Unofficial visits too expensive for many families

Submitted by FL_Steve on

This is a topic I have witnessed as becoming more pronounced with today's recruits. The greatest recruitment emphasis is placed in areas where top prospects are spawned and plentiful. These areas include FL, Texas, and California. As Michigan has continued to strengthen its recruitment in these areas, and as the economy has dipped and fuel costs have increased, recruits from these areas have fewer opportunities to visit distant schools, outside of their official visits. I feel this limits our ability to gain the commitments of many out-of-state prospects. This leads me to my question.

Is it possible, or rather legal, for fans or people outside of a university to donate money to fund unofficial visits for recruits who cannot foot the bill?

Also, these issues raise another question, is the SEC as strong as it is b/c of its location and the recruits available? Do the monetary limitations which hinder many of them from visiting and building conformability with northern/distant schools, create an unfair advantage for the SEC as a geographical monopoly?

believe that anyone that gives money to the university is considered a booster, no matter what. So it would be a pretty big violation to set up a fund.

I think it would be a good idea to increase the number of official visits you can take to one school to 2 or 3 instead of the 1. It would help with all the southern and western recruits that would have a hard time paying for it.

I also believe  that SEC does have an advantage in recruiting, but the same can be said about recruits from around here. We've heard of recruits being here for every game and been around the school year round. It just happens that alot of recruits are in Florida or Texas. Its unfair, but those schools aren't doing anything wrong by letting recruits come on unofficials.

It's one of the reasons the Big Ten Coaches are trying to move the dates for Official visits up, so they can get kids on campus earlier and not lose out to southern schools that are closer to the kids homes.

We are already on the hot seat and every writer and fan in this country seems to have it out for us right now so not a good idea. Next thing to come out will be Rich Rod sunk that South Korean ship with his Uboat on a recruiting trip and he also caused the oil spill in the Gulf....

...GO TO MEETING (just rename it GOTOBBQ for this weekends event). A kid can relax at his computer (assuming he has one) and virtually be at the school.

It must be so nice to be a team in the SEC because you got so much talent in your own backyard. While teams like Michigan have to try hard to land these players they can just send one offer and they will commit then.
