Really, this is worthy of a board topic? Pretty sure Green will talk to Keizer about it, and pretty sure Keizer will let Green have the number for the appropriate number of Chipotle burritos.

Uh-oh. #27 is taken??
Yeah, this is certainly less relevant than the topic where some guy announced he was retiring at age 35.
I think both topics are stupid..so dont feel bad
That recently went to committee. Two of the rules specifically deal with players' numbers—one requiring officials be notified of number changes occurring during a game and the other disallowing two players on the same team and at the same position from wearing the same number. To help those keeping score at home, this means its pretty common for more than one player to wear a particular number. So much so that the NCAA already has rules in place and is considering additional rules to govern the many instances where this already occurs. It's a non issue and that's the reason you are catching so much flak Decatur.
You're absolutely right. This is more relevant than a lot of other threads on the board right now. However, if I was to create a thread about how I drove past the big house today, it also would be technically "more relevant" than the 35 y.o. retiree. Relevancy does not necessarily constitute board worthiness.
This is something that happens all the time (pros, college and even high school), and isn't a big deal (for the team, for the blog, and/or for Derrick). Either Derrick will move on to a new number, he and Keizer will make a deal, they'll share the number or the walk on will be forced to give it up if Green is a baby about it. If you're still concerned about it, Green's already signed is LOI, so he's locked in, and if a jersey number is enough for him to want to transfer, do you really someone so thickheaded like that on the team anyways. Quit worrying and think before creating a thread next time (the tribe's clearly spoken that this was best left unposted).
Chipotle burritos, yum. 27 maybe?
Slow news day, isn't it?
Half of me is still laughing about the "advice for torn ACL" thread. The other half hopes he ignored all of the advice except for those who told him to get advice from a doctor.
It's only a problem if they both are on the field at the same time. There are plenty of repeat numbers when you include walk-ons. Unless Keizer is the next Jordan Kovacs, it's a non-issue.
Wasn't a problem for Notre Dame against Pitt last year on Pitt's missed game-winning FG attempt.
They should race for it.
Or just let Green have it.
I think they should fight to the death for it in the arena called the Big House in front of all michigan players past and present, with Hoke deciding the fate of the loser.
Hmmm 5 star RB or walk on receiver getting #27. I think they'll get it worked out somehow.
I don't like the idea of Green getting the number because of his recruiting credentials. Once he is a member of 134, they are all equals. Except he's a freshman, and Keizer is a RS Soph. I think seniority should rule here, and I would hope the coaches and players would agree.
Yeah, and everybody should get to play too, well, except the freshmen. Equality is what should rule always, well except for seniority.
Not at all the same situation. I do appreciate when people take irrelevant situations to the extreme to prove their (non)points, though.
So I'll just leave a reply saying "you're awesome"
Im sure he wont mind giving the jersey up...
Said he can have 27 back when he picks a new favorite player.
To be fair, George is the one who first told Green to consider Michigan. And Eddie George's top two schools coming out of high school were M and OSU.
But what does Hoke say and who is this Hole person?
Holes!
I'm guessing that "we" won't be consulted.
Why don't we also freak out about Devin Gardner wearing 12 as a QB, and that being Shane's number in high school?
I think this matter much more to fans and OP than it does Green.
Morris grew up an M fan. Seriously doubt him getting upset enough over a number to transfer.
Are you seriously implying that D Green might get so upset that 27 is taken that he will transfer? That's a joke right? Seriously, that's the most ridiculous thing that's ever been posted on MGoBlog - and that's saying something. Regardless, if it's a big enough issue, I'm sure the walk on will give up the number.
It's half-serious. Green wears #27 everywhere (high school, Army Bowl, commitment announcement) that you'd think he might be a little upset over this.
Of course you guys could all be right and the coaches will just say screw the walk-on here you go Green.
I really don't think the coaches would say "fuck off this guy wants 27." Like someone else said, Green will probably ask to whoever has it about it and this thread will turn into a non-issue really really fast.
Here's the thing you don't get: More than one player on a team can have the same number. PROBLEM SOLVED.
Actually, I'm pretty sure you're wrong. You can have 2 of the same number on the roster but you can't have 2 offensive players or defensive players who both wear a number. So Green could share the number with a DB but not a WR. In fact, a quick scan of Michigan's roster shows that this interpretation is correct at least in terms if how the roster is made up right now.
two players with the same # can't be on the field at the same time.
