Wow, very surprising that OSU isn't there. We really have to get him and Stanford on campus and make an impression.
Has he visited yet? or is there a plan for him to visit?
No, he hasn't. He's trying to get up here with Dwayne Stanford.
Admittedly, I don't know shit about recruiting, but if we're in his top 5 you'd think he would eventually visit us.
he better hurry there's only ~200 days left until signing day!!
He was supposed to make it at the end of June, but it fell through. Last I heard he and Stanford were trying to make it up by the end of July.
The BBQ at the Big House?
I could see both he and Washington making it up for the BBQ.
OSU Blog meltdown watch commencing now.
No meltdown, in the thread they have on Bucknuts about it they're saying "Once the sanctions come down and prove to be nothing he will come back, along with many others"
That's very optimistic and ignorant of them. I would expect nothing less.
I find it hilarious that the folks on Bucknuts cannot apparently conceive of a scenario in which the sanctions might be near-fatal. Is Denial truly the civic religion in Columbus now?
The article did say he's going to wait until after he finds out what OSU's sanctions will be. But, you have to think we're in the lead at this point.
I am a little skeptical about us leading at this point only because he hasn't actually been on campus yet. But it definitely is plausible. Does anyone know which schools he has visited so far?
Pretty sure he hasn't gone to any of his finalists yet. He said he wants to schedule the visits soon. I'm pretty sure they both talked about announcing at the AA game, so we still have a while for them.
Stanford mentioned he went to Kentucky the weekend he was supposed to visit us. UK is one of his finalists.
You could argue that him having Michigan so high despite not having visited yet makes us his likely leader in the long run (given how recruits have responded to visits this year).
says the Michigan staff xld a visit earlier this year? Anyone remember the details of that?
I think they schedule a trip over Memorial Day weekend (I guess without checking with the coaches). Then the coaches told them that that wouldn't make much sense cause no one would be there to welcome them (Washington and Stanford).
aren't even on our schedule! /s
Srsly though, if these two went blue together, it would fill two key remaining 2012 spots with top talent. It may even prompt decisions from a couple others.
Is it really possible that he *and* Wormley could commit? Someone's gotta be moving to the inside, right?
This could explain the "one more DT" thing. If we took Washington, Wormley, Pipkins, and O'Brien, I think that would be 12 guys for the defensive front seven. It would be an amazing haul, but that seems like a lot of guys for one class.
Strobel, Godin, and Washington could all play the 3-tech in the future. I'm more worried about the nose tackle than the 3-tech.
Any chance this portends a possible shift in defensive formation in coming years? Something akin to a 4-3 stack, where you don't need a true nose?
I doubt it. Mattison has been a 4-3 Under or 3-4 guy his entire career. He's too old to change now.
about that 'Bama' up there... Here's hoping Adolphus doesn't sell his soul to Saban.
One of these is not like the others.
It's not UK.
With that top 5, let's hope academics carry some weight.
Who was the recruit that said that the academic presentation blew him away when he visited? The name slipped my mind, but I remember that he had said we did a spectacular job of selling the education you receive at Michigan. This very well could work nicely in our favor.
I believe it was Caleb Stacey's parents who were "blown away" by the academics side of Michigan (http://mgoblog.com/diaries/tomvh-commit-caleb-stacey-visit-reaction) and Tom Strobel who was surprised by Michigan's "academic reputation" (http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/ohio-de-comments-michigans-academic-reputation).
In your defense, though, a lot of prospects and commitments have positive comments regarding Michigan's academics.
the poster is referring to Bars as he said the recruit said UM did a spectacular job (which Blake did) not that the parents were blown away.
I couldn't find anything on Blake's comments about our academics. A link would be appreciated.
On a side note, I've been reading this blog for a couple of years, but never have I been this interested (I'm scared to use the word 'obsessed') in our recruiting process. Hoke uber alles?
Hoke uber alles indeed!
I don't have a link, just going off memory. He said something along the lines of how impressed he was when they got to take in the academic side of UM on their visit and that he would like another chance to meet with the academic people there. To be perfectly honest, I can't say 100% percent that quote came from him, that is just what I remember (I would say I am 90% sure it was Bars).
I actually thought his father said that. I could be wrong but I'm almost positive a recruit's father said that.

Are you thinking about OL Steven Elmer (2013) ?

