Unwarranted Gary Harris love

Submitted by Franz Schubert on

Harris was named one of 15 Wooden award finalists along with Nik Stauskas. Petteway from Nebraska would have been more deserving from the B1G.
Harris has had a rough season, his shooting percentages are way down. His defense has not been very good either although the meme is still strong in the media. Harris is a low efficiency high volume shooter.

Harris has shot the ball 376 times this season with 158 made baskets.

Stauskas has shot the ball 296 times with 145 made baskets.

Stauskas has outscored Harris 485 to 478 while taking 80 less shots!!!

I think he's been great, a lock for a top-10 draft pick. It'd be a giant mistake for him to return to MSU next season. Let the era of Costello/Valentine begin!

I wouldn't mind if the hype took him to the NBA and away from us though. Let them lose Appling, Payne and Harris. I'm fine with that.

It's not like a Michigan player was snubbed by his inclusion on the list and it's obvious he's not going to win. It's probably time for Michigan State basketball to drift away from the forefront of discussion around here.

His shooting percentages are down, but he's still pretty darn good. He's the volume offensive threat and they rely on him to so a lot which may be affecting is overall stats. But still a top notch athlete and a good defender.

Harris is a very good player, I'd take him any day. He should go pro and let the Alvin Ellis and Gavin Schilling era begin. And LouRawls

If that was your point, you didn't provide any evidence for it.  Instead, you compared Harris to Stauskas, who also made the list.

So what does a Harris vs. Petteway comparison look like?  Using your own criteria:

Shooting Percentages?  Harris .421 vs. Pettaway .429

Defense?  Harris 2.0 spg; 0.4 bpg  vs. Pettaway 0.9 spg; 0.8 bpg

Low-efficiency, high-volume shooter?

Harris has shot the ball 376 times this season with 158 made baskets.  Petteway has shot the ball 382 times with a 164 made baskets.

Over the course of the season, Petteway took 6 more shots and . . . made 6 more shots.

Oh yeah, Petteway's team: 18-11.  Harris's team: 23-7.

This is totally thread worthy.

Petteway as you said, shoots a higher percentage than Harris. Petteway is also the conferences leading scorer and gets to the line more frequently than Harris who seems content to jack 3's. This is illustrated by the number of FT attempts as Petteway has shot 172 FT's, while Harris has only shot 118. Petteway also is a little better rebounder than Harris statistically. One thing that is abundantly clear is that Nik Stauskas is in another world efficiency wise, and should easily be B1G player of the year.

I believe the media votes on the Wooden All-American team, from which the winner is eventually selected, beginning in the middle of this coming week. After that, the team is announced during the Elite Eight and then the winner, as we know, is announced during the Final Four. That makes for a field of 15 being narrowed to 10 and then 1, and it is entirely possible that Harris does not make the first cut, but both Stauskas and Harris were not on the midseason Top 25 for the Wooden, so for both of them, this is some nice recognition of their value to their teams.

I think the unwarranted love is due to the fact that he is a good pro prospect, but your right in general that his play has not warranted being on the list.

and Tyus Jones. Last year one of my friends was talking about how good State's recuiting class would be this year, but guys want to play for Coach K over Izzo. I don't blame them with Coach K's 4 national championships. However, anyone who wants to play for Calipari is a head scratcher.

He's got a big crying baby whining for him after the game. That's why he's there not for how he's played. I can't wait to beat state again next weekend.

I think a more accurate thread title would have been "Unwarranted Gary Harris hate." Give it up, who cares about state or anyone on the team? He's a great player, we have one as well. Ours happened to help contribute to a B1G Title and season sweep of his team.

I don't know if Stauskas is deserving of the award, but I'd pick Stauskas over Harris any day, bias aside.

Why?

In the words of the almighty Trey Burke, we swept State. Not to mention that Stauskas had some of his biggest games against State, home and away.

And I mean he does play pretty solid defense. I wouldn't dare look at THJ's offensive numbers alone and think he deserved any of the hype he got or a 1st round pick. But he helps his team in other ways and he was asked to do certain things that maybe he wouldn't normally have to do.

Harris is a solid player. Sure he chucks...but who else on that team besides Payne do you trust shooting the ball?

Now look at Stauskas. Who else? LeVert. Okay...beside LeVert. Walton. Okay, he doesn't count. Albrecht. Anyone else? At least one of GRIII/Irvin.

MSU has at least 3 guys that actually get good minutes that when they shoot everyone on the team has to be like "NOOOOOOO!" or "BLOCK OUT!"

I wouldn't say MSU hoops is going away anytime soon. If they get Gill-Ceaser then they are adding a top 25 kid for 2014.

Davis from Muskegon seems highly regarded as well. Hate to say it but anyone expecting Izzo and his program to go away are out of their minds and really need to take their blinders off.

I actually think his defense has been outstanding this season. He has been missing way too many open shots though. Not to mention collapsing at the free throw line in big moments. I still think he goes pro. Izzo better hope he stays because they don't have any other scorers coming back.