You can't define an 'offensive' or 'defensive' player as some guys take snaps on both sides of the ball, guys switch positions - OL to DL, things like that.
You're right - and the way teams go about handling it is to assign repeated numbers to players who typically play on different sides of the ball. I thought I remembered reading a rule about it years ago. Should have checked first.
that you can't have two players with the same # on the field at the same time. Unless you have the "luck" of the Irish, that is:
http://search.yahoo.com/r/_ylt=A0oG7hwQyCBRoEYAS1VXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTE1NWZ...
Notre Dame’s “Desperado” Brain cramp. The Irish’s game-saving break on Kevin Harper’s missed 33-yard field goal could’ve been erased because of a special teams snafu, with both Bennett Jackson and Chris Brown being a part of the Irish’s kick block team. Since both players wear the number two, they aren’t allowed to be on the field at the same time unless one of them switches jerseys and declares himself to the refs. But that didn’t happen, and while the refs didn’t spot it, it could’ve been called for a penalty, a situation that already happened when Danny McCarthy and Justin Ferguson both wore No. 15.
Kelly didn’t sugarcoat the mistake when he discussed it Sunday.
“It was a coaching mistake. We had put our Desperado team on there, and Chris Brown is part of Desperado,” Kelly explained. “Just we’ve got to do a better job. An oversight that can’t happen.”
but OP, you're clearly not very bright, at least not today.
He definitely did not say that. You definitely put those words in his mouth.
FWIW, Shane has said he doesn't want to wear #12 in college. He tweeted the other day that he sent in his potential number requests: 7, 10, and 2.
Both 7 (Leach, Henne) and 10 (Brady, Collins) would look good. I think 2 is reserved for a DB.
Yeah Hoke said it's going to become the defensive version of the No. 1 jersey
Walk-ons share numbers with scholarship guys all the time. They just can't be on the field at the same time (and probably won't).
You're right, HUGE problem. Green will probably transfer
Better title next time please
It's quicker to ignore it than bitch
HOLY CRAP GUYS. Jeez, I thought this was a legitimate topic to discuss, but I guess all the downvotes means I misfired.
I guess no one thinks Green will transfer because he doesn't get to wear #27 or the Freep won't write a story about how Michigan coaches made a poor helpless walk-on give up his number for Green.
I guess I'm the only one worried slightly worried this could be a problem.
Carry on, then.
Dont worry about it, people just post to hate to be "cool".
Yes, you are WAAAAAY overthinking this. Lay off the drink tonight. Think of the children. No one in their right mind would transfer because they couldn't get a certain number.
Mgorob...go get a drink tonight
What about Shane Morris? What if he doesn't get his high school number? What if a walk-on has it?
C'mon man. You can't be that drunk or that naive to think this is an issue.
Don't be pissed because you thought you uncovered or found something and it turned out to be nothing more than shit.
When has this EVER been an issue? Someone transferring over a number? The FREEP sucks, but even they think your "scoop" sucks.
Big Johnny Falk has it under control.
#1!
#amirite??
I've wanted a physical number 6 in the backfield ever since my favorite running back left.
what the fuck. How many walkons are wearing the same numbers as scholarship players? Who gives a fuck. He will probably wear # fucking 27 because the other 27 will not be on the field when Green is. What the titty fucking hell.
Keizer is a WR.
as in this NEVER happens between 100+ players on 250+ CFB teams
This is probably one of the most pointless threads in the history of the internet. Please don't inflict your thoughts on us anymore. Thanks.
Man, when you guys hate, you guys really hate.
You've been here at least a year and a half. If you haven't figured that out until now, I forgive you for making this thread...
Not really. This thread still sucks.
EDIT: Changed atleast to at least because I know what is accepted here and what isn't.
I seriously thought it was worthy of discussion. I just I'm just super fucking paranoid that kids will transfer because of the stupidest reasons.
Clearly if no one is worried and thinks Green will stay here forever and ever (because we've never had players leave) then yeah this thread seems pretty pointless.
Please stop.
Can't say I've ever heard of a transfer due to jersey # being taken by another player, let alone a walkon.
Are you purposely trying to make a thread so stupid that people will regularly reference it when criticizing future threads? If so, you may have a winner.
