U-M Lacrosse Stadium to open Feb 10th

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

The schedules have been out for awhile now but no thread was ever made.

The key thing to note is that U-M Lacrosse Stadium will open this season.

Here is the Men's schedule. Some nice home games as first year head coach Kevin Conry looks to get us into the B1G Tournament for the first time ever. This year's tournament as well as the women's will be at U-M Lacrosse Stadium, so it would be nice to play in it.

Women's schedule. I have a really good feeling about this team under Hannah Nielsen. She's 29, a current pro lacrosse player and current member of Team Australia and the greatest women's lax player of all-time. She's won their version of the Heisman twice.

She won the tewaaraton award 3 times which is the most by any player. No doubt about it Hannah is a great player and is an exceptional coach with the talent to bring Michigan to the promise land. The next few years will be exciting to see how she turns the program into a perennial powerhouse.

how common is it to have a lacrosse-only stadium?

i know maryland is lacrosse royalty, and even they seem to share a stadium with field hockey and lacrosse.

I have been to lacrosse games at Harvard, Penn, and Ohio State.  Penn plays lacrosse in their very old football/track stadium, Franklin Field.  Ohio State plays lacrosse in their relatively new track/soccer stadium, Jesse Owens Stadium.  Harvard, weirdly, plays some of their games in their horseshoe football stadium and some on their soccer field.

Denver is the first that comes to mind. In fact, they were the first ones to have a lax-only stadium.

Hofstra has the biggest lax-only stadium with attendance numbers over 17,000 for NCAA Tournament games. Their field became lax-only after their football team disbanded in 2009.

Notre Dame also has one of the nicer facilities. Notre Dame may have copied Michigan's football stadium design, but Michigan may have done the same with the lacrosse facility.

Penn State is the only other one I can think of.

Barton is an amazing venue and definitely unique when built. But all DU has is Hockey and Lacrosse and the Ritchie Center hockey arena is great too. The biggest deal for M is having a facility on par (or better than) others for recruiting. My friends son starts at Maryland and was recruited by osu and psu - he said facilities at both were very impressive. I think combination of Conry & new digs will help accelerate ascension of the program.

Can really recruit against UMD, especially in women’s. The youth girls lacrosse in MD if light years ahead of other states. There is maybe one club team in NY and PA that can compete with the top 8 in MD. The boys are much closer State to state. Think MD trying to recruit football players against UM in reverse. There is a big gap on the field and culturally. The new stadium looks great though.

Was one of the first, Class of 1952 Stadium has been around since the late 90s. Mens and womens lax played there. Its a so so facility. Barton stadium in Denver is really nice. The new UM stadium is the nicest i have seen. Feels cozy, great stands, video board, locker rooms beneath stadium, they really knocked it out of the park. Has to be the nicest one I have seen yet, and I have seen them all.

This is a question with a really complicated answer.  For any school it depends on the size of the school's primary venue, and how big a crowd can be expected for lax compared to football (which depends not only on size of school, but how important lax is at the school, and how much area interest there is in lacrosse).

I went to school at Hopkins - arguably the bluest of the blue bloods - and Homewood Field is shared. Homewood seats 10k, and gets much bigger crowds for lacrosse than for its very successful D-III football team.  Hopkins has an smaller enrollment than Homewood has capacity, but in a city like Baltimore with really committed lacrosse fans any good contest is going to be well-attended.

TV is also affecting crowd sizes at lacrosse games, so a downside of being frequently televised can be lowered attendance at crappy weather games.

I would have thought that a post of "Mens Lacrosse Stadium to open Feb.10th" would have had some images of said Stadium. Post should have been called Mens Lacrosse schedule instead. Just sayin.
