UM Solar - WSC - Day 5
Congratulations to Nuna7 - Team Nuon. They are your World Solar Challenge Champs for 2013.
The top 4 remained static with Tokai Challenger (Tokai University), RED (Team Twente) and Luminos (Stanford) following Nuna7 over the Finish Line (End of Timing). Tokai gave RED and Luminos a little bit of false hope when they had to stop to charge their batteries, on course. As you can see from the picture above, it was a cloudy and rainiy day. Tokai miscalculated, obviously.
UM Solar spent the night repairing the damage caused by that cross wind gust.
After overnight repairs, Generation got back on the road. Here, they check out the repairs by doing some figure 8s in the parking lot.
After some tentiative running, they felt comfortable enough to manage 70 kph. They remain in 9th with the possibility of catching 8th (they're about 50 minutes back).
They have about an hour and fifteen minute lead on 10th. All things considered; that's very impressive. They still have more than 500 km to get to the finish. They have plenty of oppotunity to make up ground.

You're welcome. It is a very cool event (as is the American Solar Challenge). I was hoping to report better results, for the UM Solar team, but sometimes, things don't go your way. =)

I know they did not do as well against the competiton as previous WSC's, but how do they compare to themselves in previous WSC's? Assuming the course is the same, have their times been better or worse than previous WSC's?
I know it's a different design, so it may be apples to oranges.

The rule changes for the Challenger class meant the entire field was much slower this year. The cruising speeds of the top cars are down about 10mph from 2 years ago.
It was all about how you mitigate the inevitable drop it performance. Other teams managed that better.

University of Minnesota is particpating in the Cruiser Class (which is designed to hold more than just the driver). How about this; Mississippi Choctaw High School is participating in the Adventure class (which is for older WSC Cars).
Right on!
I would say that their car looks better than you know who........
"Tushka Hashi" means Sun Warrior in Choctaw. These guys have just become my Slippery Rock.

Best part about that photo that I just noticed - apparently MSU Solar Car doesn't even rate their name on the State Racing trailer, even though Concrete Canoe does. Ouch.

That it looks just like a beer pong table makes it all the more Sparty.
