TX WR Massington names Michigan his leader?
Another Tremendous recruiting update.
http://thisismichiganfootball.blogspot.com/2012/03/eldridge-massington-…
Personally, I would love to pluck a top-notch recruit out of Mack Brown's backyard, especially one that would fit into the slot of a skill position of need. Interesting tidbit about LSU in the article. Here is to hoping Eldridge makes a visit soon. He and Treadwell together would be down right nasty.

A while back ago, he said that Texas doesn't factor into his recruitmen at all. I don't know if that has changed or not.

I welcome any great players period.
It occupies about as much space across the back as “Manningham.”
Please oh please.
March 30th, 2012 at 10:41 AM ^
Actually it occupies the exact same amount of space.
March 30th, 2012 at 11:22 AM ^
That depends on the font.

Manningham
Massington

EDIT: In the text box, uppercase made them the same width. Not so on the board. Boo.
March 30th, 2012 at 11:31 AM ^
And reminds me of Arrignton
March 30th, 2012 at 12:51 PM ^
And Arrington
I even googled his name to see the correct spelling and still failed.
A lot of the wide receivers that hold offers have pretty sweet names...Eldridge Massington, James Quick, Demorea Stringfellow, Rob Wheelwright
March 30th, 2012 at 10:31 AM ^
Whoaaaa, hold on. There's a guy named Demorea StringFellow?
sounds like it should be two HS football programs in Ohio.
March 30th, 2012 at 12:09 PM ^
Or one high school.
Trotwood Madison
Massilon Washington
Something like that.
Not going to make any comment about what I think of him as a WR because I haven't watched any yet (though his height and weight are nice), but it does seem a bit odd he doesn't really have any Big 12 offers yet. Maybe it's because they think they can swoop in later and pick him up if they miss out on a few guys above him, as it shows interest but no offers from Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma St. It will be interesting how this one unfolds in the near future (especially with an LSU visit coming up).
A big wide receiver out of Texas that eats 8 (!) cheeseburgers... yes please.
He is great at going up and getting the ball. Really high points the ball and is athletic enough to know how to use his body and come down with difficult catches. His speed is probably average. He stays about even with the guys going against him (and not knowing the compitition) that makes it seem like he won't be a burner but is decent with speed.
I biggest worry is about his route running and elussiveness after the catch. He doesn't seem to have good, fluid hips and is a long strider, meaning he doesn't really break in and out of cuts and doesn't make many people miss in the open field. Very raw player. He is a possession WR all the way, and you worry about someone being a possession WR that struggles to break and get seperation on intermediate routes.
But good body, hands, and control make him a dangerous redzone threat and somewhat difficult to cover without a safety over the top on fly routes, fades, and posts. Where Rivals and Scout have him placed (both low 4-star, #24 and #32 WR respectively) seems fairly accurate, as he has some very good ability in the air. At the same time it makes sense why some of the bigger Big 12 schools are showing interest but probably going after some targets higher on their board before extending an offer.

The kid has run a 10.8 100 meters this season and supposedly has a PR of 10.6.
March 30th, 2012 at 11:38 AM ^
I based my reaction off of what I saw on film, not track numbers with pads off running in a purely straight line. He may be a very good track athlete, but what I saw on film was someone who didn't blow by many of the corners he went up against. His track numbers are something to take into consideration, and I didn't know those track numbers, but I think film is more telling than combine/track results, especially what are more than likely hand-timed results. And again, I didn't say his speed was bad, it just isn't great on the football field.
Speed on a football field depends greatly on getting in and out of breaks, blowing by people, and being able to kick into another gear, and I didn't see that too much in his film, which is probably a big reason he is the 24, 24, 32 rated WR by Scout, 247, and Rivals respectively. Those numbers agree pretty well, and seeing as his catching ability is very good, speed and quickness seem to be a reason why he isn't much higher.

Although track times don't always translate to the football field, the bigger the guy is, the more they do, on average. If a guy who is 6'3" 205 can run sub-11 100m times on the regular, it means he has some major leg strength, in addition to quickness. Now, it might mean that he's a long strider who takes a bit of time to get to speed, but those types often look slower than they are on film as well.
Point is, he's a pretty big WR, and he ran a legit 4.5, he's be a unanimous 5-star kid. Still, I doubt he gets caught from behind by anyone.
Apparently, the Scout guy from LSU talked to Eldridge as his visit is upcoming and wrote that Eldridge claimed LSU was his #1 school. I tried getting in contact with the LSU guy to exchange quotes because Eldridge was adamant that LSU was not his #1. I have been in contact with him since December....he's waited for the Michigan offer and now that he has it, really seems to put them on top. Thought it was odd that he'd call a school that hasn't even offered him the favorite, but I'd be interested to know what he told the guy.
Aquaman, where have you been hiding? We were starting to get a bit worried!
There was a lengthy discussion about your whereabouts:

contributions to this board, as mod or poster, are TREMENDOUS.
Hey could anyone tell me why my thread was deleted? Just was curious. thank you!
Good place to start: What was your thread about?
March 30th, 2012 at 10:09 AM ^
The quotes from Tremendous about us being "on top" are not 100% clear. I certainly hope that they are for real because I'd take this kid in a hearbeat. Very Braylonesqe..... on the field.....

Aqua! We have missed you . . . Water Wonderman!
I'd like to see Massington on board, but I'm also wondering why M hasn't landed an elite (i.e., consensus top ten) wide receiver. Treadwell's in the mix, I know, but his commitment's not guaranteed.

What is up with UM recruiting receivers that sound like they're British:
- Edwards, Manningham, Arrington, Breaston, Roundtree, Hemingway and now MASSINGTON. Do you guys have tea and crumpets in the recruit lounge?
March 30th, 2012 at 10:20 AM ^
we lure them in with Turkish Delight.
March 30th, 2012 at 10:22 AM ^
Sir Charles is a fairly popular nickname for a certain CB/WR.
But yes, there are crumpets from what I've heard. Tea, however, is an NCAA violation.
March 30th, 2012 at 10:36 AM ^
Tea alone is not an NCAA violation, it is only when you give the players milk to add to their tea that it becomes an NCAA violation.
March 30th, 2012 at 11:34 AM ^
Apparently that NCAA compliance lecture Gene Smith gave was even more useless than I originally thought. Guy has no idea what's going on.

His recruiting pitch: "I dare say good lads, it would be thrilling to have you be a member of our american-football squad."

A fade route is considered to be 4 steps forthwith and 6 steps yonder.

Sir Percival Edward Gordon-Egerton III is truly a one of a kind coach. He requires all wide receiver to exclaim "For her majesty!" at the beginning of each play.

8 McDoubles instead? That would be a feat of strength that even Gittleson would be amazed by.
March 30th, 2012 at 10:54 AM ^
As a highschool swimmer, I can tell you that 8 McDoubles is infact not a feat of strength. The average on our team for an after practice "snack" is 10-15. My personal record is 17 after swimming the mile. I swear, even if everyone else in the world died, we could keep McDonalds in business.
