If you look at Clemson's compensation for their coaches and the high rated draft classes they pull in along with the talent they send to the NFL....

That program is underwhelming as fuck.

No, not really. Carr and staff were horribly underpaid by CFB standard and DB adjusted to market price. Of course he hired the wrong patsy ....er, coach, but he also brought M staff pay into the 21st century. And I don't recall one complaint about what we paid the "Alabama OC" to come to A2 at the time.

Question: If Michigan lands Miles would Michigan pay the kind of salaries required to keep his assistants on assuming that some of them make the move? Increasing staff salaries one or two spots doesnt seem like that much of an issue but jumping up from the ninth spot to compete with the top team is a different story.

Of couse, a coach like John Chavis can command an enormous salary and is a lifelong southern coach so I can see him staying in the SEC. But the others? Why would they take the same gig for less? Can we see Hackett paying up?

Also, I know we're hearing that Harbaugh would command and nab a (near) record salary...what about his assistants?

I guess with either coaching option the Assisant salaries would go up.  For LM's group, I would assume that the cost of living in Ann Arbor may be higher than Baton Rouge.  And for JH's group, I would assume that top NFL Assistants make quite a bit more and even though cost of living may be less in Ann Arbor vs. Bay Area, they wont want a pay cut.

If someone is real into doing some solicited research/math,I would love to have a breakdown of total coach+coordinator salaries for all of the top 10 schools, and the percentage each coach/coordinator accounts for from said total. Hope that wasn't too long-winded. New to the board and it seems first impressions are key.

You would want a few years and a flag when there is a coaching change. Perhaps have a difference in salary and the season/post season bonus as well.

It may also be interesting to look at when there is a large difference in the OC vs the DC or perhaps position coaches. Does Saban underpay the offense and overpay the defense or vice versa?

Reminds me of the time I called a plumber to fix a leak in my kitchen sink.

After fifteen minutes, the plumber finishes and  gives me a bill for $250.

I say, “Geez. I’m on the Super Lawyers list for the top 100 lawyers in Southern California, and even I don’t make that kind of money for fifteen minutes of work.”

So the plumber says, “Yeah, I know. I never made that kind of money when I was on that list.”

Good article!

I think this is key for us. I think we need to can Freddy Jackson have for years. Wish we could snag Wisky RB coach. Only reason we keep him is his ties to High school coaches.

We need to step out game up in this field big time!

Given that boosters can apparently pay off the head coach's mortgage, can they do the same kind of things with the Assistants?

If we need to, can we have Steve Ross give the desired new Assistants a little boost in pay beyond what the AD can do?

We should at least make up that $88,000 on Ohio State.  Steve Ross can find that much between the cushions of his couch.

Maybe Nuss's record on the offensive side of the ball wasn't so great last year, but that could be due to a lot of factors that weren't his fault.

-first year on the job

-attempting to fit spread Devin Gardner into a power offense

-great fall-off in wide receiver talent from 2013 to 2014 (no one close to Gallon; Funchess came down with a case of the give-ups).

-continued O-line woes (but should take another step up next year)

Dantonio was DC at tOSU before going to Staae, so some precedent; we didn't do all that well with a couple "proven" head coaches, now did we? Nuss would provide some continuity to a storm-tossed program and maybe halt the exodus of committed recruits. He's a known quantity to the current roster. He could take a QB like Speight or even Malzone (I don't know about Morris) and mold him into a good starting QB in the A J Mccarron mold.

Neither Harbaugh nor Cutcliffe nor anyone else would do much better with the talent M currently has on its roster. Rivals has M 88th in national recruiting after all the defecttions. It'll take several years to recoup those losses. A young Nussmeier, especially if he has a reasonably successful season next year, could recruit well if he's reasonably assured of a long-term future. And for what it's worth, Nuss's salary would be much more palatable to a less-than-fanatic football fan like President Schliss.

Just a thought.

This is so dumb on so may levels. You list 4 items. You do realize that, as the OC, Nuss was responsible for three of them? He determined the system DG was put in. Our receiver talent did not drop off at all. They just weren't trained with fundamentals and just didnt seem to care. And the OL, the buck stops with Nuss. Good coaches coach kids up, They put them in the best position to succeed, and get them to play to their ceiling. Nuss did neither of those.

I think we'd need to exhaust all possible decent coaching options before we even think about going down that road.  Maybe if it was January and Hoke quit suddenly, leaving us no time to hire someone good.

Also, people need to stop freaking out about Schliss.  He's just the POTUM, and he answers to the Regents.  He won't have a job for long if he screws with athletics.

OK. Forgetting about whether or not you think ANY football coach ANYWHERE should be making that kind of money... Dave Brandon, to his credit as AD, made Michigan competitive in its ability to attract, financially, good assistants. He may have been less than perfect, but far from the devil incarnate.