But I also enjoy it when "Mr Roboto" comes on the radio.
You're right about that at least. The mgo is both an extremely charitable (see: #eating/Pahokee garden) and at the same time cruel and fickle (see: this and any other borderline pointless or repeat thread) community. It's quite a duality, really.
But chin up. No matter how dumb these comments say this is, they still don't hate you as much as they hate Section One.
We do not suffer fools lightly.
Thought I'd come onto mgoblog for some insightful message board talk....And then I looked at this thread first.
Well, see ya tomorrow!
cheeseburgers.
...but not nearly as much as Woody Hayes or the zombie boy.
No drama here.
This IS a huge problem. I will be sweating a transfer until he graduates..
But is Hoke involved in the recruiting process?
Walkons don't get first choice of numbers.
I guess that rules out the possibility that we'll both be on the field at the same time.
#36 is taken. My dad and my brother wore that in high school, I'm sure if they were going to Michigan to play they wouldn't be upset.
Because it's freaking Michigan!
This thread is gayer than aids
Not that we have a problem with that..
I think you got lost. Let me help: mlive.com
Where's the drinking thread? I thought for sure this would be it!
R & C, lotsa ice.
So dumb I'll say it again...um, no? Someone get me a Good Burger gif pronto.
the players wear the jersey the equipment guy gives them.
kids aren't donating money to some charity in order to have the bench players give their numbers to the stars.
Is this really a thread? I thought you were better than this MGoBlog.
Let the kid get on campus, qualifiy and make the team before we talk about jersey numbers.
You cannot take it for granted.
Is this the new "I won't get excited until Signing Day"?
This kataklysmic numbering controversy would never have happened if Hoke had just gotten personally involved in recruiting
I thought #27 was a QB assignment. The Don Moorhead Legends jersey:
Come on, man. Is this seriously a thread? If he ditches because of a jersey number, he should never have committed here.
But if he doesn't get 27, there's plenty of other great options. Taking 20 for Mike Hart, 23 for Chris Perry, or 32 for the A-Train would be good starting points.
Jonathan Keizer's choice of number
won't affect Green, whether Keizer wears this number
or this number
Gif representation of this thread...
You are a great human being for posting this.
Painful.
I am so happy right now.
Seth really needs to start a new Friday feature "worst of the worst" as measured by down votes. The amazing thing to me is that the OP seriously worried this might be a reason to transfer. How anyone could spend almost two years here and still believe that is almost unbelievable but as evidenced by his responses in the thread he tried to DEFEND it.
There would be a lot to choose from this week but this one would be hard to beat.
Lets hope that he is a good freshman, understands that an older player has the number he wants, and chooses a new one.
You hear all the time about players buying their preferred number from the incumbent --usually when a star comes in through free agency. Probably does not happen like that in college, although perhaps at a school down the road that appears to use tattoos as currency it might very well work the same way...
UM "fans" that track sparty stories and games. That is not even news worthy.
He will get #27, I doubt whether he didnt choose Tennessee or auburn because 27 was already taken. I imagined him taking #32 anyways...the D-Train!
...your thread sucks.
This just in from the "Cool Story, Bro" Department:
My brother-in-law played at Mt. Union. He was telling me that their roster was so large that at one point, they had 3-4 guys wearing the same number, for most of the numbers.
This is a non-issue.
This, has ended well.
I'm not usually one to pick on a thread, but a walk-on wears the same number as a starter all the time. IIRC a walk-on receiver had the same number as Guitierrez back in 04. Ee might have been called on at any time (including garbage time) and also was the holder for field goals. It was never a problem. I can't even imagine a scenario in which a walk-on receiver sees the field at the same time as a starting (?) RB. We're good there.
MGoIdiot.
carry on...
What we need here is two sides of bacon
STAT.
Why is this a thread?
Dammit you made edits before I can ridicule. Suffice to say guys on the scout team change their numbers all the damn time. You'll note that 11 is not the 2nd, not the 3rd, not the 4th, but the 5th number Kovacs has worn in his Michigan career, according to him. I don't have all of them in front of me but there was one number he wore when trying out in 2008, one number when trying out in 2009, and then he was wearing 22 going into the 2009 season. He switched to 32 after his first game, and because of this his coaches got him confused with another walk-on who'd been wearing that number.
