I'm sure this will be poorly received by the "don't crush his dreams" crowd - and I will preface it again by saying we are ALL rooting for Austin to play meaningful basketball at.  We are proud of how he's emerged from tragedy, and fortunate to have the opportunity share his story and cheer for him at UofM.  I hope he accomplishes every goal he has for himself.

That said, I just want to comment on the facts, because this is the first film I've seen of Austin since he's injury (not counting the 3-pointer in HS which didn't tell us much).  He's noticabably slower each of his teammates, and seems to still be working on his coordination.  It's already impressive that he's been able to regain this level of athleticism after his injuries.  And while I'm still rooting for him (see paragraph #1), this does help reinforce my hunch that he's headed towards a medical redshirt.

If he wants to play all four years and Beliein wants him to dress for every game, I'm 100% on board.  This is my opinion, based on what my eyes were able to preceive.  Only time will tell.

After what he's been through, he'll probably never play a meaningful minute, and that's just fine. What he'll give us is inspiration, and the knowledge that Beilein is an even better person than he is a coach for keeping him on scholarship.

We'll have other guys who can play. Hatch will always be a great Michigan story, and we need all the great Michigan stories we can get.

second that.  hope this cat continues to surprise his doctors with his recovery and hope he enjoys every minute of his college experience, im def rooting for him.  his tragic story / subsequent actions amaze me and i guarantee inspire those around him on daily basis.

id be shocked if hes not granted hardship waiver - though beilein has demonstrated hes aces in all regards and would continue winning even if placed at somewhat competitive disadvantage via scholly #s.

hatch and dakich could be devastating 1-2 combo on the bench

I hope he gets to play meaningful time at Michigan, but if he doesn't, he has still come back much further than most people would have.  It's obvious that Austin Hatch isn't "most people."

The day that Dr Austin Hatch graduates from the University of Michigan Medical School will be one of the biggest and best days in the history of the program.

He has a long way to go before he sees meaningful minutes, but he's already come a long ways, so I definitely wouldn't count him out. He's clearly putting time in the weight room - that dude is huge!

Not saying Hatch will regain the form needed to be a significant contributor on the court, but he's got 4-5 years ahead of him with the MBB program. A lot can happen between now and then. If he continues to progress in his recovery faster than most have expected, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of him getting minutes as an upperclassman.

More importantly though, after going through the tragic events in which Austin survived, yet lost his family, makes being part of the basketball program at Michigan HUGELY helpful for him, I'd imagine. His teammates and the coaching staff are likely the closest thing he has to family now. And with a high integrity guy like John Beilein as HC, there's probably not another school in the country that could provide a better atmosphere to help a young, student-athlete like Austin cope with the extremely unfortunate circumstances he has been dealt.

concerned by the front court defense. It will help immensely if Walton, Caris and Irvin can provide some perimeter defense. They could be the best defensive trio in several years.

looks like they use their practice time efficiently. it'd be fun to see what other school's practices look like to compare. or even amaker's from his time here.

I have a buddy who was part of a Pac-12 staff for a few years, then he decided to try and network by spending a year traveling around the country visiting college basketball practices.

He also said that practice is very cerebral. Fewer reps, more thinking and understanding what's going on and what they're trying to accomplish. He also said they have their own terminology for basketball actions and areas of the floor. That's a little inside look from someone who has spent time at over 100 different colleges around the country looking at practices. As you can imagine, he said practices are very organized, and that Stauskas made it rain (shocking, I know). He said he personally saw Stauskas hit 47/50. It was fun to pick his brain about Michigan and other programs.

I just hope we don't have to shoot at any baskets with lids on them during the season.  I wouldn't be surprised if they tried that shit at Assembly Hall.
