UM (hockey) loses to Union 4-3

Tough to watch. Outshot dramatically. Not sure where the offense is going to come from. :(

I don't know what winning one more recently than us has to do with judging whether we are a good team this year. The 2013-2014 is pretty far removed at this point and they went 13-14-9 last season. Maybe they're great and we're still good but it seems like the justifying that people used to do with the football program.

You are misreading. I am not justifying anything--I was answering a post asking "who/what is Union" by pointing out a rather notable accomplishment of recent vintage. I actually think Union could be decent this season and challenge for a tourney spot. That does not mean that Michigan is somehow a secretly good team that has hit a buzzsaw. In fact, I am very pessimistic about the team this year based on who is on the team (I've said as much elsewhere on Mgoblog) and I think even a .500 record will be a challenge. I am not in any way suggesting that this game is not a bad sign, because I think it is.

I really wish he could've gone out with one more title. Single elimination hockey is insane, so it's been forever. At least last year was a somewhat good season, not a bad time to retire. This year though will not only be unfortunate for Red, but it may be quite difficult to get Mel back if the team is doing terribly

I really think Red knew that the talent was not going to be there this year with everyone telling him they were leaving so he did not want whatever new coach to get blamed for it right out of the gate.  Obviously could be wrong, but I want to give him the benefit of the doubt after everything hes done.

Union was a tough draw to start the season with. They pretty much brought back their entire team, Michigan was replacing most of their team.

Union is a great forechecking team and once they get their cycle going they are really tough to beat. The Dutchmen are a tournament team.

Maybe so. I think the team will improve with a younger, fresh coach. But Red has earned the right to decide when to retire. I may think he's holding on too long, but I wouldn't even be a significant Michigan Hockey fan if he hadn't built the program into what it is now. So I'll grit my teeth and accept a rough season in return for the years of thrilling memories the program has given me.

This roster is... let's say, rebuilding. Hard to win with no matter who the coach is. Some have wondered if certain guys (Andrew Copp, Tyler Motte, etc) departing early was a sign that things aren't totally pleasant behind the locker room doors for whatever reason. The runaway success of the CCM line quieted the whispers for a while, and both Larkin and Connor were clearly good departure decisions, but one may wonder if the roster would hold together better under another coach. Maybe, maybe not. But the guys that are there, good hard working team guys that they may be, aren't in a position to replace the kind of performances we've seen in the last two years.

The penalties are a problem.  A lot of them and an ineffective PK.  There were a lot of penalties in the Windsor game too.

Cooper Marody ineligble for 1/2 season does not help either.

Remember when we were good at hockey? :( It's almost as if great coaches can't coach with the same energy once approaching 80.........

let's hope sparty doesn't open that small window to jump ahead of us here, like what happened in football when Carr stuck around

Yeah, MSU has basically given up on hockey for the time being. Michigan has the history, fan base, facilities, name recognition, location, and incentives to be a great program for a long time after Red retires. I suspect this will be a bad year. But one good hire and Michigan will be a power. MSU made a bad hire... and doubled down on him.
