UM Women Hoopsters Beat #13 Maryland 71-65

Submitted by Indy Pete - Go Blue on

They are back on the saddle with a huge home win against Maryland!  This should be the clincher for a tourney bid.  Nice win and go blue!

Edit: First win ever over Maryland in UM Womens program history!  (Thanks Ty and k.o.k.)

I think that’s the first time they’ve beaten Maryland since the new B1G. Could be wrong about that.

Edit: just read the replies above, apparently I sold the accomplishment short.

Congratulations to the ladies.

It was not pessimism when they had lost 4 of the last 5.  Without this win, they would have been out.  With an RPI of 47 before tonight this is not entirely set.  Let's hope that they get 1 or 2 wins in the BIG tournament so they get a decent seed.

Great finish to the regular season. Nicole Munger came up huge in the last minute. Four players in double figures, including Akienreh Johnson, who is doing a nice job picking up for injured freshman Hailey Brown.

I'm glad Katelynn Flaherty and Jillian Dunston finished their home careers with a marquee win*. First ever over Maryland?

* - this assumes they're in the NCAA tournament, which I think this victory clinches.

This win almost certainly clinches an NCAA bid for them. All the Big Ten tourney might change is their NCAA seed. They're probably looking at an 8 or 9 seed right now. 10 seed would actually be better because facing a 1 seed in the WBB tourney is pretty much a sure L.

What a time to be a Michigan fan! Mens basketball is getting hot at the right time, Hockey is getting back to its usual self under Mel, and Women's basketball looks like a tourney lock. Go Blue!

maryland is super-talented.  they're quick, they're big, they play tough defense.  kaila charles is scary good.  i can see them making a final four run in the near future, if not this year.  but we're just really good...we got up early, stretched it to 12 around the middle of the 2nd quarter, but they closed before half and i don't think it ever got beyond six in the second half.  couldn't put them away, but we also counterpunched every single time we got hit.

just a tough, tight win.  gritty.

i frankly thought we were already in the tournament, but this should seal it barring a first-round blowout (and the sparty loss in east lansing is our only loss to a mediocre team).
