UPDATE: Drake Harris did not tear hamstring

Submitted by OaklandInPlay on

I sincerely apologize for the scare guys.

Drake Harris did not tear his hamstring. A poster on rivals who is usually reliable, assumed it was torn but the mods are saying he just tweaked it and could be out for the rest of spring practice.

With an even more rare common peroneal nerve injury that never improved.  The peroneal neuropathy ended his career.

You can walk with a dense foot drop, so his ability to ambulate was never in question.  He would never be a competitive athlete, however.

When he finally got the enormous cast off, his foot hung from his ankle, limp, useless. The doctors told him he would likely never get feeling back in it. With rehab and practice, he could learn to walk on it — maybe not much else.

The point stands that he was in much worse shape than Harris, but I concede that may not mean Harris sees the field again.

Is there such a thing as a genetically weak hamstring?  Or is a hamstring, once torn, somehow permanently weakened and thus likely to tear again?  This situation seems so unusual.  Are there any doctors in the house who can explain this?

not a doctor, but I CA. give you my anecdote. born with extremely tight hamstrings. I have never been able to touch my toes for example, despite being a bean pole. my hamstrings feel like rubber bands abound to snap if I don't do a lot of stretching. I have never torn one thank goodness, but I was never performing at college level. in short, he may not have "weak" hamstrings so much as tight hamstrings. they can be stretched over time I am told, mine never did.

There are A LOT of things that could make a person prone to muscle strains. It's hard to speculate without knowing more about this particular case. We don't even know if all the injuries have been the same leg, let alone contiguous within the same muscle.

Not a doctor, but this is what I got from the looking it up.

After tearing a hamstring muscle, a person is 2 to 6 times more likely to suffer a subsequent injury. Surgery is required to treat the most severe cases. However, in most cases, hamstring injuries are managed with physical therapy.

There is a huge thread over at Scout right now discussing the possibility that Drake may quit football and try his hand at UM Basketball. Sam Webb posted in the thread stating:

The basics are Michigan approached a player about taking a medical scholarship and that player's family is weighing the options because they don't believe the player's athletic career is over.  They're going to explore whether continuing an athletic career at Michigan is one of those options.
Sounds like it could be Harris to me.

Can't speak for Harris, but in my college sports career and after, my hamstring tears would never go away. stretching, strength training, utlrasound, etc etc etc and the problem never went away. Very aggrivating but it seems like there are those that just can't get past it.

He's had issues with this hamstring 3 times right?

Hard to tell without knowing the details of each injury and his past medical history but probably not. However, by now the physicians treating him should probably start to suspect biomechanical issues that need to be corrected.

Get healed up Drake. Hate to hear this for the kid. At a position where we need players to step up and produce. He was getting good reviews in practice too. Shit sucks.

Feel really bad for the kid.  Hopefully he can take a medical this year and then maybe, eventually, heal up and get back on the field at some point.  Seems to me like he needs to see a more specialized orthopod to consult with and maybe a more focused physical therapist as well (assuming he hasn't already, which sometimes is surprisingly the case).

Calling Mgostrength. Is this just an issue of this kids hamstrings not being strong enough? It's got to be hard building up strength in a muscle when you've been tearing it for three consecutive years. What I've seen in in my years of following the NFL is that once these things start to happen they don't stop. Sad.

Hamstring injuries are notoriously fickle injuries. Once you tear one there is no guarantee that it will ever fully recover, and odds are you will continuously have hamstring difficulties from then on. He's torn a hamstring twice now, which is possible to come back from but it doesn't bode well for the rest of his athletic career.

At this point you really have to doubt he's ever going to contribute to Michigan football. Looks like he has the China doll syndrome. He hasn't played a down of competitive football since the state championship game of his junior year of high school. He has chronic leg problems

It's such a shame because he is a dynamic playmaker at wide receiver that Michigan desperately needs. Best of luck to him and if he wants to do the rehab and come back, more power to him
