I thought I read that cheerleading competitions were a racquet. Basically, any organization can hold a 'national' competition, charge fees, make money and give out a trophy. Is there some reason to think the NCA champtionship (not NCAA) is legit, other than the fact that UM students attended it? And please don't flame me for asking a legitimate question.

My daughter cheers (high school age) and I think I can help clear it up for you.

I don't think it is a racket the way you suggest, but there are a number of companies that run cheerleading events.  They do typically award "national championships" in each division at these tournaments.  These can go from "smaller" competitions to larger competitions.  For example, my daughter's gym went to Cheersport in Atlanta which was a HUGE competition of over 1,100 teams in various age groups and divisions.  (Her team won her division - non-humble brag from a proud dad.)  In the sport, there is a recognition of what is a "big deal" and what might not be quite as competitive.

College is a bit different, and winning NCA is a real accomplishment.  I think that there is another organization that has some of Southern schools that Michigan does not compete in.  However, NCA is still a national championship of which we should be proud.

UCA and NCA are the two established competitions for collegiate cheer.  UCA is arguably stronger depending on preference, but they are both legit, run by the same company, and some schools chose participation based on the academic calender (UCA nationals is in January.)  The criticism, as I understand it, is that Michigan competes in the Intermediate division with skill restrictions that puts them in a lower tier than other IA teams, ostensibly for safety concerns but I don't know the factors/rationale.  Agree with other posters that it would be helpful to reconsider going forward.

Here in Daytona for kids' spring break, and didn't even know this competition was going on here until we arrived. Injuries? Seems every team here (many are doing cheers and formations on the beach every night) has on average 1 set of crutches in the group. Congrats to the team. GO BLUE!!!

NCA would be the equivalent of the highest regarded competition for Cheerleading. Although, the U-M Cheerleading team competes in the Co-Ed Intermediate Division. This is a lower division within the competition. The D1 Large coed division is the true National Champion.

Unfortunately, I think the All-Girl team has not been able to even make it to a club level team at UofM. If there's anyone on the board here that can help them to that end, I'm sure they would appreciate it. I know it's been a goal they've been working towards.

Cool, it's like Michigan Football winning the FCS. You would think after 3 straight championships they could move out of the intermediate division. This Is Michigan. Glad they won, but time to advance.
