UConn at Michigan Sept 4, 2010: Start Worrying?

Submitted by markusr2007 on

Just glancing over at UConn's progress year-to-date.

Kind of similar situation to Michigan in that they're 4-5 and only 1-4 in Big East conference play.

Then I took a look at their schedule results so far.

All four wins were decisive, 7 points or more.

All five losses have been by 4 points or less.

Assuming decent number of returning starters, that's a very good sign for a team set to make the most improved list next year.

Not sure how many players are coming back for 2010 season. I think they might lose their leading receiver Easley to graduation, but QB Endres and TB Todman will be back next season.

For the inaugural game of renovated Michigan Stadium, it should be a very interesting matchup.

They'll return most of their (surprisingly very good) offense next year, with the exception of the dreadlocked RB Andre Dixon. The defense, on the other hand, will lose quite a bit in the secondary, but the front seven will remain mostly intact.

The defense is giving up about 366 ypg and 23 ppg, so they aren't world beaters by any measure. Should actually be a fun game to watch come next year.

Should be a fun game, but the two teams will look quite different next year as compared to today. At this point, trying to figure how good both teams will be is more an exercise in frustration.

The answer to the title question is no.

We've still got ten months to go before the game. We don't know who our recruits are. We don't know if anyone is leaving the team. We don't know if anyone is planning to transfer. As about half the board would gleefully point out, we don't know if Rodriguez or GERG will be here next year. It's far too early to begin predicting what might happen in 2010.

We should wait until the season is over before you even think of worrying about next year. We've got two, maybe three games left. Let's focus on those first.

I love how everyone has already given up on this season. With two games left who knows what can happen, it's college football. OSU is a rivalry game. Do you remember when a 6-5 OSU team came in and beat the #11 ranked Wolverines back in 2001? Who says we can't do the same back to them?

As for UConn, I wouldn't expect us to lose a home opener against a Big East team at the same level as us.

It is a better match up than most of our OOC games lately. I won't even consider worrying until a week or so before the game. What is the point about worrying about a game 10 months away when we have a game less than a week away?

during the game last night, they showed the UConn o-line dimensions. lots of fatties. i think the smallest was 290 something, like michigan linemen of old.

i also like how every now and then you get a blog post saying "we still have more games left to focus on." the best part (and maybe worst part, too) of not playing football is that i can focus on whatever season i like and it affects the team in absolutely no way. there is not some sort of oiuja board that the defensive coordinator is using that collects the subconscious focus of all the bloggers and channels them into some brilliant blitz/cover scheme.

or is there?......

Everyone said we were going to have a close game if not lose against WMU this year. They had a great QB, all this offense coming back etc..

I would hope to see them play with a little anger but I really haven't seen that yet aside from BG and Minor when he's on the field.

I have worries for next year of course but not UCONN.

Kind of funny how everyone complains about playing the teams like Del State because there is nothing to gain from it but now we are going to play UCONN and we have people posting about worrying about them beating us.

Im pretty worried about Wisoonsin myself. Ohio State's up on that list too. As much as I've critisized what Rich Rod has done so far, his team is still in bowl contention. There are two games left. Its not over until its played. Transitive properties do not apply to football. Lou Holtz is correct, it's about who's the best team on the field that day. While i disagree with almost everything he's done to this point (And i loved him at WVU), his team has two games left to play, and if he gets them ready to go they can get themselves an extra game.

I have been watching UConn to pop up for the last few years and they seem to be like the Iowa of the Big East. Usually 8-10 wins with the possible contention of a conference championship and they always seem to reload really well, however, they don't get top recruits so even when they do keep most of their starters, it isn't something to fret over.

I expect it to be a close game with Michigan getting the edge because UConn won't know what to prepare for.
