ^
Hey, I like those statues. I would be pissed if they depicted U of M athletes, but it's an interesting concept executed very poorly.
I'm sure they'll have some sentimental value when they are sent off to a farm upstate. Maybe Lane Kiffin can buy the Vince Young statue and motivate himself by trash-talking the statue.
Edit: Okay, read through the whole thread. That is hilarious and thank you for linking it.

Enough said... that post is classic and full of WIN (if you're not a UT fan); more 100% pure Columbian awesomeness than anything expect Lloyd Brady.
Other great moments:
Colt being chased by the geese
The letter to the school president, "Perhaps you have not attended many sporting events, but Kevin Durant is slightly taller than TJ Ford."
November 8th, 2010 at 6:36 PM ^
That is the best they can come up with? Isn't that the template for every church league softball t-shirt? My 10 year old could do better than that.

(Woody Allen's bank robbery scene from "Take the Money and Run.")
November 8th, 2010 at 6:41 PM ^
Even the S&B "MICHIGAN [DEPT NAME HERE]" shirts looked better than that.
November 8th, 2010 at 6:41 PM ^
Is that really that bad? It does look very similar to the Shoelace t-shirt.
November 8th, 2010 at 6:50 PM ^
Wait, the History Department had official shirts? Is this new? Is there a record of what my Michigan History 2000 shirt should have looked like?
And seriously, please, let the MGoDenizens make it better.
November 8th, 2010 at 7:39 PM ^
Dude, shouldn't you be watching college jeopardy.... (IIRC, you were on Jeopardy before...right?)
November 8th, 2010 at 9:08 PM ^
Yes, yes I was. But I don't watch Jeopardy! much any more. It just ends with me yelling at the screen and during football season, I work most of that out on Saturdays.
November 8th, 2010 at 9:16 PM ^
The kids answered almost everything and I would be shocked if 2nd place didn't qualify for week 2, unsurprised if even 3rd place made the cut.
However, I think this "College Championship" with no Michigan representative is about as valid as the "World Series" of baseball.
November 9th, 2010 at 8:58 AM ^
and it is as generic as possible. cant they figure out an icon they could create for themselves?
November 8th, 2010 at 6:50 PM ^
The M isn't even the block M on all those shirts. Using some random-ass M is not the block M. I'm sure there is artwork available for that.
November 8th, 2010 at 6:52 PM ^
Little off topic but goes along with team shirt idea. Anybody else catch the controversy over Wakefield's Track and Field team shirts?

Awesome - the English honor society for students is named Sigma Tau Delta, so of course all the kids got black hoodies with blood red lettering that say STD...
November 8th, 2010 at 6:58 PM ^
I read the thread wrong... I thought it was going to be about one department producing "Worst Department Ever" T-Shirts a la our "Worst State Ever" shirts. I was thinking to myself, "geeze, I didn't realize there was such a rivalry between departments!"
November 8th, 2010 at 7:02 PM ^
Oh yeah, man. I won't even talk to my Philosophy (more like...Phil-LOSS-ophy!) friends the week of the rivalry game, otherwise known as The World's Largest Outdoor Bluebook Exam.
November 8th, 2010 at 7:16 PM ^
that my stuff comes out looking like this. AIIIEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!
November 8th, 2010 at 7:17 PM ^
that I cannot stop the double post monster. EERRRRKK
November 8th, 2010 at 8:16 PM ^
Gah. That's awful... and none of the others are any better. As a historian I am ashamed.
November 8th, 2010 at 8:47 PM ^
Aargh, bad department, bad. I'm going to start sending back your begging for donation letters.
November 8th, 2010 at 8:53 PM ^
MonuMental, of http://www.theartthearttheart.com/ fame, take a crack at it.
I bet he could design a ridiculous shirt in 1 minute on photoshop, have you seen this weeks design and video? Simply awesome!
November 8th, 2010 at 9:21 PM ^
Every time I see it I read "t heart heart heart."
November 8th, 2010 at 9:11 PM ^
those are just as bad as the biophysics dept t shirt. I was the student rep for the faculty meetings and even I didn't buy one of those crappy t shirts.
November 8th, 2010 at 9:12 PM ^
History, bitches. History.
November 8th, 2010 at 9:12 PM ^
Now I don't want to spend the time actually designing it, but I think the tshirt should include Yay girl blown up as much as possible. How could people resist buying that shirt?
November 8th, 2010 at 9:13 PM ^
Nice Foner reference.
November 8th, 2010 at 9:15 PM ^
This may not work for a softball t-shirt, but for a regular History t-shirt... it would be neat to weave in the "History is written by the Victors"
November 8th, 2010 at 9:17 PM ^
No, no, it's NOT a softball t-shirt. That's the point.
Your idea is good.
November 8th, 2010 at 9:18 PM ^
Well played.