I havn't followed Washington to closely. Who is the biggest challenger for us out of those other 4.....I always fear talented recruits will drink the "Saban Kool-Aid".
I think he has always intended on visiting. I think we have always been in the conversation, but I doubt anyone is leading.
Shocked that OSU is not on the list...they must be destroying this kid over on Hineygate for being a traitor right about now.
I think he will visit, and visit means we have a chance. I LOVE this kid...he and Wormley makes our DL elite for the next few years.
I love how often we're seeing recruit's lists exclude OSU! I noticed that Monday with Tom's update - all of those guys listing 10/11 elite schools and OSU nowhere to be seen, then yesterday with Lewis's dad saying that they would pick any Big Ten school except Ohio, now this! Its great to see that this scandal seems to be destroying their reputation with recruits!
'Bama is probably the biggest challenger to Michigan for the following reasons:
1) SABAN!!!!!!!!!!!
2) The SEC roolz!!!!!!!
3) 'Bama boosters/hostesses
4) 'Bama is a popular pick to make it to the MNC game this season (no snark on this one)
Depends on the hostess...
or
Some OSU fans are so delusional! This whack job over on the Bucknuts forum just said " most are expecting minimal sanctions, i'm hearing most kids are just holding their spots at other schools, until this blows over". They have lost their minds! I wonder if the poor bastards in Hitler's bunker sounded like this?
but what he says could well be true. A lot of the guys the buckeyes are losing out on were once super heavy OSU leans (locks even) and have chosen other schools. With that in mind you have to assume the major reason was fear in regard to the penalties that OSU would face as a result of the NCAA investigation.
If the NCAA decides that OSU should get off easy, it wouldn't surprise me if a few of these Ohio players who committed to other schools don't flip to OSU (not saying any of ours will, just that some Ohio recruits might).
I have to say that given the circumstances (Tressel resigning and Pryor leaving) I am a little concerned the NCAA might give OSU a slap on the wrist. They have done nothing in the recent past to give me any confidence that they understand the notion of "the punishment should fit the crime".
Conventional wisdom would suggest with both JT and TP gone the only one left to punish is the University.
I agree with you 100% and think they should get the book thrown at them. My problem is that the "NCAA" and "conventional wisdom" seldom go hand in hand. That is my fear.
are convinced that the BMV finding no wrong doing in the car deal case means the NCAA will take it easy on them. I have to admit that I'm starting to fear that they will get a slap on the wrist too. There haven't been any more LOA's from the NCAA with the new stories that surfaced, cargate turned up nothing (so far), and there appears to be no evidence in the Talbott case. Plus the new stories with UNC, Oregon and Georgia are taking the spotlight off Columbus.
I turned on the BTN last night and was watching a bit of the Wisconsin vs Ohio State when for some reason I started thinking about Anthony Gonzalez the former OSU WR who is now in the NFL. Does anyone remember how he owned an oxygen tent? I thought I remembered hearing this but wondered if I might've made it up in my head. This bed sounded pricey to me so I thought I'd check it out. I found "It’s not surprising that Gonzalez invested $5,000 in the tent" in http://tucsoncitizen.com/morgue/2007/01/06/37806-ohio-state-wrs-leave-foes-breathless/
Where does a student-athlete get $5000 to spend on an oxygen bed? It's probably nothing but maybe...
I know this is off topic for this thread but I'm unable start my own. Apologies to the OP.
filthy rich.
is the Buckeye fan base reaction when someone decommits or actually takes OSU off the short list -- he sucks, we don't need any traitors anyway, I hope he blows a knee, etc. Add the threats to him and his family, and that sort of thing can turn a 17 year-old kid off his once-and-former tavorite school. I am hoping the Buckeyes continue to be unable to control themselves and drive the recruits away permanently through their abuse of message boards and social media. Their Buckeye nature works against them. Like the scorpion stinging the fox while it carried him across the river causing them both to drown, "I can't help it. I'm a scorpion."
Buckeye fans are the some of the worst without a doubt, but the tressel era has spoiled them they have become overwhelmed with the osu is better than all and if you don't think so you are not good enough to be here.....That is what makes Michigan a better program. When we win or lose morals need to stay in place. Bo taught us how to when the right way while Woody punced opposing players.
That was an awesome two-parter on Star Trek:Voyager.
Suck it, DS9 slappies!
Well played.
