UConn Mailbag - UM Stadium A Role Player? Blog insults?

Submitted by 919 Brown on
Q: You know what's funny to me. I have been reading many UM football blogs (all of which blow by the way Dez) and all of them, present a common theme with regard to the UConn game. They seem to think that the re-dedication of the stadium is going to play a role in the outcome of the game. As if the players are going to play harder and the fans are going to yell louder (aside from the added seats) just because the stadium has added state of the art features. Funny. - Steve, CT
A: Anthony Sherman told me yesterday that when the team watches game film there are no stadium shots in what they see - just the field and the players. That's what they prepare for. They'll obviously prepare for crowd noise and all that but Sherm's point is very well-taken.

OK Steve in Connecticut, you obviously never visited MGoBlog in your quest for info. But if by chance you did and still managed to form that opinion, you best be prepared to throw down, pally. Insult my mother, fine, comment about my sister, so be it, but my precious MGoBlog?! Oh no you di'int!

And by the way Steve, nothing can prepare your team for the Big House, NOTHING!

UCONN plays in the Big East, I wouldn't expect them to understand the role a stadium can play in a game. Yeah. Insult our blogs and I will insult your stadiums, take that!

Well, UConn, you will be playing in front of 110,000 people, something you've probably never had to deal with before. I'm guessing that's 2-3 times bigger than most BE stadiums. The fans will be cheering loudly because of the rededication and because of Brock and because it's the 1st game of the season. This will make our players more pumped up, which results in them trying harder.

In my endless perusal of this blog and others, I have never seen anyone cite the rededication of the stadium as a factor on opening day.  One, related to the rededication, I have seen is the increased noise due to the finished structures and two, the emotional chord that Brock will strike leading them onto the field.  That and it's opening fucking day.  I hope Steve from CT has the privelage of going to the game and experiences first hand what big time college football looks like.

Link or it didn't happen, Steve from CT.

Look, this guy is a UConn fan.  Not to get all "Michigan arrogance" but can you really expect him to get it?  He has probably never attended a game where there are more than 50,000 fans, or a game where half of the people in the stands have spent the prior 8 months looking forward to the game.  After the game, hopefully he will get it.

right before the season started, there was a shitstorm of bad news and negatvie spin articles about the University of Michigan and its football program.  As each day passed, the articles got worse and enfuriated me more and more with the culmination being the Rosenberg/Snyder hit piece on rules violations conveniently placed in late August just before the start of the season.  All of these things led to a rage inside me as I'd never been so pumped for a season opener ever before.  I felt it, other UM fans felt it and I'm 100% sure the UM players felt it and all of the bullshit drew the team much closer together.  Call it what you will naysayers, blast this team and this university all you want Steve in CT, but I assure you, on September 4th, UCONN better get ready for the ass-whooping of the century.  I'll be there cheering my ass off, being as loud and raucous as I've ever been to show all of the non-believing assholes what Michigan football is all about.  So bring on the unranked poll predictions, the 5-7 W/L records and 10th place Big Ten projections, I don't care.  You're only adding to the fire.

September 4th is circled real big, in blue, on our calendars.  We know how important this game is.  You'll see...

I'm fine getting worked up a bit if some national writer or blogger makes derogatory statements about the team (though at this point, they are likely just parrotting earlier comments), but this is just some random guy named Steve in CT who probably din't even know UConn had a football team until they went D-1.  As our fearless leader Brian has said before:

The luxury seating is only worth an additional 3-point swing, and likewise the 110,000+ crowd and additional volume contribute 2 points each.[*]  So, Steve has a point -- all of that adds up to only 7 of the 28-point a**-whupping his team's going to suffer come Sept. 4.

It's probably going to be tough to have reasonable online discourse with UConn fans.  This is a program that has only been in I-A for about a decade, so its fanbase is almost entirely of the bandwagon variety.
