Tyriq Thompson moves decision timeline from Nov. to "very soon", will attend BBQ

This looks good for Michigan, no?

With the BBQ on Sunday and this tweet backed up by a 247sports piece confirming it....hmm....

Tyriq Thompson will be making his college decision very very soon!!!

For those who didn't already know, his father is Clarence Thompson. He played Safety here from 1993-1996, out of MLK as well. Tyriq's number at MLK is the number his dad wore for the majority of his Michigan career (#17).

I wonder if the coaches know something and this is one of the reasons that Josh McMillon isn't making the trip to Ann Arbor this weekend.   I'm sure Bama is a reason as well but I prefer, were all full at LB now!

Would have to guess he is no more than a year older than CW, It is fun watching a secondary comprised of players that have no apparent weaknesses and we are getting to that point now. When the ball is released you get the feeling something good is going to happen for the Michigan D.  Kind of reminscent of the feeling we had when Todd Collins was passing for us. Everytime he trhrew I expected a completion.  Was somewhat surprised there was a qb ahead of him as to completion percentage.

I'd be careful to get too optimistic on this one. Though he is a legacy, his grandfather (on his dad's side) actually went to MSU. Also Curtis Blackwell is big here as he used to be a coach at MLK. I'd say throughout the process most have regarded Tyriq as an MSU lean.

One interesting note though: Steve Lorenz said on a 247 message board, "Hearing that Thompson knows who he is going to choose, and that he still plans to attend the BBQ"

Not sure what that could mean, but I would take it as a positive. Why attend a recruiting event at a school you know you're not going to?

Trieu, Sam and Steve all seem to be feeling a lot of positive "closing the gap" vibes for UM. This is trending positive, but Sparty supposedly had a pretty big lead according to those same guys. I think its very positive that he'll be BBQing, but just thinking out loud, it's possible that the BBQ visit is an agreement he has with his dad...a just give it one more chance kind of thing. I like the fact that Mom, Dad and GF are all joining Sunday. This one is very interesting.

If you listen to the end of this interview, it sounds like, at least at the Sound Mind, Sound Body camp in June, he had MSU as his top school:

If he does choose Michigan, he will be a great addition to the class. I really do appreciate the guys that perform well in the classroom as well as in athletics and think they're a better fit at Michigan than schools where skipping class is an accepted and approved option.

"I have no idea where Thompson is going. When I first read the "his father is comfortable with him choosing now" I thought that was a good sign for MSU. But then when I found out he was going to the BBQ at Michigan this weekend, that seemed like a good sign for them. So this just seems like a complete toss up right now.

What a team will get with Thompson is a solid all around player. I said it when I reviewed the QB MSU was recruiting that is now committed to Indiana, you can be solid and good at many aspects but not great in any one aspect of the game and be a really good college football player. That's kind of how I see Thompson. You watch his film and it's a lot of good without much standing out. He breaks and reads the football well, but not amazingly. He's a good athlete for his position, but not outstanding. He's a little small, but not really to the point of being much of an issue. I think he'll have to continue to learn the game, be a smart player, and just keep growing to be good at the next level, but I don't think it's a stretch to think he will.

With all that, his ranking seems fairly accurate. I don't really see the pro potential necessarily, though it's not out of the question, but that's why he's probably a high 3-star sort. But I don't doubt he could be a starter in the B1G and make an impact on whatever team he plays on. He's close in size to D. Allen, but I don't think he's as explosive. If you meshed the body type (I think either team will build him similar to Allen was built and use him at the OLB position) with the skill set of someone like former Michigan player Kenny Demens, and that's what to expect I think. Demens was a 3 year starter for Michigan, was a solid but never standout player. Made some really nice plays for Michigan though, was an HM or 2nd team all-conference player, and is now a practice squad and ST player in the NFL after not getting drafted. I see a similar trajectory as that for Thompson where ever he ends up. Eric Gordon may be a more recognizable player trajectory for MSU fans, similar size and build, same kind of ceiling, though from my limited recollection of Gordon, I don't think their playing styles are necessarily similar (I seem to remember Gordon being really strong at the point of attack, but that's before I started watching them as closely as I do now)."

I'm not sure he'll be as good as Demens or not, but that's kind of the trajectory/ceiling I see for him. Good, solid player, but a guy you pretty well know what you're going to get and not a ton more. High floor, only moderate ceiling.

To be honest, I think he's a decent player but someone we probably wouldn't have offered if he wasn't a legacy. After going to a few of his games, he looks more like a Iowa, Minnesota, Northwestern type player.