Anybody else worried about MSU? After snagging Pittman, I'm a bit worried they have a great shot at Washington (and thus also Stanford).
that Washington and Pittman didn't want to play together....I might be wrong though, perhaps it was Wormley. I do know that I heard two of the Ohio kids didn't want to play together though (and I think it was Washington and Pittman).
I heard that two but OSU and MSU people have both said that it wasn't true and they like the idea of playing together.
very possible as I have only heard mention of it on this site. At least I know I am not crazy since you say you heard it too. I'll just hold out hope that it's true, though it doesn't seem to be the case if Pittman is committed to MSU and Washington has them in his top 5...dammit!
Pardon my Michigan arrogance, but I'm not. Why go to MSU when you could go to U-M now? I could see it during the RR years when the football programs had very different approaches, but now Dantonio/MSU just strikes me as a very poor man's Hoke/Michigan.
I personally would steer away from that argument until we see how Hoke does in atleast his first year. Dantonio has already proven himself (with the exception of playing against elite teams or teams having great seasons), but his record since coming to MSU is very positive. I am waiting to see how Hoke does, but I believe it will be positive in his first season.
Thats because it is.
I believe your services are needed at mlive, no need to fill this blog with your octopus ink.
I don’t think UM should be too worried about losing Washington to MSU. I do however feel MSU should be worried about losing Pittman to OSU if the sanctions are less than expected.. With all the past and present DL coaching experience on UM’s staff it’s going to be hard for these recruits to look past this, coupled with all the other benefits of UM in my opinion.
Any 247 Insiders out there. I noticed in the article that it says "Michigan has offered a WR/S". Trying to figure out who it is.
The header says that West Virginia has offered a Michigan WR/S.
Thanks detrocks.....night shift.....UGH!!!
If the plan is still to take around 25 or 26 players, I would hope that the coaches are recruiting to fill up around 23 or 24 of those spots now, leaving 2-3 spots for national signing day and the AA game. I would hate to see us miss out on talent like Washington, Shittu, Peat, and whoever else due to the fact that we couldn't wait a few more months to let them have their moment and enjoy the process. I love our class and trust our coaches strategies and judgements, but I will be disappointed if we grab other players instead of them only because they were willing to commit early.
There's a difference between Pittman's "commit" and Washington. Pittman was chomping at the bit to commit to someone that would accept someone of his academic stature, but he's very much still looking around. I'm not aware of academic issues with Washington and I think he's more likely to stay committed to whichever school he first gives a verbal to.
Also, unless you hear that Stanford is also interested in MSU, it's less of an issue. I'm curious to see Stanford's list and how they compare. According to his Scout profile, he's interested in all the same schools and then some. Anyone know when he's narrowing it down?
Good point! I forgot about the Stanford scenario. I think MSU has received a commit from a WR and has about 3 more WRs that are very interested in them.
Greatest video clip of the day.
So, basically he replaced OSU with MSU since he put his first top 5 list out a few weeks back? Would the biggest competition for him come from Alabama, Miami or both? Maybe Pittman is trying to persuade him to look at MSU strongly.
On 247sports, it has Stanford of having a top 2 consisting of LSU and OSU. For washington it has a top 5 that does not consist of LSU (but does have OSU in there as the 6th school). If this is accurate, then does this mean they have decided that attending the same school may not be a possibility for them? I would not put OSU in Washington's list because it was not mentioned by his father. I would love to see Stanford at Michigan, but if he does not decide for here and Washington does, and Payton also does, then I would be enthusiastic about it.
Don't put too much weight into what recruiting sites like 24/7 say about a recruit's top schools. It usually seems to be speculation, especially as is seems some of the sites don't always have all of the recruit's scholarship offers listed.
Sounds pretty accurate. I don't see all the recruiting sites saying the samething, so I will agree with what you say.
Thanks
Love the Jalen Rose quote in your sig haha
I don't think we should we overlook Kentucky, especially if Calipari lets play basketball.
Does Washington have a high (or higher) interest in basketball over football? I haven't read to much of how interested he is in basketball, but if it were solely dependent on football, then wouldn't the tradition in Michigan, Miami and Alabama be way ahead of Kentucky?
Kentucky is the local school of that group. UK is only an hour and a half from his home, and a lot of people in Cincinnati grow up fans of Kentucky sports, so it's possible he did too. Not that Cinci is all that far from AA, but it's about 3 times farther than UK is.
