UPDATE: Lavall Jordan to be next Butler coach

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

Nothing official yet, but looks like Butler wants to keep the job "in-house" and former UM  bball assistant and current UW-Milwaukee head coach Lavall Jordan looks to be the leader. He's had two interviews already and some are saying he's gonna be offered, possibly by the end of today.

Many thought Jordan was one of the keys to the excellent guard/wing play we saw over the years, and were hoping he'd cut his teeth somewhere in time to be a possible Beilein replacement. His rise seems to be happening much faster than anticipated, though. Assuming Beilein sticks around for 3-4 more years, then that'd give Jordan some time to prove himself at Butler and be a candidate to return to Ann Arbor.

UPDATE: From Evan Daniels at Scout, "Milwaukee's LaVall Jordan will be the next Butler head coach, barring a breakdown in negotiations, per sources." Congrats, Lavall!

Butler has a "Michigan Man" equivalent called "the Butler Way" and while this isn't truly in-house it is "in-family." That's how business has been done at Butler for years and years. They highly considered two of the current assistants, but neither has head coaching experience or the success for track record that Jordan does.

That hasn't stopped them from promoting assistants with no head coaching experience to the top job.  See Brad Stevens, Brandon Miller, Chris Holtmann and maybe I'm missng one or two.  In fact, it's gotten to the point where it's a surprise if Butler doesn't elevate someone on the current staff to head coach.

I absolutely agree, but I think the circumstances have changed since moving to the Big East. Also as an aside Holtmann had a short, but successful HC stint at Gardner Webb before taking the assistant job at Butler. He made an extremely savvy move to take a title downgrade to step up to larger opportunities.

If Butler is interviewing candidates, that must mean their former coach actually intends to take the OSU job. I was hoping they would continue to be blown off by every coach they wanted.

He does seem like a nice guy.  I always thought he was an excellent assistant for us.  Hope he gets the gig at Butler.  I would really like seeing him back at UM when Beilein decides to retire.

Good for him to get out of his current job as quickly as possible. I haven't heard good things about the athletic department at that school.

Step One - Gather the team.

Step Two - Measure the length and width of the court.

Step Three - Measure the height of the basket.

Step Four - ?

Step Five - Profit.

(Really happy for Jordan, with the opportunity to join an Indiana institution.  Also happy for Coach Beilein, as this makes for a nice branch in his coaching tree.)

Gathering the team is actually going to be a big job for LaVall. Three of the five signed recruits have re-upped their commitments, but Christian David and Kyle Young haven't yet. Those guys were two of Butler's biggest recruiting wins ever, and it would be a huge statement to get both to stay. Kyle Young would be particularly heartbreaking to lose, because 1) beating out several big time programs for him was a milestone , 2) they really don't have anyone else who fits well at the PF spot, and 3) he has such a high upside for what they have been doing recently. He could easily end up like Alec Peters or Sam Dekker.
