In times where their football team is good, just take it to mean their academics.

I will carry that moto myself lol

Their academics aren't very highly thought of, but are actually pretty decent. Not on Michigan's level, but certainly much higher than MSU. If anything, they're underrated, accounting for the level of perception around here.

I thought that too, until I started meeting OSU grads. Now I hate the school even more. Fuck Ohio.

Is it bad I found out here before I checked my email?

I set up Wolverine Devotee's mgoblog twitter feed thing, only to find out I had read 80% of the posts before twitter notified me that they were posted. I keep telling my wife this is a good addiction - just think of the alternative addictions a husband can have ...

Back in my day, I walked to classes through 6 feet of snow, tornadoes, and 500 yards of shit smelling foulness you wouldn't imagine. Got damned kids these days.

North 'til you smell it, West 'til you step in it.
Actually I have been to Ann Arbor a number of times for gymnastics meets my older son took part in. It is very lovely. We usually visits the museums on campus waiting for the afternoon session of his meet to start.

I'll take it. Time to continue drinking.

'82 winter we had 16 inches of snow on top of a foot that was on the ground. Yep and we still had classes!
February 1st, 2015 at 10:32 PM ^
There was already a lot of snow on the ground and in Ann Arbor we got 15 to 16", Detroit got 12" and it was more of a blizzard. UM did not cancel school that day. I had to walk 2 miles to school since I could not get my car out of a drift in my apartment parking lot!

When I was in the MMB, I got back to A2 from the Capital One Bowl at like 2AM on January 3rd, a Monday, to find my car buried in a foot of snow. We had to wait another hour to unload the equipment truck at Revelli, then I got in my car to slide a mile uphill on Division, at which point my car got stuck in the snow twice trying to find a parking space in my neighborhood. The same Jimmy John's driver helped me get loose both times. Didn't find a space I could get into until about 4, got to bed by 5, had to be in class at 9. And the foot of snow was still on the ground when I had to walk there.
Sometimes you wonder why humans live in this part of the world.

We got 1 day off last year (my Sr year) and it was supposedly the first time they did that in 36 years. Now we do it twice in 2 years? Wow.

in January of '78. The entire state was shutdown! Until 2014 that was the only time UM cancelled classes.

Those of us who went to Michigan in the mid-late 90s had the fortune of some mild winters that saw only intermittent spurts of actual winter-like behavior from the atmosphere, but even when we had that 20 or so inches right after New Year's in 1998 that backed up flights for days, I don't think they budged for that except in that they allowed students who did have to travel back to Ann Arbor to miss the first classes of the semester with no repercussions.

It is kind of ironic that they did not cancel classes because that was basically the same snow amount that they cancelled classes for in 1978.

Cafeteria trays were VERY hard to come by at Markley...and come spring, they were all found, in pieces, at the bottom of the hill in the Arb. Hundreds of 'em. Traying in the Arb...those were the days!

From '09-'13 the university never officially cancelled classes campus-wide, but individual professors were able to cancel their own. The myth about the law students suing over cancelled classes costing them money because of less credit hours was never true. There was just a long precedent that the university would not cancel classes campuswide because it was a "resident" campus until just recently.

In my day...
Aw, fuck it. Enjoy the day off, you guys! Of course, my university simultaneously sent me a text, an email, called me, and called my mom to tell me school was still open tomorrow. I don't have to be there anyway (being a grad student can be kinda rad sometimes), but really. We have over a foot of snow on the ground. It's still falling. The trains are crawling. WTF.
February 2nd, 2015 at 12:23 AM ^
YOU"VE GOT TO BE FUCKING SHITTING ME.
School was never closed once in my day. I dragged my butt to class in deeper snow than what A2 is getting right now.
