Ugly win, but still progress

Submitted by Oscar Goldman on

Unlike the past few years, the boys found a way to win a game in which they struggled mightily.  Was it a well-played game?  Clearly not, but at least this year they managed to win a game like this.  Congrats to the team.

Our team never quit and in fact our defense was good.  Then again with the weather, it was all about holding onto the ball and not making mistakes.  We made our share, but Purdue did also.  I will enjoy the win.

Could we please stop with this line of thinking. Denard still had 240 yards of total offense in what can only be described as a monsoon. Just because it isn't the 500 yards he put up against shitty competition doesn't mean he is dropping off. It means he is playing good enough to win against tougher competition. I am just waiting for a "let's start Tate" post.  Sometimes I hate our fanbase.

You hate our fanbase because one guy said something dumb?  That's possibly even more ridiculous logic than what McFarlin used.

Anyway, while it was rainy, it was no monsoon.  Northwestern '98, now that was a monsoon.

Last week he threw for 305 yards on 20 attempts despite three drops.

Today he really wasn't that bad outside of the two interceptions.  He was 13-21 for 176 yards.  Magee's playcalling did him no favors in the second half, completely abandoning the pass on first and second down.  It's harder to throw when the only time you do it is in an obvious situation.

What keeps haunting me is that Brandon said he wasn't counting W's and L's, but progress.  Seemed like that was in short supply today, but a win is a win.

The defense played its best game of the year by a wide margin, effectively outscoring Purdue 7-3. (I'm counting that 16-yard drive for their second FG against the offense, not the defense.) The OL was bad, but they've shown that  they're capable of playing much better, and I don't think we would have turned it over so much in dry conditions.

I suppose it's a sign of progress for the team (if not the fans) that some people are complaining about a double-digit conference road win.

Muppets? I am not sure. A win, but is it a Muppet worthy win? Or are all wins Muppet worthy? Is a win over OSU worthy of having your own personal muppet show in the basement. These are the questions that keep me going.

but a win is a win. Big game coming up against Wisc, who I think is very vulnerable to defeat (especially on road). That would be a huge win for the program, momentum going into OSU where anything can happen if we DON'T TURN THE BALL OVER.

Doing this with the worst defense in the history of the universe is all the more impressive. (Stud defensive recruits, please, please, please come to UM...Thank You)

GO BLUE!!!

I think we're seeing some of our raw defensive talent start to show signs of learning from the experiences we've had this year. Great plays made by a lot of younger guys today.

on the road in bad weather.  The defense stepped up today with great tackling and forcing turnovers.  Looking ahead though, we can't make that many mistakes and be competitive against Wisky and OSU.

I'll take any win these days but damn.  We're still turning the ball over too much and still taking too many 15 yard penalties.

If we play anything like we did today against Wisconsin and OSU, we're going to get destroyed.

D played well against a team that absolutely could not throw the ball further than 10 yards.

Our offense was Purdue's best offensive weapon.  This was ugly, and should never be watched again.  We should have trounced this team.

but, Hooray 7 wins!

As I said on the liveblog, this is the first time in RR's tenure that we have complained about (or laughed at the comincal high-school-eness of) a win.  That's progress even if its a somewhat perverse way of showing it.
