UniformZ coming to an end for Michigan

Submitted by dahblue on

Well, Dave Brandon might not want to admit a mistake, but Brady Hoke will:

http://www.freep.com/article/20130812/SPORTS06/308120084

He even says that they wore one uniform that they'll never wear again.  Was that the Victors/Valiant Bumblebee?  The USFL edition for the Alabama game?  We may never know, but Hoke says he leans more toward Penn State's uniforms.  Restoring Michigan football and uniforms.  Hard not to love the guy.

Jerseys must have clearly visible, permanent Arabic numerals measuring at least 8 and 10 inches in height front and back, respectively, and be of one solid color that itself is clearly in distinct contrast with the color of the jersey, irrespective of any border around the number.” This rule goes into effect for Football Bowl Subdivision teams in 2013. Football Championship Subdivision, Division II and Division III teams will have until 2014 before the rule becomes effective.

I seem to remember not being able to see the jersey numbers during some game last year. Was it the bowl game?

The more Hoke talks the more I appreciate his approach. As a 45 year old fan born and raised in Ann Arbor I think I am too old to really embrace alternate uniforms as a regular thing. I love Oregon's crazy ass stuff and some of the other schools, but only because I don't give a shit about their "regular" uniforms.

But Michigan's classic home uniforms are deeply embedded in whatever part of my lizard brain controls emotions and I get a very bad vibe when I see them in those uniformz. Plus some of them were just so bad it's hard to believe adults were involved in their production. I'm okay with special bowl game uniforms and whatnot if the players are super geeked for them, but I'm glad they're going to tone it down this year.

Go Hoke and Go Blue.

I didn't have a problem with the Alabama game jersey.  Our away jerseys need to be updated in my opinion.  The home jersey should never be touched.

Count me among the people happy to see the end of it, for the most part. I like Michigan to look like Michigan, and the bowl game last year and the trash tornado unis didn't look like it to me

Also looking at all your media day pictures, it seems you're using a normal jersey template/cut instead of Three Stripe's horrible stretchy Tech-Fit tire tread jerseys like the other Adiddas teams. Props to that.

I just wanna see blue pants on the road once in my life. Nothing fancy, no funny stripes or whatever. Just blue pants.

In other uniform news, Clemson needs to start wearing purple again. It's been a couple years now I believe. Plenty of orange and white teams out there already.

He said they wanted to scale back the Alt jerseys but, nothing about doing away with them. The article goes as far to say there is only 1 of the alt jerseys we saw in the last 2 years that we'll never see again. you seem to have picked the parts of the articles that kind of support your theory and totally ignore when Hoke says people are over reacting to Uniform changes.

The bumblebee's where disgusting and  the UTL jerseys wheren't much better but the other changes ( Bama and SC games) wheren't bad at all. The matte finish on the helmets was bad ass. The helmet has gone through a lot of subtle changes over the year. The colors have changes, the wings have changed, they added number, they added helmet stickers, they changed the helmet stickers and then removed the helmet sticker/ numbers.

They say the only constant is change but, they also say you can't please all the people all the time. Until the alt jerseys rot on store shelves in Ann Arbor don't exspect them to go anywhere. Sorry just don't want you to your hopes and the hopes of others up.

It would be interesting to know what the players think, and what recruits think.  Since extracirricular activities are supposed to be "all about the student body," it would be nice to know what current students think, too.

I think the best we can hope for is for recruits to not care one way or another, while players and other students agree with the traditionalists.

ANYTHING is possible. I fully expect uniformZ with adZ on them here as soon as they're allowed. Chrome helmets and all that bullshit too.

Less is more.  Nobody wants the homes messed with - why mess with the away?  For the away, take the home jersey, and replace the blue with white, the maize numbers with blue.  No piping, no maize trim on the blue numbers - a strict inversion of the home.  Any under garments also stark white.  Very clean look that would look very sharp.  Makes the helmut stand out a little more.  All the uniformz scream "trying too hard to be cute" and they fail.

The MSU bumblebee jerseys were pretty bad, but I still liked the white pants.  I hope we give them a shot as part of our road ensemble in the future.

I am with everyone.  Just leave the uniforms alone!  I hated the uniform and the matte helmets from the outback bowl.  The bumblebees and the alabama game jerseys were horrible.  I loved the sugar bowl jerseys and wish they would have became our away uniform from now on.  But I will say that I loved the UTL uniforms.  Am I the only one?  I remember after the game in the parking lot I said "I have to get me one of those jerseys" and i bought one the next day.  I think I like it because of the 'M' on the front.  Reminds me of a hockey jersey.  That being said, please dont wear them again.  This is Michigan fergodsakes!

Of the alternate jerseys:

UTL: Only like them for sentimental reasons.

Bumblebee away jerseys: Hell no, for sentimental reasons as it reminds me of the attempted decapitation of Denard.

Sugar Bowl: I love these. Take out the sugar bowl logo and it is a pretty clean looking away jersey. I am still looking for an authentic jersey I could buy. The replicas look cheap.

Bama Game: Ok, but switch the maize pants with blue and now we are talking.

Outback: I like these. Along with the sugar bowl jersey, it is the one alternate jersey I am always attempted to buy at MDen. However, either have blue numbers or outline the numbers with blue. I was at the game and it was hard to read the numbers.

Sounds good to me, if the players want to do an alternate for the bowl game I think that's great but no more of this nonsense.  I just graduated last December and I'm already kicking people off my lawn!

The 2011 uniforms for MSU are definitely the worst ones ever.  The mid-90's vintage dark blue home jerseys are easily my favorites.  I'm ok with some experimentation on the road jerseys but the home uniform should always be the dark blue without any flair.  I actually kind of liked the matte finish on the helmets last year but the helmets should be otherwise left alone...  no numbers, snarling wolverines or mini-football decals.
