Some people are asking "is he even proven" but I think it would be a good hire because 1. He would replace Fred Jackson 2. He is from the Inkster/Metro Detroit area and 3. He played in the NFL for 8-9 years. He has coached college and pro and I believe he would recruit very well.

I'm not sure we'll know.  From the recruitniks out there, Jr. hasnt' been hearing from MI all that much lately (obvioulsy that would change if his dad were to come coach here).

On the other hand, he recently released a top four that did not include Michigan, but did include heavyweights such as Alabama.  Who knows what will end up happening.  Maybe he'll come to M if his father is hired.  Either way, I could see Jr wanting to forge his own path somewhere else.

I can't help but think the, "I played in the NFL and know what it takes", has got to both help with recruiting and buying in.

This is for RB coach right?  Have we done a run down of Coordinator positions since the one a few days ago when it was guesses and unicorns? Okay maybe a tad more concrete but still. No idea what's official at this point if anything?

That 1991 Washington team was raging with steroid use.  I've repressed most of that game but seem to remember Steve (don't make me angry...you wouldn't like me when I'm angry) Emtman blowing past double teams all day long and living in our back field.  Our O line was pretty damn good too.

I'm confused. There's been a dude (I assume) on the boards that's been swearing up and down since Harbaugh was hired that he knew Wheatley on some level and that this wasn't happening due to differences in their personalities or something.

Haha come on man give me some credit. I know the difference b/w Mike Hart and Tyrone Wheatley - my favorite Wolverine EVAH. This guy posted in a couple of threads in the days after Harbaugh was hired. Said he knew Wheatley, and based on their personality differences (I took that to mean coaching styles), he didn't think Wheatley was interested in working for Harbaugh.

I'd dig out the comments but I'm too lazy to do it.

But he's a big-time hire.  I thought I had heard that he wasn't looking for a lateral move, but maybe he is fine taking the RB job since it's under Harbaugh, who he will learn a lot from.

He's a great recruiter, he has pro and college coaching experience, and obviously has great name recognition from his playing days.  He woulld fit the mold of young, hungry, up-and-coming guy that is going to build Harbaugh's coaching tree.

Of all the "Michigan Men," Harbaugh is the only one who can build a new "coaching tree."   The reason is that Harbaugh took Bo's lessons but then gained valuable experience outside of the Schembechler coaching tree.  Now, he has a chance to build a "tree" that is even more impressive than Bo's, which IIRC won three National Championships (Carr, McCartney, Miles), albeit two of those are split championships.

The mark of a great student is to surpass the master.  Hopefully, that is exactly what happens with Harbaugh.

I rather felt compelled to go back and watch some of WolverineHistorian's video compilation of Tyrone Wheatley highlights (I had the fortune of seeing several of the runs in that video in person too) and I was very quickly reminded of why this hire - if it happens - would be an excellent hire, not to mention the NFL and coaching experience at both levels.

I dont udnerstand the logic here. Or I think the emphasis is misplaced. I want to see highlights of the running backs Wheatley has coached rather than highlights of his own running back days. Knowing how to teach is primary, having a history in the position is necessary, but secondary. The 'excelllent hire' lies in his coaching ability, not in how good of a running back he was. Hell, he might have been only a bench-warming backup at a D-II program, but that doesnt  mean he doesnt know the position. The big question is whether he can teach the position.
