UM on Mike & Mike this morning

Submitted by Waves on

Gary Anderson was on M&M this morning, and afterwards the talk got around to the Michigan coaching hire.

Greeny brought up the topic of which is the better coaching position--UM or Wiscy. He had some stats comparing the two schools and the number of NFL players in the draft and on the field and it was markedly not in our favor. CC's take was that even the perfect hire wasn't going to turn things around quickly since UM just doesn't have the bodies.

Although I wasn't expecting a fair shake with three OSU, ND, and NW honks in the group, I couldn't argue with their findings completely. That being said, they agreed that UM was still a prestigious program with a ton of cash and the ability to hire top-shelf coaching talent.

EDIT: Let me clarify that I couldn't argue with Greeny's stats about the number of players in the NFL. I certainly don't agree with their overall negative take on UM.

According to CC on the show, he kept saying Michigan is really small compared to Ohio State and the talent level is nowhere close Ohio's status. Oh and Wisconsin is more of an elite job than Michigan.

Based on Korn Ferry's Wikipedia page, they are the world's largest executive search firm.

An interested thing to note is, Jed Hughes, who leads Korn Ferry's sports sector, is a University of Michigan alumnus and was an assistant coach under Bo from 1974-75. He found Dave Brandon and Brady Hoke for Michigan (oh god).

From Korn Ferry's sports sector page:

"Having pioneered senior level search and organizational assessment in the world of sports, Jed Hughes leads Korn Ferry’s Sports practice as vice chair. His high profile placements include New York Jets GM John Idzik and President Neil Glat; Mark Murphy, CEO of the Green Bay Packers; Larry Scott, Commissioner of the Pac-12; Bob Bowlsby, Commissioner of the Big 12; Dave Brandon and Brady Hoke, the athletic director and the head coach, respectively, of the Michigan Wolverines; USC head basketball coach Andy Enfield; and Chris McGowan, president and CEO of the Portland Trail Blazers. Jed has conducted searches for the USOC, LPGA, PGA of America, Seattle Seahawks, Arsenal Football Club, Liverpool Football Club, Ohio State, ATP Tour, and WTA, among others.

Early in his career, Jed served for more than 20 years as a coach in pro and college football under five Hall of Fame coaches: Chuck Noll (Pittsburgh Steelers), Bud Grant (Minnesota Vikings), Bo Schembechler (Michigan), John Ralston (Stanford), and Terry Donahue (UCLA). Jed holds a PhD from the University of Michigan and also ran a company that provided psychological evaluations of business leaders —experiences that laid the foundation for his unparalleled understanding of leadership issues in sports organizations."

Korn Perry might want to update their website to remove the bits about Brandon and Hoke.

The majority of sports reporters and sports radio hosts are idiots. Angelique, Wojo, and Chantel Jennings are the only good ones I can think of off the top of my head.

I would disagree that we dont have the bodies.  I think this team is pretty loaded with talent and experience right now and should be able to win right away depending on the system and the QB development.

You would all be reacting differently to this thread if it had been entitled "highly experienced coach at NFL factory St. Thomas Aquinas High of Florida heavily recommends Wisconsin over Michigan to its high level recruits."

That it is Chris Carter who is the source of that doesn't make it any better or less concerning, in my view.  In fact, to me it makes it worse - I actually believe he knows what he's talking about.

Michigan is easy troll because: 1) they have beaten everyone for a long time and plenty of media go to schools that have been beaten by UM, 2) numerous alumni and fans spread across the country who will react to trolling and 3) we are a pompous crowd at times, tbh

especially #1. It's funny that all of the ESPN osu alum hires are bigger homers the more we kicked their ass. Outside of Herbie (a very good closet buck homer that can appear fairly objective) the ones that are most vocal in hating UM are the ones that got the shit kicked out of them by Michigan while playing at osu. The UM guys are reversed in that they played for UM when they were still UM. They at least went 2/3 for 4 against osu. They don't have that animosity of, say, a Robert Smith. The dude is so smug about osu at a time after he played there lol.

I can't understand why Robert Smith doesn't hold a little animosity toward OSU.  I'm too lazy to link, but seems like he left OSU early after complaing that he was expected to practice football more that go to class.  The pre-internet reaction from Buckeyeland couldn't have been kind to Smith.

Honestly, how many kids choose their school based on NFL potential though? I'm guessing no more than the number that choose based on "tradition". They probably consider things like chances of winning a championship, relationship with the coach, style of play and quality of education before they consider the number of NFL players that have come out of a program.

Personally, I think most of Michigan's defensive starters in 2015 will have a good shot at the NFL at some point, and a number of Michigan's offensive players will, too (though not as many). I think Hoke did a great job of recruiting talent - guys with size, speed, etc. Obviously, there are some deficiencies at key positions (QB, WR) and some youth (OL), but the raw talent is there for a lot of these guys to play at the next level.

"The longer the #Michigan job stays open the better. Makes me think they have something huge up their sleeve." - Mike Greenberg I bet you all will accept his "national" opinion now lol

I have never listened to this show and doesnt sound like I miss much.

That said over the past 8 years or so they have a point on NFL production.  When I did some pieces on LSU I was struck on their volume to the NFL - something like more guys drafted in rounds 1-5 in 3 years than UM has had in 8.  Wiscy has been sending RBs and OL at a pretty frantic pace and even some nice D players.   We have been lacking the past 2 coaches if for lack of development (Hoke) or system (RR's smaller players on offense, and "de-emphasizing" defense) so I dont have an issue on that front.

In terms of potential on the roster I am in the camp let's see.  Wiscy recruits to a system and that system is estabished.  We recruit far higher starz but need a coach to coach them up - no one knows what we have in terms of true NFL quality outside of a few names I could see headed there ala Henry and Lewis.  (Peppers who knows, he has played 1.5 games)

Along the Lakeshore we only have one other sports radio station. So I do listen to Mike and Mike on my way to work since they're usually funny and at least somewhat entertaining. It's not really a hardcore sports show format, and that's okay with me. I don't have to look to them for focused sports conversation. So it's either that or listen to the MSU/ND homers on the other station.

I wonder what it would take to actually temper our fanbase's arrogance.  Complete irrelevance in football hasn't made much of a dent.

Apparently top 10 recruiting classes are conclusive as to the fantastic talent on our roster.  In the face of being horrible on the field, how could anyone even consider anything to the contrary.  How stupid these ESPN guys are.

As to Wisconsin, they have a better record than us over a 20 year period, over the past 10 years, its not even close.

I agree Michigan isn't going to return to its top position quickly with a new hire, but I suspect this year will have a decent number of draft picks, and then in the coming years there should be a good number.  The one thing Hoke did do well was recruit kids, and while they haven't all blossomed I do think that a different coaching staff should be able to maximize what he does have.

I really don't know how talented this team is. I really don't see much team speed. Corners seems to be lackluster excluding Peppers. Safeties are meh, WRs are meh, Jake Butt is talented, oline is meh, QBs are meh, RB are slightly better than meh, Dline and LBs are the only spots I look at say oh yeah we have talent. Just because the whole team is 4 and 5 stars doesn't mean the team is talented. You guys need to quit obsessing over recruiting rankings.
