Point of interest about this game (which you probably already realize if you follow UM hockey at all):  coach Red Berenson is shooting for his 700th career victory

4-3 Michigan on an even strength Mercyhurst goal at 9:25 of the 3rd thanks to a turnover.  Looks like Red's 700th is no sure thing tonight...

And Mercyhurst wins in a shootout. Don't know how that happened. We looked like a national contender the first period and a half. Then we looked awful. Disappointing start to the season. Luckily, it's a long season in which we'll have time to figure things out.

Maybe we should have done what they did and switched to Hogan at halfway through the game. I didn't think so because Hunwick had a shutout going, and he was playing really well. But switching him later would make him think we lost faith in him (switching at half seems like a planned strategy not a fault-based reason), and he wasn't really at fault for most of those goals. I just wonder if Hogan would have had one or more of them, or more luck in the shootout.

Either way, what the hell was that? Observations:

No Hagelin coincides with sudden suckitude

Defensive zone turnovers

Shit penalties (and a few bull shit penalties)

Can't shoot

Can't clear the zone

Stickhandling in our own zone? what?

Shootout plan was basically take a shot at the slot and don't make a move. Didn't work the first time, and didn't work the other 3 times we tried it (without our best shooter on the ice that is).

There's not much else on the board about this cause people are obviously at the game. My biggest observation is the stupidity of me, not the team: I didn't realize how late our football game ended and forgot to leave immediately for Yost. I missed our first game. Loss or not, I was ready to dunk my head in a toilet after the final buzzer for missing it.

One after we regained possesion in our own zone, the pass up the boards hit the ref and bounced to two Mercyhurst players in front of the net.  And before that, one after there was a no-call on a trip done to Moffie who was trying to hold the puck in the offensive zone, which resulted in a mini-break they capitilized on.

We had quite a few good chances that we just didn't finish.  Defensive zone play was meh.  There were a lot of good individual defensive play (by forwards and defensemen), but not great team defense.  Coaching will help with that, obviously.  Merill looked REALLY good ,I thought.  He is definitely as-advertised.  Bennett was kind of meh.  Moffatt did OK, had one absolutely golden opportunity that he shot wide.  Our forwards were flying around like you'd expect, lots of good hits.  Pateryn and Langlais played well, I was dissappointed with Burlon's play.  Lynch didn't look all that great either.  Hunwick played decent, made a few good saves, but not a ton were spectacular.  He wasn't precisely at fault on any of the goals, but he probably could/should have stopped at least 1 or 2 of them.

I don't expect this team to ever win a shoot-out ever.  Which is ridiculous since we have all those high-powered forwards, but I just have no faith in our forwards to put it in or our goalies to stop the other guys on a penalty shot.  I thought the same last year.  Hopefully we just crush most of our opponents and don't have to worry about them too much.

This is obviously a bit of a crushing tie, but I think the team will be fine in the long run.  Red will coach them up a little bit, they'll start rolling and won't look back.
