Over on TTB UMBIG11 created a post about spring football updates. So, I figured I would let you all know to head on over and get your spring football update!\

Less excited about the QB trouble but that should get better.
I took the QB trouble as being because the D is good (especially the DL) and the OL is uhhhhhh... not so good.
Yes, I think this is the case. Also, the defense is usually ahead of the offense at this point in the team's development.
will be just fine. Have to remember it's early Spring and we are looking for 3 new starters and a lot of experimenting is going on right now. Expect them to find the best 5 and get them working together in the fall and they will be just fine. Plenty of talent up there and good coaching not to get it right this year.
What does it say about Peters if he can't beat out O'Korn?
O'Korn was not very impressive at all last year.
Maybe it's too early idk.
Peters is in the second half of his freshman year in college.
Also, for as bad as O'Korn looked against Indiana, he looked pretty darn good in a backup role for the rest of the season, and he has played well earlier in his career at Houston. Not only are you expecting too much from Peters (IMO), but I think you're underestimating O'Korn, too.
It might be honest, but that doesn't mean it's wholly accurate. I don't disagree that he mostly played in garbage time - which is the case for most backup QBs. But aside from the Indiana game, he was 13/18 for 114 yards, 2 TDs, and 0 INTs. I know the Indiana game can't be ignored entirely, but it's possible that he just happened to pick a bad time for a bad day.
Regardless, Michigan's #2 quarterback is more experienced and more capable than the vast majority of college teams' #2 quarterbacks.
"Regardless, Michigan's #2 quarterback is more experienced and more capable than the vast majority of college teams' #2 quarterbacks."
Nobody's claiming he's a Heisman contender or that he should beat out Speight. He's the #2 QB.
At this point last season, nearly everyone thought O'Korn was going to be the starter in the fall. So I wouldn't read a whole lot into the fact that Peters is either 2B or 3rd in line at QB. Long way to go, and like Magnus said O'Korn is no slouch at QB.
50/50 for Newsome to return by fall seems awfully optimistic, but would be great if true
I'm not sure I would want to see the field again after something like Newsome went through. But he is clearly a motivated, dedicated and determined man. Good for him. Stories like his are what makes being Blue so worthwhile.
That's true - he walked off the field with barely a limp. It didn't look that bad when he was walking off. Then they showed the reply, and Napoleum McCallum popped into my head... It wasn't that bad, but it was the same type of injury.
Interesting that he reported Newsome was on crutches. Josh Henschke on Scout reported today that he saw Newsome walking around Schembechler during player avaliability yesterday WITHOUT any assitance. Someone also chimed in on the same thread that he saw Newsome at Meijer a few months back and that Newsome was without crutches then as well. TIFWIW.
I don't believe this to be true, and in fact Webb reported the opposite. What caused him the long hospital stay was an infection. The injury itself actually spared damage to all the major arteries but the nature of it required several surgeries, hence why he was in the wheelchair so long. It was mostly for recovery purposes. He didn't almost lose his leg, and I wouldn't be spreading that rumor if I were you.
"Almost lost his leg" isn't really hyperbole. There was blood vessel damage. Won't burn my source, but they work at U of M Hospital.
HIPAA, lol
I have also heard this through other channels. Newsome's injury was very bad, probably one of the worst injuries to occur to a Michigan player in the last 20 years or so.
that sounds unlikely even if he had a "regular" knee injury, much less this kind
It's possible that he has recovered to the point where he can take breaks from the crutches, but that over the course of the day he will need them from time to time. Those of us who have had major leg injuries can probably relate.
I'm skeptical about the Meijer report, though.
I played against Newsome on Counterstrike and he was without crutches then
I remember seeing this late last season on the board and I think it had to do something with Speight being hurt, can anyone give me the brief backstory of how this originated? Sorry.
A while back one of us was on counterstrike, and another player in the game said that a certain recruit was going to commit to Michigan. That never ended up happening, so the joke now is that the counterstrike guy has all the inside info.
claimed to have played counterstrike with a classmate/friend(?) of a recruit, I think it was Mike Weber, who said he was a lock to commit to Michigan, and an mgoblog meme was born.
I'm fairly certain it was Jordan Fuller.
Not Najee?
Nah, G.
True - the rumor was that Counterstrike Guy said Fuller was a lock.
This made me LOL
my uncle used to work at Meijer a long time ago and said how nice Fred was to all his employees, from entry level on up.
I worked at Meijer for two years after high school (AA-Saline rd FWIW) and still shop there whenever I'm back in town. Of course, my mother lives almost across the street from it, so it's easy to get to. But I still like the place.
That's partly why I am skeptical that Newsome could have been walking around unaided "months" ago. That's a lot of walking.
I had major leg surgery and was ordered to use crutches for 13 weeks after surgery. When week 14 came along I still rarely used them (even though I wanted to bend them into a ball). The rare times I still used them was when I shopped at large dept. stores or the mall. Just for the next couple weeks or so.
Yeah, so IMO the Meijer report was probably a case of mistaken identity. I'm not sure how many ten foot tall guys there are running around out there but that's what I'm thinkin.
I'll take the under.
But this is why I wanted to fight everyone who'd say he'd never play again. For multiple reasons, the main one being...why are you doubting someone's drive, work ethic, and our Michigan medical staff? If they can make a man with a 1% chance, walk again...they may be able figure out a career threatening injury.
Based of what I've gathered, IMO, he's a redshirt this year and he'll play next year.
OR
He'll redshirt this year then burn that redshirt in November and we'll all lose our fucking minds while he takes a couple of snaps for no reason.
...he's not going to be ready by the start of the season. From what I gather, that's when he'll start working on the field. Give him a full fall of rehab and light practice, winter conditioning, limited spring camp, summer workouts, full go 2018 fall camp and he just may be a starter or contributor on your 2018 OL.
Edit: Think about this too...if he was never going to play again, if there was no chance. Why wouldn't we announce it? You can call him a student coach or something if he REALLY wants to come to practice every day...but we'd all know.
Don't doubt this potential minor miracle. Instead, be hopeful this kid regains his short-term and long-term health and is able to live his dream of playing football again.
There's also "returns" and "returns to the starting lineup." Which are two pretty different things.
I can't get over how much I love the term "frisbee catching dog" in reference to DPJ. I can't wait to watch this kid ball out for the next 3 years.
