UM Engineering develops "cloaking spray paint"

Submitted by Bronco648 on

SIAP, I did a search and did not find anything on this.

A cloaking paint developed by Michigan Engineers sprays on clear and dries invisible. Once dry, it guides light around an object, causing it to become transparent.

As nanotechnology blurs the line between science and science fiction, Christoph Ellison has developed a paint that guides rays of light around an object. Still in development, the distortions allow the outline of the object to be seen, preventing true invisibility.

Wow, just........wow.

Could explain Channing Stribling's "fade out" plays?  /s

Thought it was real for a second as well.  It's not like it's entirely implausible given the advancements from Quantum Stealth in cloaking technology.

You're probably talking about that.  If you read the actual article and not just the headline, you'll see that it only works on small objects and only with microwaves.

The headline is "a type of cloth can make objects invisible to light!" in reality, the light they are referring to is microwave radiation, which is a form of "light". But it isn't in the visible spectrum, so it's not invisible in the sense we typically think of.

Thank God it's a joke, this would have given the Romulans the advantage they need to compete with the big boys.

saw something a while back about how the military was experimenting with suits that would have thousands of cameras on the back and corresponding screens on the front. This would allow a person looking at the person in the suit to see whatever is directly behind them, essentially rendering the suit-wearer invisible. Seemed pretty cool but probably outrageously expensive...

Sadly, the first thing I thought of was the great April Fools jokes I could play with that, but I didn't realize it was a joke on me.

I am ashamed and a terrible representative of Michigan.

Everybody already knows that the gov worked with secret Nazi collaborators to discover "invisibility" back in 1948 with the notoriuos Philadephia experiment.

Although I suppose an invisibility paint would be an improvement over the razzle-dazzle paint jobs:

Someone posted this on Facebook a couple days ago.  I didn't watch/read it and just assumed it was a joke.  I saw it here, and decided to watch it and see what it was all about.  I actually did believe it was true and that I had just rushed to judgement to quickly on this the other day.  And then I saw the article that said it was indeed an April Fool's joke after all.  This roller coaster of emotions as now made me sad.
