Two MORE redshirts burned

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Going through the box score and the participation report, I noticed that we have two more burned redshirts.

Carlo Kemp and Elysee Mbem-Bosse both got into the action.

At this point it's easier to list those who still HAVE their redshirt as 21 of the 26 players that made it to the team from the 2016 class have burned their redshirt.

Those players with RS still remaining are: Ronald Johnson, Quinn Nordin, Brandon Peters, Stephen Spanellis and Kareem Walker.

It is simple logic - the backup QB is ALWAYS the better option - not sure why coaches are always so stupid.

Since Peters is the backup's, backup's, backup he has to be freaking AMAZING. God forbid if he is behind Malzone as well....Fred Jackson's head would straight up explode trying to express his superlatives.

I've been Allen's biggest advocate, but I think his punting duties is messing with the field goal kicking. last yr he was money and boomed field goals. now he'd sputtering them while kicking the ground and missing them. hes off

Ohio State seems to be doing pretty well with freshman players.

We are trying to upgrade our athleticism. If our freshmen are good now, let them play.

We'll get some more next year.

To me, saying a redshirt is "burned" sounds negative. And wasteful.

Harbaugh pays attention to so many details that most of us would get a headache trying to keep up. If freshman are playing, there's a reason. And I'm fine with that.

I find it exciting that 21 freshman are good enough to make an appearance on the big stage. It has to make practice that much better when kids believe they are truly competing for playing time.

WD - I know you didn't coin the phrase. And your post doesn't take a negative position - other than the term "burned". So I'm not taking iissue with the OP.

I don't care about red shirts in most positions. If they help us win now, then play them. Certainly kickers, punters, and quarterbacks are all red "shirtable," so long as there is sufficient depth.

So if I understand the rules, some of the guys that have already played could still get a medical redshirt if they get injured and don't play in any more games. Past this point in the season, playing eliminatesome the possibility of medical redshirt.

I bet at the end of the year the redshirt list will be much bigger than the current list. Peters, Davis, Walker, Eubanks, Spanellis, Kemp, Uche, Gil, EMB, Mettelus, and Nordin all seem likely to end up redshirting. I think they wanted to give a handful of these guys a little taste of college football and that's why they played.

The questionable list would probably include Crawford, N. Johnson, and McKeon. McKeon seems college ready and has a low ceiling so there is little real cost to playing him. Crawford and Johnson are both talented enough but not really needed as of now. With that said next year's possible WR could be elite so they can maybe eat the cost of a 5th year for that minimal benefit of playing them this year.

I don't know. We should create a new burned redshirt watch list now that B10 season has started.

They can't play in more than 30% of the games or any in the second half of the season. The freshmen who have been playing every game aren't likely to redshirt. The ones playing less have several more games. Injuries happen frequently in those circumstances and the NCAA is lenient about them for freshmen.

Expect that some freshmen won't play in a fifth game to keep that possibility open.

I think the redshirts to be are done for the year. I think in any case, come B10 there are fewer opportunities to run them out there ideally. Sure Rutgers and Maryland are terrible but we still aren't going to play 80 players those games. Those games seem more suited to the backups getting more minutes. Next year starter types.
